Ametrine used to be known only to the nomadic tribes of South America. Because it is not particularly pretty, being contained within rather unattractive, brittle amethsyt quartz crystals, it was not considered very important. Through a freak of nature, it contains sectors of two gemstones, amethyst and citrine, in the same crystal. They were given as tribute to the Queen of Spain during the seventeeth century by conquistador who received the Anahi Mine in Bolivia as a dowry. It has only recently become popular in healing.
