| Hamburg, Germany December 6, 1999, Gruenspan: The Mavericks |

| Tonight was the night in Hamburg -- a sort of overwhelming present for Santa Claus' Day when in Germany, the children find little presents in their shoes. People from all over Western Europe came, some from the list: Sabrina from Hamburg, Magda from the Netherlands, and Daisy from Belgium -- all with their hubbies, of course. The concert had only been announced a few days in advance, so the Gruenspan where it took place was actually not sold out, but it was a cosy atmosphere and you could feel that all enjoyed the Mavs a lot. Maybe it was also the cats and dogs it rained all day, plus the fact it was a Monday ... When the Mavs came in, they started playing at full speed from the very beginning. We will put the set list separately. Actually, the set list was what we copied from the sheets that were attached on the stage -- and we are not always sure if they closely kept to it. It really felt as if the boys were enjoying themselves a lot, and the entire concert was a great masterpiece. There were Raul HIMSELF, Nick, Paul, Robert, Jaime, Eric, plus four Havana Horns. RAUL wore a black Italian-style suit, a grey T-shirt, and black shoes. He kept moving and dancing, and seemed to have much fun all the time. There was not so much of a solo bit this time, although it was in the set list. Seems as if they've felt that with such a great orchestral session, fitting in a solo part might have destroyed the festival-like atmosphere. After the very first song (DTNA), they had adjusted the sound machine, so we could hear Raul's voice clearly, and he sounded so fantastic. Sabrina from Hamburg had a very special present for Raul: a sweet little teddy bear made from straw, and she threw a huge bunch of roses onto the stage, so the entire stage was covered with roses. Someone managed to shoot a photo of Jaime and Robert, leaving the stage with a rose in their hands, but we are not sure who it was -- maybe Magda or Daisy? Oh yes, the guy who cared for the lighting system was a most remarkable boy as well: There were blue, red, orange, yellow lamps, but each time when Raul sang the Think of Me line "Think of me when you're blue", he made Raul look as blue as a smurf. We are not sure if this effect was intended, but is was quite funny ... NICK wore a violet shining country suit (looked like a mixture between Italian style and country to us), with black cowboy boots. He only smiled twice during the entire concert, but alas, we did not capture that on photo. He and Robert always got their guitars from the boys from the side who kept tuning them without a noise. ROBERT wore a greyish-silver shining country suit, with black cowboy boots as well, also playing several instruments. What a great gentleman! He was the one who kept smiling the audience all the time, making up for the Nick Kane poker face. PAUL just sat behind his drums, and we do not even remember what he wore, but he seemed to enjoy himself a lot as well -- he played magnificently, with quite a few solos. ERIC kept behind his keyboards all the time, so not much to say except that he contributed marvellously to the great show. JAIME was put sort of in the corner, but those who know him a bit saw immediately that he had great fun ... The HAVANA HORNS, however, will have left an impression that will never be forgotten by anyone. In their golden shirts, they did more than just play the way we are used to see them. Of course, they moved according to the rhythm of the music, but this time, what they did came close to gymnastics. Especially the three younger guys did not only dance, but had great fun: at certain times, the central guy of these three even went down, having the two from the left and right trumpeting and saxophoning at each other over his head. Never seen that before -- sort of a remarkable little show inside the big event. They really are a great addition to what might be called "the rest of the Mavericks" ... After the show, they sort of quickly rushed to their coaches, a few fans waiting for them to come out, equipped with mobile phones, of course. Nick came out for a second, the rest of them disappeared. Lou and I could still see and talk to Robert, Jaime (who remembered seeing us in Cambridge), and Eric when they already sat in their bus. As it was raining all the time, walking to them through the muddy backyard was quite an experience. And they were so nice, entering their autographs into Lou's nice little black autograph album ... Raul and Paul had already headed off for we do not know where. After having directed the German coach driver through the backyard (a muddy and quite complicated place because of a big van standing around), the whole crowd that had waited on the sidewalk waved the coach with the three good-bye ... Of course, the fans still had their after show drink as well -- in a quiet little place on the Grosse Freiheit -- a street where you usually only expect to find red light bars ... Well, that was that ... Andreas and Lou The set list Here comes the set list that we copied from the set list sheets on the stage -- as we enjoyed ourselves during the show, we did not check very much if they kept to it exactly.
