Championship has had the distinction of being the anchor leg of what has proved to be sport’s unachievable quest — winning the Masters, the United States Open, the British Open and the P.G.A. in the same season. Trevor Immelman’s victory over Woods at the Masters in April ended the quest early, and Woods’s knee surgery after his United States Open playoff victory for the ages in June has dimmed the Grand Slam prospects in the short term. But the one consolation prize for golf fans is that Oakland Hills still stands ready to meet all comers in this week’s P.G.A. Championship. “The course is spectacular, outstanding,” said Kerry Haigh, the senior director of tournaments for the P.G.A. “It really is in awesome shape, just about exactly as we had hoped.” What does that mean for this week’s contestants, many of whom have been battling one another and the rugged 7,400 yards of long term car insurance Firestone Country Club in the W.G.C.-Bridgestone Invitational that concludes Sunday? Firm fairways, fast undulating greens, primary rough at 3 ½ inches and a few new bunkers added by the architect Rees Jones to put just a little more bite into the course Ben Hogan called the Monster in 1951. Essentially, what lies in wait across Lake Erie in Bloomfield Township, Mich., could prove to be this long term stock market direction year’s most challenging layout, exceeding the difficulty of the United States Open setup at Torrey Pines Golf Course, where Woods and Rocco Mediate tied at one-under-par 283, forcing the 19-hole playoff won by Woods in dramatic fashion. At par 70, stretched out to 7,395 yards, this is a course as bare-knuckle tough as the Motor City itself. “It is a very, very challenging golf course,” Haigh said. “The fairways are contoured, the bunkers are deep in the landing areas, the green complexes are quite challenging and exciting, and have so much movement they can be scary.” The Donald Ross original, drastically revised by Robert Trent Jones Sr. for the 1951 United States Open, and to a lesser degree by Rees Jones, one of his two architect sons, in preparation for the 2004 Ryder Cup and the 2008 P.G.A., does not need much to make it championship ready. Haigh, whose setups origin of term sea-bee have been favorably reviewed by most tour pros through the years, said they had always been geared toward making golfers pay a penalty for errant shots while still leaving room for recovery. “That has been our philosophy — not to get in the way,” he said. “We want to allow the players to show their skills and let them identify who the best player is by making it fair, challenging, while allowing a variety of shots.” That will no doubt come as music to the data quality management term ears of the 156 golfers — a field that includes 96 of the top 100 in the world — who are warily hoping it is not a siren song and wondering if the Monster will again live houston short term care up to its name. “I played Augusta this year for the first time and Torrey Pines and the U.S. Open, but where dose the term boolean originate those don’t even come close to how hard Oakland Hills will play,” said Daniel Chopra, the winner of the 2008 Mercedes-Benz Championship. “I played it last year for the British Open qualifier and, in my mind, it was the toughest golf course I had ever played, and I still believe long term care jobs in ohio that.” Peter Lonard also played Oakland Hills in the British Open qualifier last year. “I thought it was the hardest golf course on earth,” he said, acknowledging that he arrived at the qualifier on a low, feeling burned out by too much golf. “But I’ve matured since then,” he added, laughing. “I think it’ll be very good. I’m looking forward to it. I’m sure the rough is going to be thick, the course is really long, a lot of undulations, cantered fairways. It’s going to be a hard track.” Of particular concern to Chopra are the fairway bunkers, some of them new, all of them deep and penal. “The rough is a nonissue because they’ve got bunkers on both sides of the fairways and they’re deep,” he said. “These bunkers are all designed small so you roll in, you literally just have to trickle into the bunker and get down to the bottom of the flat to have a chance to reach the green.” Direct and succinct as always, Mediate summed it up. “Shooting a good score there is one or two under par,” he said. “It’s just hard. I love that. It’s a difficult driving course, as most majors are, but I love chemical term dictionary that fact. Whether I drive it straighter, I don’t know, but I love that fact. “Par is neat term assurance uae when it matters. You know, you make a par on a hole and you’re not losing a shot to the field, that’s fine. Hogan didn’t call it a Monster for nothing.” True. That is the way it will be this week.
