Because St. Valentine wore an amethyst ring engraved with the image of Cupid, it is considered to be the stone of St. Valentine.

Legend tells that Amethyst, a beautiful maiden, attracted the unwelcome attention of Bacchus, the god of wine.  Diana, the virgin goddess of the hunt, saved Amethyst by turning her into gleaming gem, saying hencefore all would behave in a restrained manner in her prensence.

Amtheyst was also the stone the stone of integrity and was worn by Egyptian soldiers in battle so they would not lose courage in dangerous situations.  In the Christian church, amethyst was the gem of purity and is associated with bishops, who wear amethyst rings.  Amethyst is the stone of the Budda and is popular for Buddist prayer beads, especially in Tibet.  In Northern Africia it is a rain making stone and is dropped into water by medicine men and women.

It is a major stone for the Crown chakra as this area deals with ESP.  Amethyst is the birthstone for Februsary.   "The February -born shall find Sincerity, adn peace of mind.  Freedom from passion and from care, if they the Amethyst will wear" Ancient Greeks believed that amethysts could be used in amulets against inebriation.  Hence, the name amethustors, which means not be drunk.

It can help you find freedom from addictive persons/personalities.  It is also suggested for men to use when trying to attract women.  The Greeks wore amethysts for protection against magic, homesickness, evil thougths and drunkeness.  That is why wine was served in amethyst beakers.

This stone can increase psychic awareness; to sharpen the sixth sense.  Many people keep amethysts with their tarot, rune or I-Ching tools as it is considered a very spiritual stone.  If in the shape of a fish it is the sacred symbol of life's fertility.

Place it under your pillow to be receptive to prophetic dreams.  You can use it for protection against psychic attacks; attach to you if you want it to invoke spirits or engrave an amethyst with signs of the moon and sun to neutralize Black Magic.  It assists in the assimilation of new ideas, by carrying, wearing or using amethyst one can remember and apply the myriad of ways which can be used to overcome any crytallized/stationary areas withing ones physcial form, intellectual activities, emotional attitudes and state of consciousness.

It is used in love rituals, healing, compassion, reconcilitaiton, friendship, purification, de-stressing, peace, sleep, dreams adn psychism.  It has been said that this stone will find it's way home if lost or taken.

Amethyst is very good for meditation.  SInce the amethyst colour is the highest vibration of the third eye, an amethyst stone can be placed directly over this area (while the person is lying face up) to usher in a meditative state.  Amethyst's gentle persuasion temporarily stills teh mundane thought processes that usually inundate the consiousness so that the mind can experience tranquility.  Amethyst guides the awareness away from self centered thougtht patterns as it lures the mind towards a deeper understanding.  As the mind surrenders and thoughts suside, glimmers and hints of greater knowledge filter into the consiousness.  Amethyst energy shows the mind how to be humble so that the door to the higher mind can be opened.  The inner calm and peace initiated by this stone enable one to dive deep into the ocean of silence and participate in the serenity that exists beyond constant mental activity.
