| Mary Levi TEDU 426 Reading a Book Lesson Plan Small groups (6 students) Grade Level: Kindergarten I. Purpose: Read Teddy Bears Trick �or� Treat aloud to develop literacy skills and for enjoyment. SOL K.2 The students will use listening and speaking vocabularies. SOL K.4 The students will hear, say, and manipulate phonemes. SOL K.5 The students will understand how print is organized and read. II. Objectives: a. The students will listen to a story. b. The students will be able to identify orally which words rhyme. c. The students will be able to hold print materials in the correct position. d. The students will be able to identify the front cover, back cover, and title page of a book. e. The students will be able to follow words from left to right and top to bottom on a printed page. III. Procedure: A. Introduction: �Hello! What holiday is coming up soon? [Halloween!] What do we do on Halloween? [responses] I brought a book to share with you today. It is a very special book about Trick-or-Treating; it is full of surprises!� B. Development: 1. Set book on table and ask children how to hold a book for reading. Demonstrate and describe how for any child that is uncertain. 2. Ask students to identify the front cover and back cover. (There is no title page in this book.) 3. Read the title and names of the author and illustrator, modeling directionality with forefinger. 4. Read text. For each page, continue modeling directionality. Ask students where to begin reading on each page. Ask them where to go after reaching the end of a line. 5. On each page, encourage students to identify the rhymes. As a group, orally segment the rhyming words. 6. Demonstrate how the pull-tabs operate on each page and (if children seem calm and attentive) permit a different child to manipulate the pull-tabs on each page. 7. Follow-up activity: the students will draw a monster of their own invention and write 2 rhyming words. C. Summary: � Did you enjoy that story? What was your favorite part?
