his master's voice:

One of the most famous ads ever created shows a fox terrier with his ear cocked to the large horn of an early record player. The ad for "Victor Records" carried the legend: His Master's Voice.  In time, the attentive canine become known as the " the dog everybody knows".

The English painter Francis Barrand was inspired to paint this picture when he saw his dog Nipper listening intently to the voice and music coming from the horn.

The expression "his master's voice" is used ironically to indicate taking instructions rather than speaking for oneself.
