Movie Reviews:
(This is a first look at our most recent reviews. Being Fan Mail! subscribers, you are privileged to get a first hand look at our comments.)
Starring: Jackie Chan, Chris Tucker.
Directed By: Brett Ratner, Adam Greenberg.
Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker? Yes, on the surface, they may seem like an unlikely couple, but if we take a closer look, we find that they are not very different. While Tucker is a well known funny-man in the film industry, Jackie's reputation in Asia is not much different. In fact, that is a characteristic of Jackie's work that he values most (He often compares himself to the likes of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin). Regardless, odd pairing is what draws people to the box office these days and this is certainly not an exception. At this point, you may feel that I've said too much about the actors and nothing about the film itself, well, it was not a coincidence. In fact, the Tucker and Chan pairing is undoubtedbly the only draw about this film. The plot is simplistic and too commonplace for any mention. The acting is mediocre. Although you may not find suspense or thrill in the story line of the film, there is certainly enough comedy on top of action to get people to the theaters. For Jackie Chan, this is his first shot at resubmitting himself to American film production (Note: Rumble in the Bronx, Operation Condor, and Supercop are all Hong Kong Productions). And for Chris Tucker, he takes another step towards stardom. The movie receive 4 go's. There is plenty of entertainment value and Jackie's kicks are more than worth a look.

Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper, William Lee Scott, Chad Lindberg, Laura Dern.
Directed By: Tony Fanning, Joe Johnston, Fred Murphy.
Based on a true story of Homer Hickam, this movie tells a story of four boys from a small mining town finding a way out. While the rest of the film industry focuses on big name stars, this movie actually possesses a story line bigger than its cast. Set in the days of the space program's youth, the news of the Soviet Sputnik stirs a patriotic unity in the dying town. Not yielding to the traditions of pursuing a life in the mines or a football scholarship, Homer and his friends ventures into the field of rocket science. The acting is genuine and the spirit is motivational. This film is a must see for anyone who has a dream. I give the film 5 go's because good stories are hard to find these days.
Other Recommendations: Rudy.

Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Arnold, Tia Carrere, Bill Paxton
Directed By: James Cameron and Russell Carpenter
This movie with the oxymoronic title might have been Arnold's last decent film. It tells the story of an american spy and the manner in which his dangerous and fast-paced becomes intertwined with the dull and monotonous life of his wife (who has a good body and nice skin). It is an entertaining film filled with action and a good amount of comedy. A segment of it was set in some of the Keys in Florida, where Louise and Bob had a chance to visit, thanks to our favorite touring couple Arianna and her driver hubby. You may become a conch after this movie but we can't guarantee anything. But nevertheless, you'll get a good laugh. It receives 4 go's for it's true (no lie) entertainment value.
Note: This is like a prelude to Titanic

Gloria Yip -
She entered the entertainment industry in Hong Kong at a tender age of 15. Still maturing into womanhood, she was forced to face some of the challenging and difficult issues that fell upon her as a young star. She lived through people's scrutiny of her vocal and acting skills and tolerated the countless rumors flying about her and the talented artist Jimmy Lin. Moreover, when she expanded into the industry in Taiwan, she was ridiculed for her mandarin chinese despite the fact that she has an innate ability for learning foreign languages (she speaks cantonese, english, some chinese and japanese). In midst of all these difficulties, she used her tears to express her anger and began learning how to grow as a person. She began designing and managing her own image and presentation. She also began writing lyrics to her own songs and other short novels. She has appeared in numerous highly acclaimed movies such as "Nine Tail Fox and Flying Cat" where she played Little Flirt. In yhe movie, she used her martial arts skills and her expressive acting to make her characer realistic. Some personal tidbits about her include her love for shopping in Japan in the Spring (b/c of the sales there at that time) and her wish for everyone on earth to live happily. She was born on 1/13/73, is the eldest in the family, has blood type O, and likes long skirts, cats, watermelon, and swimming. Her most embarrasing moment was walking into the wrong restroom and the first thing she does when she wakes up is look in the mirror. She left the entertainment industry after her marriage and had two children. Unfortunately, infidelity has plagued her marriage causing her to end it and consider the possibility of re-entering the industry once again. Gloria Yip has always put forth her best effort in her her endeavors. All we can say is, "If we really love her why do hurt her feelings?"
Misc.:
(This section will be reserved for the random and unexpected. We can not predict what may come up in the film industry so we like to give ourselves room to include what may be available.)
In this issue of Fan mail! we are presenting to you the work of one of our favorite stars, Jackie Chan. You may know this man from his works in "The Police Story Trilogy," "Rumble in the Bronx," "Rush Hour," and the most recently released, "Shanghai Noon" (see above). But if that is all you know him from, you have only won half the battle. Released in 1998, I Am Jackie Chan : My Life in Action gives a detailed and complete overview of Jackie Chan's life. It includes all the stuff that you want to know about (major injuries, best films, etc...) and all the other stuff that we really could care less about. But that is the beauty of this book. With the biography in hand, you can be Jackie Chan. You can imitate all his moves from his birth to his present. Personally, I found this book a great read and could not put it down. The book is now available in paperback so it is cheap and you can bring it anywhere, your hand book to being Jackie Chan.
A small note: I personally met Jackie at his book signing in Atlanta when the book was first released. So my copy of I Am Jackie Chan : My Life in Action is signed by Jackie himself.
