The ELEMENTS represent the FORCES of NATURE that make up the MATERIAL WORLD of the COSMOS. These elements- called FIRE, AIR, WATER, and EARTH- are not the COMMON SUBSTANCES with which they SHARE THEIR NAMES. Ther are PRINCIPLES, and these principles are paired with FOUR QUALITIES- HOT, COLD, DRY, and MOIST.
FIRE:
Fire is hot and dry. It is symbolized by an upward-pointing triangle, being volatile and ascending.
AIR:
Air is hot and moist. Its triangle is croseed, putting a brake on the ascending nature of fire.
WATER:
Water is cold and moist. As the descending element, its sign is a downward-pointing triangle.
EARTH:
Earth is cold and dry. It halts the fall of water, so its triangle is crossed.
Each element shares one of its qualities with another element. This provides the dynamic that allows for transformation within matter. Earthy solids can melt into watery liquids. which in turn can become gases, and then condense back into fluid or burn. Fire is the most voltile of the elements; earth, the most fixed. Fire and air are the masculine elements, earth and water feminine. All things are mixtures of the four elemental qualities.
