"Where shall I begin? My name is Toth, and I'm the youngest of three children. My oldest brother, Annubi, is from my father's first marriage to his sister, Nephthys. My other older brother, Horus, and me are the sons of Isis, father's second wife, and his other sister. Father, Siris, and his first wife didn't get along very well so they parted company, and she married Set, father's brother. Set and she have a good marriage and are never seen apart. Everyone thinks its a pity that they aren't blessed with children, but as Nephthys always says with a smile, 'If we had children then that would be that much less love for each other.' Life is good. All is well and love in our family is strong. Grand father Geb and his wife Nut keep everything and everyone in line with a strong hand and lots of love. Horus and Annubi are constantly picking on me, but today I finally got them back. A little smoke and a few mirrors work wonders."

"The seasons come and go. I've worked out a system of dykes and levies so that the farmland can be regularly watered, even in times of drought. The ground gives up it's fruit to feed the people that begin to cover the land. Grandfather says that it pleases The One to see the land populated by His creatures. He says that it also grieves The One that these creatures aren't able to live in the garden that He made for them. When I asked grandfather about this his face grew long and he turned away mumbling about consequences of actions. I asked grandmother about that later and all she would say was that there was an act of disobedience causing another shattering. No one seems willing to tell me about the shattering, but I'll find out one way or another."

"The farming has been going very well. It should be quite a bountiful crop this year. Some of us have developed a structure to hold all the grain the crops should yield. Annubi has taken a wife. She's very beautiful, and they are very happy. Father and Mother are also very happy for them."

"A trading caravan came into the area. Grandfather and father made arrangements for the sale of grain. Before the caravan departed the grain sack tally was wrong. It has been my duty and privilege to keep account of the stores in the granary. This sometimes is difficult to do because Horus and Annubi will sometimes move or hide sacks of grain. Once they even hid my accounting tablets. This time the tablets were correct but the actual account was wrong. Father and the caravan master got into a quarrel resulting in a black eye for father, and a broken nose for the merchant. Grandfather called Horus and Annubi from the field to inquire about this since they were in charge of loading the sacks. They left and brought back the missing sacks. All was then well."

"I've been wondering what happened to my brothers for the past six months. It seems that Grandfather had given them over to the caravan master that they had shorted as his personal servants in compensation for their error in judgment. They seem to be changed from this experience."

"A devastating plague has hit hard in the region. It has been killing people and livestock alike. Grandfather Geb and Grandmother Nut have died from the plague, and father lies in bed near death. Mother is sick at heart as she does her best to cure him. Those who have died have blue lips and fingers, while some even have deep purple almost black swellings. The crops may also suffer as a result."

"It has been nearly five months since the plague struck. Life is finally getting back to normal. Father is weak but able to get around with some help. Set has been acting strangely. Father believes the plague may have affected his mind somehow. Set has bouts of anger and depression, but won't tell anyone what it is that afflicts him. Nephthys smiles through it all, but overheard mother say to father that Nephthys has been suffering the temper and beatings from Set. It has father very concerned."

"Tensions between Father and Set are beginning to effect our families and the other families around us. Father has decided that we shall move and let Set has his place separate from ours."

"I am enjoying life in the new region. There is a river much like that back home, so we are able to adapt our farming techniques to this locale. It is good to study the mysteries that The One has placed in the heavens. Father and Mother have told us that when our duties are complete here there is a special place, known as Elysium, beyond those stars where we shall dwell. I look forward with great anticipation and joy for that time."

"Today while aiding my cousin, Hathor, with a calving, she told me that grandfather’s consort of his old age has taken an interest in me. Maat is a few years older than myself, but not so much that she is undesirable. On the contrary, there are few flowers as lovely as she. I am honoured that she would even consider me; she has sent away many suitors since grandfather's death. Maybe I shall be the fortunate one."

"I've discovered an compound indigenous to the region that has a preserving effect by absorbing the moisture from whatever it is spread upon. I presented a bouquet of flowers to Maat thus preserved. She was quite taken with the gift."

"Maat has agreed to be my wife. We wed tomorrow. Set and Nephthys have been invited. I can only hope his temper is better."

"At the wedding feast I thought I saw Horus deep in personal conversation with one of the servant boys. It would be best for him that Father not discover this liaison. He has great plans for Horus, one of which includes children to continue the family. Set was extremely moody, but he was mannerly. Nephthys was very quiet, which is uncharacteristic for her."

"Last night we were awakened by the servants screaming and rushing about. A stable and a granary bin had been set ablaze. During the commotion a figure was seen fleeing in the direction of a sojourner's camp. Father and a number of the male servants went armed to make inquiries of the camp. Women and children mostly inhabited the camp. There were only five men, and two of them were elderly. It was obvious from their condition that Father had awakened them from their slumber when he arrived. Father believes he knows who may have done the dastardly deed."

