The following components provide a platform, from which developers can quickly create collaborative business web applications.

Security

Domino's security model is built in. Authentication against the Domino Directory can also be achieved through the web, allowing users to access their e-mail and business applications with the same user id and password.

E-mail Notification / Workflow:
Every Domino server is capable of sending and receiving e-mail. This environment allows applications to leverage e-mail notification and in fact document forwarding and submission. Electronic forms can be filled out on-line and routed to the appropriate individual's mail boxes for them to take action

Interoperability

Lotus Notes Domino provides several options for interfacing with the rest of your infrastructure. The SMTP mail protocol is standard across the Internet and is native to the Domino server. This allows the Domino server to send to and receive e-mail from other servers in your environment.

Domino servers support connections to LDAP (Light Weight Directory Access Protocol) directories, allowing users to find information about people, such as phone numbers and e-mail addresses, outside their organizations. Client workstation can also access data stored in Lotus Notes databases directly from Microsoft Office products like Word, Excel, and Acess via COM (Component Object Model.)

The Domino Network File Store (DNFS,) included in version 5.0.5 of the Domino server, allows users to access a Domino file server like any other file server through Windows Explorer or any Windows application Open/Save dialog box. This provides users with a secure, replicatable, indexed, and collaborative repository for their documents.

Full Text Searching

Databases stored in Lotus Notes / Domino format support full text indexing of not only content stored in text format, like e-mail messages, but also binary files such as Microsoft Word attachments. There are several full text index options, which increase the accuracy of user searches.

Java

Lotus Domino servers ship with an integrated Java VM (virtual machine.) This allows the Domino server to run Java agents (programs) on the server with no special configuration

CORBA

IIOP can be enabled on the Domino server to allow it to serve Java application code to clients that request it.
