The following pics and description concern the DeRailers Show at the Roseland Theater, downtown Portland, Oregon. Portland is home to the DeRailers two Telecaster operators.
The DeRailers appeared on stage at exactly 9:55 PM and played till Midnight. The band included a fifth member who played a brand new Emmons Steel Guitar. Each member played through what appeared to be a mint-condition Black-faced Fender Twin Reverb amp. The Bassist used a Red Fender Jazz Bass through Gallen & Kreuger amplification. The bands previous drummer was replaced by a younger gentleman who was no less prepared to deliver the intense driving beat required by the DeRailers.
Brian played his usual silver/gold sparkle late sixties Telecaster which displayed considerable fretboard wear and appeared to have very low string height. Tony played his usual red Telecaster which had an import sticker on the back of the head leading me to believe it is one of the Made In Mexico 1950's models. No pedal boards were on the stage. Brian, however, did use the stock Fender amp Reverb & Vibrato foot-switch.
Because Brian & Tony are originally from Portland, some members of their families were in the crowd. My wife and I stood dead-center at the edge of the stage. Because of this, we did not suffer the PA system blues and got quite an ear-full. The Stage was about waist-high which caused us to spend most of the evening looking up.
The band was on fire and performed an explosive set followed by an extra long and incredibly hot encore. The DeRailers are absolutely one of the tightest bands I've ever seen. Every fast and medium tempo song is filled with dynamics, and every ballad is filled with beautiful steel guitar and soulful singing. Afterward, Brian was available for autographs and handshakes in the lobby.
