Submitted by: Peas and Carrots Starring: Meg Ryan, Diane Keaton, Lisa Kudrow, Walter Matthau, Adam Arkin Directed by: Diane Keaton Genre: Drama, Comedy (yeah whatever) Hanging Up is actually based on a novel by Delia Ephron; in fact, the sister of Delia, Nora, is the screenplay writer known for getting Meg Ryan top level work for many years now. As Meg fans, we really try hard to say nice things to promote her films, but this mess, um...I mean, movie, was not something we really enjoyed. The cast members were recognizable enough, with Diane Keaton, Lisa Kudrow, Walter Matthau, and of course the lovable Meg. If you have seen the trailers, you might assume that these four big names are equals in this film...WRONG!!! Keaton and Kudrow do next to nothing except being annoying; HECK, we paid more attention to the GIGANTIC dog than those two. The secret for deciding whether you should rent this or not, is to ask yourself these questions: Do you enjoy talking on the cell phone and HANGING UP the phone? Do you own and love your SUV? Do you like Martha Stewart? And do you enjoy an affluent southern Californian lifestyle? If the answer is yes for the above four questions, go rent it. We answered no, thus it is understandable that we are going to hammer this film in the ratings. We won't bother talking about the plot, since we don't want to re-suffer through its chaotic-ness/heaviness, but we will say that: 1) SUV drivers certainly didn't get an image boost with this movie, 2) if you use the cell phone as much as the three sisters, GET HELP! And 3) what's up with that doctor and his mom? Don't get us wrong, there were meaningful messages to be relayed in Hanging Up, but to quote my bosses (Louise and Bob): A movie is SUPPOSED to be entertaining! 2 Go's, one of them for having Meg Ryan. ![]()
