In the beginning... In the days of the cold war, the late 60s, the American government decided they needed to develop a way of maintaining communications in the event of a nuclear attack. The methods around at the time relied on relay points to send messages. In turn these needed control centres of manage them. It would only have taken one bomb to hit one of these and the whole network would be down. The Advanced Research Projects Agency were sent to resolve the problem. They came up with a computer network that didn't need a control centre therefore totally bomb proof. In the early 90s this network was opened so that the public could access it. The Internet has since become a global communications tool with billions of people using it throughout the world. |
