Submitted by: Louise and Bob Starring: Roberto Benigni, Nicoletta Braschi Directed by: Roberto Benigni, Tonino Delli Colli Genre: Drama A wonderful work, truly touching and amazing. I consider this film a masterpiece. Plot: The first half of the film indicates a comedy with a few hints of dark clouds over the horizon. This section covers the courting of the main actress and the development of the main character Guido. What follows this is perhaps one of the most tragic events, the Holocaust. But what the director was able to do was to find some glimmer of hope and sweetness and present that to the rest of the world. This movie is definitely a must see. Roberto gives an standing ovation deserving performance. The subtitles preserves the original flavor of the film and allows us to see the movie in its original form. This gets 5 go's because you definitely need to go see this one. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Submitted by: Peas and Carrots This is the first Italian film (Not including the stereotypical Sicilian/Italian-American mobster movies) viewed by us, and we, like the rest of the world, enjoyed every minute of it. For a movie like this, you absolutely have to watch it at least twice, the first time pay the most attention to the subtitles and the plot, and the second (and subsequent) viewing you can then focus on the acting and the filming. Obviously, it is extremely important to watch the original version in Italian, dont even bother with the dubbed crap; we stress this point because the Italian language is so special in its expression of drama and jubilation. In addition, you cannot fully comprehend Benignis wonderful performance without hearing him speak in his own language (DUH). We wont mention too much about the plot, only that it comprises of two main sections: 1) Benigni pursuing his princesse and building his family/home and 2) the family coping with the Holocaust and life in the concentration camp. A few humorous scenes include the nonstop switching of hats, the designed bumping-into-each-other, the fake superintendent scene, and gosh, the kid must be so smart, he speaks Italian so well at such a young age (we are kidding, thats something my grandmother would say)! And to the male audiences who cried, dont be embarrassed, we all did, outwardly and in our hearts. The mostest disappointingest, heartbreakingest moment: when we found out that the German doctor only helped Benigni because he wanted answers to his riddles. For the dubbed version, 3 Gos, for the original version, 5 Gos. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | |
