Halley's Comet:

Comet named after the English astronomer, Edmund Halley (1656-1742), who concluded that the comets sighted in 1531,1607 and 1682 all followed the same orbit around the sun and were indeed one and the same comet.  He predicted the comet would reappear in 1758, and was proven correct.  The comet takes about 76 years to complete it's run. It's most recent appearances have been in 1910 and 1986.

Halley's comet has come to stand for a highly dramatic appearance.
