Martin Blank (John Cusack) is a hit-man. Trained in the CIA, Martin has been a gun for hire for several years. After the years of mercenary sniping, Martin has begun to wonder if it's all worth it. Because of his profession, Martin has no friends, rarely goes out, and is your basic societal recluse. After botching a job he's sent on makeup job to his hometown, Grosse Point. Coincidence coincidence. It's also the weekend of his high school reunion! Let's see hired killer goes back to his small-town high school reunion. Upon returning to his hometown he looks up the one person he regrets not keeping in touch, his senior prom date Debi Newberry (Minnie Driver). The history is he disappeared leaving her dateless on prom night. Every girl's worst nightmare. Okay maybe not every girl's but at least the superficial, hyper-socially conscience and heavily primped ones. They get together for dinner and she pops the question. Why did he ditch her on prom night. Mr. Blank tells her he got scared and joined the army. Not the usual male excuse for bailing on a girl, but hey what can she really say to that? The juxtaposition of a dangerous "hit-man" in his subdued uneventful small-town is very humorous. The movie is riddled with subtle humor. I can't remember any off the top of my head but I remember laughing my pants off. Plus, there's that nostalgia factor of seeing people you went to high-school with. You will love this movie if you like cheesey eighties music and nostalgic memories of high school. You will not like this movie if subtle romantic comedy is not your thing. 4 gos.
