Mickey Blue Eyes (1999)

Submitted by: Louise and Bob
Starring: Hugh Grant, James Caan, Jeanne Tripplehorn
Directed by: Kelly Makin
Genre: Romance, Comedy

A romantic comedy, an art selling Englishmen falls in love with the daughter of mobsters. The plot seemed amusing at first, until it just totally got out of hand. Basically, totally unbelieveable and lacks any sort of realism in the movie. Just like "Notting Hill," Hugh falls in love with an atypical girl and struggles to win her heart. Anyway, Hugh's performance was plain and uninnovative. I give this film a thumb down for content, but a mediocre rating as a date movie. Go see it, you come out saying...okay... This gets a go for being kinda stupid.

Okay okay, we admit it, Pea, being a fan of the English accent and fluffy hair, actually went to see this movie ALONE while he was waiting for the radiation in his body to wear off. Whats even funnier, is that Pea saw two construction-worker type men watching this movie together (Now thats something interesting). Now, back to the movie. Grant is an art auctioneer of a NYC firm. The movie begins as he is preparing to propose to his girlfriend (Tripplehorn), who is from an Italian-American crime family (We are very upset by this stereotypical portrayal of hardworking Italians; we now have full-blooded Sicilian in-laws, and we would like to urge the movie industry to stop making Italians look bad!!!). The fact that Grants character is an art seller hurts his vow to not become "one of them." Complications after complications result as Grant is asked to return favors to big boss uncle Vito. The movie is not too deep and not too suspenseful (Of course, it was never meant to be either). BUT, we feel it was worthwhile entertainment as it contained funny scenes capable of producing enjoyable laughter. Best lines: 1) The Le Tratoria, 2) Owner, not waitress, eat f___ing cookie, and 3) DIE DIE DIE piggy DIE DIE. We have to admit most of the fun we derived from this movie was through laughing AT Grant, as he perpetuated his image of "the bumbling Englishman" very well here. One final note, the auction firm owner, the other female employee, and the FBI agents were all pretty weird, we bet they are that way in real life too. This gets 3 Gos.
