| Lorelei: A siren in "Die Lorelei" (1872), a ballad by the German-Jewish poet Heinrich Heine(1797-1856). The ballad tells the story of a beautiful young woman who sits upon a rock cliff jutting into the Rhine. As she combs her long golden hair with a golden comb,she sings a song with a haunting melody. The glinting gold and the ethereal melody sung by the beautiful maiden lure unwary sailors to their death upon the rocks. A Lorelei is a seductress, a siren. |