"Set and Nephthys have moved into our lands. Set is holding a feast in a few days to honour our family reunion."

"The feast this day has ended in tragedy. Knowing of my interest in the art of illusion, Set had a special box constructed. During the feast he had whispered something to father and they had left the tent for a while. When they returned Father smiled at me, and then called everyone outside to the riverside. There was the box. Father climbed into it and Set closed the lid and strapped it securely shut, after which he then shoved it into the river. Mother held her breath as tears welled in her eyes. Set smiled at us and said not to worry; that he'd shown father the secret of the box, but it was to me to figure it out. My mind was frozen as to the workings that would allow someone to make such an escape. The bubbles from the sunken box stopped and far too much time had passed. Horus and I jumped into the water and pulled the box out. We were unable to open the lid. In his frustration Horus rushed Set and began choking him. Annubi finally was able to pry it open but we had been too late. Father was dead, his fingers cut and bleeding. It appeared he had tried to open the bottom of the box. Horus rushed Set again, but Set struck back, blinding Horus. We brought Father home. Annubi is preparing Father for burial using the preserving compound I discovered. Mother is inconsolable."

"Today we buried Father."

"Since Father's death, Maat and myself have moved back home to care for Mother. The other day Nephthys has come to live with us, also. She is in poor health, obviously having suffered great physical abuse. She and Mother are quickly becoming inseparable. It is good for the both of them."

"The west crops were burned during the night and at the edge of the field was a pole with Father's head upon it, and Set's mark upon his forehead. Horus is filled with such rage it is all we can do to contain him. For Set's sake armed servants have been sent after him, led by Annubi. Nephthys told Mother that Set is filled with rage and jealousy, partly stemming from his belief that Annubi should have been his son. An examinations of Father's burial place reveals that the whole of his body has been stolen."

"This coward strikes again like a shadow in the dark. The home of Annubi and his wife and children has been burned to the ground, and them with it; an arm was found attached to a pole. This comes at a time when Maat and I have fallen into our own private grief as we have lost another child. This is the third stillborn. It was a son."

"My heart weeps every time I see Mother. Maat has been refusing to see her, Mother's condition as deteriorated so. She no longer has clarity of mind, speaking night and day with Father's specter. Yesterday her maidservant lost her, she was found down by the river, staring intently upon it. She cannot be left to herself for even a brief moment now. There is an alarm being sounded in the village. I must attend to it."

"The village was set to blaze, two poles plunged into the ground at the gate to the village. A leg was tied to each. Set is truly a demon spawned."

"Maat carries our fourth child. I make prayers daily to The One for this child to live and see my beloved filled with the joy of motherhood. Hathor has bound her to continual bed rest until the child's birth. She has assured us that sometimes even an overactive cow must be confined to birth a healthy calf. We laugh at Hathor's analogy but understand her intentions. So Maat rests, keeping her spirits high."

"I awoke this morning to an arm dangling from the tree next to our tent. Quickly I removed it before Maat woke. She didn't need to see that. I have had enough of this. I am going to Horus and the two of us shall stop Set and his twisted reign of terror."

"As a diversion from the stress at home, Horus and I have traveled to the next village. While there we came across an old pupil of mine. He had been interested in illusion, and having exhibited a gift for it, I taught him what I could. He and Horus seemed to have struck a quick friendship while we were there. On the return home I inquired about this of Horus. To which I was informed that the two of them had been lovers while my pupil was with us. I let the subject drop. There obviously shall be no issue from Horus. I will keep this to myself."

"Horus is not to be found around his tent or the village. There is rumor that he has gone in search of Set himself. No one has any idea where he or Set can be found, so all we can do is wait."

"A full cycle of the moon has passed and Horus has finally returned home with Father's body in possession and triumphantly carrying the head of Set. We are all very pleased he has returned, but I see in his eyes that something has changed within him, only I cannot fully comprehend exactly what it is."

"We reburied Father's remains. Sometime during the ritual, Mother wandered off. All we were able to find of her was her garments by the edge of a lava pit."

"Maat has given birth to our first born; twins. We have named the boy, Ra, and the girl, Ka."

"It was early sunrise and there was an eruption below the earth under the village. All of us rushed outside just in time to witness a ball of flame erupting from the lava pit. It grew and took the shape of a fiery bird. When it came to earth, the shape became that of Mother. She then went to Father's resting place and brought him to life. There has been great rejoicing all the day long and into the night. Father and Mother have not elaborated, but they smile and just say it is part our journey to Elysium."
