| Some of my favorite female deities: Ana(i)t/Qadesh (Holy One)/Anatu/Anahita- Warrior Goddess; Mistress of the Lofty Heavens; Controller of Royality; Virgin (meaning independent); Progenitor of People; Mother of all Nations; Sovereign of all Deities; Strength of Life; She who kills and resurrects; consort of Ba'al. She carried an ankh and wore horns and a Moon disk. She was linked with the lion, wore coriander scent and purple makeup for battle. Her power was so great to curse and kill that even the greatest of gods were afraid of her; whatever she wanted was granted. Revenge, conflict, fearlessness, vegetation, dew, dogs, overcoming obstacles. Artemis- Virgin Huntress; goddess of wild places and wild things; the Huntress; Maiden; Bear Goddess; Moon Goddess; Hunter of Souls; Shape-shifter. Patroness of singers; protector of young girls; mistress of magic, sorcery, enchantment, psychic power, women's fertility, purification, sports, exercise, good weather for travlers, countryside, woodland medicines, juniper, healing. Astarte- Lady of the Mountain; Queen of Heaven; Lady of Byblos; Mistress of horses and chariots; Maiden; Virgin; Mother Goddess. The fierce consort and sister of Ba'al of Canaan in her aspect as the goddess Anat. In her war aspect, she wore the horns of a bull. Her priestesses were famous astologers. Revenge, victory, war, crescent Moon, astology, sexual activities. Bast/Bastet/Pasht (In her dark aspect)- Cat-headed Goddess; mother of all cats; wife of Ptah. She was identified with Artemis or Diana who was also called the mother of cats. The living power and the gentle heat of the sunlight. Lady of the East; associated with the god Sept (Lord of the East). The cat was Egypt's most sacred animal but the black cat was especially sacred to her; Egyptian physicians used the black cat symbol in healing. Cats were sacred to her in general, kept in her temple, and embalmed when they died. To kill a cat meant a death sentence. Bast carried a sistrum in her right hand and a basket in her left. She was generally draped in green. Goddess of fire, the Moon, childbirth, fertility, pleasure, benevolence, joy, jokes, sexual rites, music, dance, protection against disease and evil spirits, warmth, all animals (especially cats), intuition, healing, generosity, and marriage. Charities/Graces- Traid of Moon Goddesses. Usually portrayed nude and dancing. They were Aglaia (the shining one, glorious), Thalia (the flowering one, abundance), and Euphrosyne (the one who makes glad, joy). Circe- "She-falcon"; Moon Goddess. Called the death-bird. Creiddylad/Creudylad/Cordella- Daughter of the Sea God Llyr. Connected with Beltane and often called the May Queen. Goddess of the summer flowers. Love and flowers. Ereshkigal- Queen of the Underworld; the Crone aspect of the Goddess. Dark magic, revenge, the waning Moon, death, destruction, regeneration. Freyja/Freya- "Lady"; Great Goddess; "She who shines over the sea"; sister of Freyr and daughter of Njord; Vanir Goddess. She was married to the God Od who mysteriously disappeared. She is the mistress of Cats, leader of the Valkyries, a shape-shifter, the sage or "sayer" who inspires all sacred poetry. Thirteen is her number and Friday her day. Love, beauty, animals, sex, cats, childbirth, fire, horses, enchantments, witchcraft, gold, wealth, trance, jewelry, wisdom, foresight, magic, luck, fertility, the Moon, the sea, death, music, flowers, poetry, writing, protection. Gaea/Gaia- "Borad-bosomed"; Great Mother; Universal Mother; Supreme Goddess; Earth Goddess; Mother Earth; Primeval Prophetess; most ancient Earth; omnipotent. She was the greatest of oracles. Sacred oaths were made in her name. She was the goddess of motherhood, agriculture, fertility, marriage, dreams, trance, divination, oracles, healing. Great Mother- The Lady; female principle of creation. Goddess of fertility, the Moon, Summer, flowers, love, healing, the seas, water. The 'mother' finger was considered the index finger. The most magical which guided, beckoned, blessed, and cursed. Gulliveig- Vanir Goddess and sorceress; "Golden Branch"; Mistress of Magic; seerers. prophecy, healing. Hathor/Athor/Athyr/Het-Hert (House of the Womb Above)- "The Golden"; "Queen of the West" (or the dead); "the lady of the Sycamore"; "House of the Face"; "House of Horus"; Mother Goddess; mother of all gods and goddesses; Queen of Heaven, Sky and Moon Goddess similar to Aphrodite. Considered self-produced. The Seven Hathors, or Holy Midwives, were associated with the seven planets. Cosmic goddess associated with RA; she carried his Sacred Eye. Personification of the great power of Nature. The mirror and sistrum were sacred to her. Hathor's appearance could be cow-headed goddess or human-headed women with horns, cow ears, and heavy tresses. She liked to embody herself in the sistrum to drive away all evil spirits. New Year's Day, one of her many festivals, was celebrated on her birthday. She cared for the dead, carrying them to the afterworld. Protectress of women; goddess of joy, love, pleasure, flowers, the sky, Moon, tombs, motherhood, beauty, marriage, cosmetics, singers and dancers, merry-makers, beautiful women, artists, artistic works, vine and wine, ale and beer, happiness, music, song, the dance, weaving garlands, good times in general, Nature, physical comforts, protection, astrology, prosperity, jewelry, strength, the arts, family. Hecate- "Most Lovely One"; "the Distant One"; Thracian goddess of the Moon, the dark hours, and the Underworld; the Crone, Queen of the world of spirits; goddess of witchcraft; snake goddess; Great Mother; Great Goddess of Nature; Lady of the Wild Hunt. Daughter of Tartaros and Night, two Titans; other versions says of Perses and Asteria (Starry-Night), or of Zeus and Hera. Another goddess of the Amazons, her chariot was pulled by dragons. She could change forms or ages and rejuvinate or kill. She was the third Moon aspect as the Had (Dark Moon) or the Crone (revered as the Carrier of Wisdom). A huntress goddess who knew her way in the realm of spirits; all secret powes of Nature at her command; control over birth, life, and death. She was Patroness of priestesses; goddess of witches, the waning Moon, dark magic, prophecy, charms and spells, vengeance, expiations, averting evil, enchantments, riches, victory, wisdom, transformation, reincarnation, incantations, dogs, purification, prosperity, destruction, limit, ends, choices, crossroads, annihilation, curses, sky, Earth fertility, wealth, magical charms, hauntings, revenge. Hel/Hela- Queen of the Dead and Ruler of Niflheim; her home is called Sleet-Den or Sleetclod. Dark magic, revenge. Heqet/Heqtit/Heket- As a frog-headed goddess, she was one of the midwives for the birth of the Sun each morning and for the germinating grain. Goddess of creation, childbirth, fertility, corn, resurrection. Inanna/Ninanna- Mistress of Heaven; the Morning and Evening Star; War Goddess; Sovereign Lady of the Land; Queen of the Assembly of deities. The most important Sumerian goddess, she was represented riding on her sacred lion, sometimes with a pack of hunting dogs. Other times she was pictured as a winged goddess of war, armed with bow and quiver. One of her symbols was a gatepost hung with streamer; another, a serpent coiling round a staff; her planet was Venus. War, defence, victory, love, fertility, light, destiny, peace, prosperity, crops, sexual love, civilization, agriculture, justice, weaving and pottery, laws.
