"All right! All right! Hold on, hold on, I'm coming!" Shouted Leslie
Coulson as she ran, barely covered in her long green silk robe, to the door. "All right! Who the hell is i-Oh." She threw open the door. "Edmund
it's you. I thought you weren't stopping by until later."
"Yeah, I know, look, it's cold out here, can I come in?"
"Oh, yes, sure." Leslie stepped aside, letting Edmund in from the cold.
"Sorry I came early, but I was near here. Am I too early?"
"No, no, I was just about to make some breakfast. Want some?"
"Um..."
"Come on, you look like you haven't eaten anything in days. I've already made the batter for pancakes...yum...pancakes." She began to walk to the
kitchen, leaving Edmund to follow her. "And if you're lucky Mr. Gray, I'll
even make the 'choo-choo' noise while you eat!"
"Thank you, but that's hardly necessary. Nice house." He spoke, wandering around the living room, done in comfortable ivories, creams, and beiges.
The couches were overstuffed and soft, inviting. The walls were lined with
books on every subject but law. The T.V. was littered with movie boxes,
numerous black and white. There was a polished grand baby piano in the
corner, which looked out over the back yard. The piano its self was covered
in pictures.
"I never though you were the family 'type' Leslie." Edmund spoke, walking into the kitchen, carrying a framed picture of a 16 year old Leslie and her
family. "Who are they?"
"They," Leslie spoke as she poured the batter into the sizzling pan. "are my mamma, my daddy, my baby brother Mickey, my baby sister Karen, and that chubby cute baby in the middle is me." pointing to herself with a batter
covered spoon. The batter on the spoon flew off, smacking Edmund square in
the chest.
"Oh Edmund! I am so sorry! Here!" She ran to the kitchen sink, grabbing a clean tea towel, and soaking it in water, then handing it to him. "Oh,
that won't work! Here," She began to unbutton it. "Let me wash it. It
won't take but a second."
"Leslie, it's OK, really!"
"No! Edmund, really, here, keep an eye out on the pancakes and I'll drop this in the wash!" And she took off, Edmund's shirt in hand.
*Ding Dong*
"Hey Edmund, can you get the door?"
"Um..."he looked around for a place to rest his spoon and lowered the heat on the pancakes. "Sure. One sec."
*Ding Dong! Ding Dong! Ding Dong!*
"All right! All right! I'm coming!" Edmund ran to the door and opened it..."Alex?!?"
"Edmund? What are you doing here? Topless?"
"Edmund?" Leslie asked, coming to the door. "Who is is? Oh. Alex. It's you. Please, come in. Excuse the way we look. We're just so rushed this
morning. Let her in Edmund."
Edmund dumbly stood aside and let a very shocked Alex in.
"Was there a reason you dropped by Alex?"
"Um? What? Oh. Oh. Oh, yes. Um...David, David wanted me to - "
"Would you mind terribly if we move this into the kitchen? I fear my pancakes might start to burn." Leslie explained, pushing Edmund into the
kitchen, whispering, "Just go along with me for now."
They entered the sunny kitchen where Leslie offered Alex some breakfast.
"You cook? Personally, I never figured you'd know how."
"Well, Mamma always thought that the two most important skills a woman could possess were cooking and child-bearing hips. Well, I'm in possession
of both of those *and* a brain. But I suppose you didn't come by to hear my
homespun tales. So, why did you come? More syrup Luv?"
"Um, no, no thanks...dear." Edmund stuttered.
"David asked me to drop off some documents." She thrust forward some papers.
"Since when do you do David's leg work Alex?" Leslie muttered as she signed the papers.
"I am not. He simply asked. And if that's it. Then I must be going."
Grabbing the sheets from Leslie's hand, she took off, as quickly as she
came.
"What the hell was that? Are you insane? She's going to think-"
"Exactly what I want her to think."
"What?"
"Let me explain something. My mamma always said that 'That the person you're with on the stroke of midnight is the person you're destined to spend
the rest of the year with.' Well, my mamma picked my daddy one night and
they're still together. This year, I plan on being in David Hayworth's arms
and I *always* get what I want. I pick David and you, deep inside your
hear, pick Alex. Alex, deep inside her heart, picks you. Don't ask how I
know, a woman never divulges her secrets, but I know she does, and I know it
*will* be done. And now, if you'll excuse me...we have to get ready. You're taking me shopping!"
Leslie rose and walked off into her bedroom, leaving Edmund in awe.
"You know, you truly are evil Leslie. But I think that's why I'm beginning to like you."
"Well Edmund, being good isn't always easy. No matter how hard I try."
