What is a Shadow?

Purpose: To familiarize the students with the nature of shadows.

Objective: Students will understand that shadows occur when an object
blocks a source of light.

SOL Science K.7  The student will investigate and understand
that shadows occur when light is blocked by an object.

Procedure:
Introduction:
1. Ask students if they have ever seen a shadow.
2. Ask where they were when they saw the shadow.
3. Ask students to explain where shadows come from.
4. Ask students what shadows look like

Development:
1. Explain the ingredients necessary to make a shadow light and a object that you can not see through.
2. Explain that most objects do not allow light to pass through them; they block light.
3. The shadow is made when light shines past an object, but not through it.
Summary:
1. Using a flashlight as a light source, have students take turns holding up different objects in front of the flashlight to cast shadows on the wall.
2. Point out to the students that shadows resemble the object that makes them.
3. Allow students to experiment with some transparent objects. Let them see that light can pass through them, so they do not cast shadows.
4. If time permits, allow students to tape paper to the wall. Set the flashlight on a table and allow students to put an object in front of it; then trace the shadow cast on the paper.

Resources:
Flashlight(s) or other light source (overhead projector, slide
  projector, etc.)
Tape
Paper
Crayons or markers
Several opaque objects
A few transparent objects (overhead projector film,
magnifying glass, cellophane paper)
Table

Evaluation:
Assessment of Student Learning
1. Observation of students during discussion and exploration time. Do they display an understanding of the nature of shadows?

Teacher Self-Assessment
1. Did the teacher plan a developmentally appropriate activity that promoted understanding shadows?
2. Were the resources prepared and appropriate for the activity?
3. Did the teacher effectively implement the activity?
4. How did the students react during the implementation of the lesson?
5. What is needed for self-improvement or follow-up?
