Why write well?
If you are writing a shopping list, spelling and grammar are of no consequence.  But any other reason for writing deserves proper consideration or why would you even bother to write at all?  Generally, people write because it is demanded either for their work or for their academic studies. There are some people who write because that is what they do--they write.
Regardless of the reasons, the author's finished work is a direct reflection on him or her.  If the finished product is shoddy, then the writer appears slovenly illiterate; that is not the way to impress people and attain your goals.
