We live in a material world where we are constantly confronted with new items and are told, "You've got to have this."  Deep down we think, "If only I could drive this car [wear those clothes, have that gadget, live in such-and-such a house--take your pick], then I'd be happy."  We think and act as though material goods will bring us the satisfaction we desire.

Is this the way believers in Christ should live?  What does God say about material possessions?

MATERIAL WEALTH IN THE BIBLE
By scanning the pages of Scripture, we find that many of the people used by God were wealthy (Abraham, David, Job).  The Bible also acknowledges God as the source of wealth. He owns everything (Psalm24:1), he gives wealth (Genesis 26:12-13; Deuteronomy 8:16-18), and he decides who will be rich and poor (1 Samuel 2:7).  However, Paul carefully pointed out that "we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it" (1Timothy 6:7).  So, no matter how many possessions we might accumulate, we can't take them with us when we die.

JESUS AND MATERIALISM
Jesus told his followers to store up treasures in heaven rather than treasures on earth.  His reasoning was clear--worldly wealth is only temporary, while heavenly treasure is eternal (Matthew 6:19-21) and can never be lost.

Jesus understood that what we value in life will determine our direction in life.  When we value earthly things and invest in them, our focus is on the material world.  On the other hand, when we concentrate our time, energy and resources on eternal investments, we are more concerned with the things of God.

As a follower of Christ:
- What possessions matter most to you?
- How would you react if you lost those possessions?
- Are you investing in what can be lost or what will always last?
- "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21).
