There is quite a bit of good lighting around the George Washington University Virginia Campus on Route 7 just west of Route 28. However, the massive townhome development uses globe or "acorn" fixtures that produce glare, light trespass and light pollution. When driving on Route 7 past this area one is struck by the good commercial lighting and the really bad residential lighting. It is an interesting comparison.
A Word About Globe Lighting.
Globe lights were designed to recreate the nostalgia of the past. They are decorative fixtures and should not be used for street or area lighting.
If decorative fixtures are desired, a better alternative would be to use 15 to 25 watt bulbs simply to illuminate the globe. Full Cut-off street or area lighitng could then be used as the primary source of illumination. Another alternative would be to use full cut-off lantern fixtures that are both attractive AND low glare/trespass/pollution. |
