One of the first tasks of the Neophyte is to make the magical objects that represent the four elements-Fire, Air, Water, and Earth. These objects are often called the elemental weapons, but some prefer to use the less bellicose term Implements, because they are used to implement the magical will. They are the chief tools of the Mage.
*Wand*
The Wand is the Implement of Air, the realm of the rational mind and inspiration, and corresponds to the East. It comes under the Lordship of the Archangel Raphael.
*Dagger*
The Dagger (called athame in the Wiccan tradition) is the Implement of Fire and correspons to the South, which the Archangel Michael protects. The qualities of Fire are active, masculine, and generative. The dagger represents strength, energy, courage, and will, and with it you can command the Salamanders- the Spirits of Fire- to implement your will. Like fire, the dagger is dangerous- it is the only elemental tool that is also a weapon. If you are unable to forge your own dagger, you may buy one, but be sure that is has not been used for magical purposes before. Unlike a knife, it should be equal sided and double-edged. You will know your dagger when you find it- it will feel right in your hand.
*Cup*
The Cup used in magic is like a Chalice or Grail. It represents the soul, the element of water, and the West, whose guardian is the Archangel Gabriel. Water is the primary passive element, just as fire is the primary active element. It has a magnetic, attracting quality to it; like a cup, it receives and holds. It is Psychic and Intuitive and represents the Archtypal Feminine Principle. It is traditionally made of silver or glass. Rather than buying a cup, it is best to received it as a gift from someone who loves you unconditionally, like a parent or sibling.
*Pantacle*
The Pantacle usually has a Pentagram on one side. As a result, it is often misnamed Pentacle, a synonym for Pentangle or Pentagram. Pentalce means Five Angles, being a five-pointed-star. The pantacle, however, means All Angles, being a disk shaped like a solid wheel. The pentacle is the magical implement of the Element Earth. It represents the Body, the most Material Factor of life, and corresponds to the North, which the Archangel Uriel defends.
