Jane Eyre is an example of Gothic elements turned into great literature.

In the novel, Jane, an orphan, takes a job as governess at isolated Thornfield Hall. Her charge is the illegitimate daughter of the saturine master of the house, Mr.Rochester.

From the attic comes piercing screams and the occasional appearance of a dishevelled, crazy woman .

Rochester falls in love with Jane and asks her to marry him. When Jane discovers that the woman in the attic is really Rochester's mad Creole wife, she flees.

Mrs. Rochester serts fire to the house and dies in it, while Rochester is blinded trying to save her.

Jane returns to care for Rochester. The famous final sentence of the book is, "Reader, I married him".
