My Disciplinary Method
Kindergartners need lots of chances to make good decisions.  I used to have a stoplight chart but I decided to use another method this year.  I will explain both methods below.
The Stoplight Method

I had a chart that looked like a stoplight (red, yellow and green).  All of the children had a clothespin with their name attached to the chart.  Green=Wonderful day, Yellow=An ok day, Red=Not a good day.  Children were moved to the yellow and red after they continued to do something that was wrong.  Parents received notes consistently about how their child's day was.  The reason that I stopped using this method is because I think that the children need more chances.
The Beehive Method

For the 2001-2002 school year I will have a color-coded beehive.  All of the children will have bees that are placed inside the hive.  The hive is divided into five sections: green (verbal warning), blue (redirection to a different activity), yellow (a few minutes of missed playtime), orange (a note sent home) and red (visit to the office).  When a child does something that is inappropriate they will move their bee to a color.  This will include them in the process of making choices and learning about responsibility.  Bees can be moved back if children improve their behavior.  If a child stays in the beehive all week they will get a sticker and a special treat.
Please keep in mind that everyone has bad days!  We have to remember to reward good behavior with hugs and praise!!  Children know when we are proud of them and need constant reassurance!
I use incentive charts for more individualized attention if a child needs them.
