LEA Lesson Plan

I. Purpose:
    Conduct a language experience activity to develop oral and written language skills.
         VA SOL K.1  The student will demonstrate growth in the use of oral language.
         VA SOL K.2 The student will use listening and speaking vocabularies.
         VA SOL K.5 The student will understand how print is organized and read.
         VA SOL K.6  The student will demonstrate an understanding that print makes sense.

II. Objectives:
      A. The student will be able to dictate a story to a teacher-provided stimulus.
      B. The student will be able to point to the words and help the teacher retell the dictated story.
      C. The student will be able to circle the capital letters in the story.
      D. The student will be able to identify the beginning and end of sentences in the dictated story.
      E. The student will illustrate his/her story.

III. Procedure:
      A. Introduction: �Good morning! Today you and I are going to work together to create a short story. I brought a picture for you to look at. [Show picture.] Think about what you see. Can you describe the picture to me? [Student responds.] Does this picture make you think of anything in your own life? Or does it remind you of something you heard about? [Student responds.] Now I want you to tell me a story about what you�re thinking about. I�ll write down exactly what you say, so please don�t go too fast. When we�re done with the story, we can read it together.�

      B. Development
1. Show the student the stimulus.
2. Ask the student to dictate a story related to the stimulus.
3. Write down exactly what the student says as s/he dictates the story.
4. Read the story aloud to the student, modeling positive reading behaviors such as one-to-one word correspondence, finger sweeping, fluency.
5. Ask the student to point to the words and help read them
6. Ask the student to point to the beginning and ending of sentences. Discuss with student how the beginning and ending of sentences are identified in print.
7. Ask the student to circle all the capital letters.
8. Ask the student to illustrate the story.
 
     C. Summary:
�I really liked the story you dictated to me. Could you help me read it one more time so I can hear it and look at the picture at the same time? Can you tell me what you learned from doing this activity? Did you enjoy it? Let me tell you what I learned from it. [Point out some positive attributes of child.] Do you have any questions?�
