| Tucek -- Toutcheque | ||||
| I have been in touch with a man named Toucheque in New Mexico who has a most interesting story. In researching what he thought were his family's Cajun Roots he discovered that his ancestor was in fact one Hans-Jacob Tucek -- which somewhere in the past got changed to Jean-Jacques Toutcheque. The French spelling is a phonectic transliteration of the Czech Tucek. He is very pleased to have found out about my project and has already sent me information and he'll be sending me more. Not much is known at the moment, but it appears that Hans-Jacob got here in about 1740, when he settled in the area along the Mississippi River known as the Cote Des Allemands (the German Coast.) This would be the earliest documented arrival of a Czech person to Louisiana -- and this occurred nearly at the very beginning of the settlement of the state. It is a most exciting find. |
