THIRLMERE LAKES
From Sydney take the M5 Motorway to Picton, which is about 90km (follow the signs). When you reach Picton take the time for a coffee and walk around. It is an interesting town. Call in at the Visitor Information Centre in the old Post Office it has lots of brochures and maps on hikes and places to visit in the area. When you come to the main street of Piction, Argyle Street, turn left then continue to Thirlmere Way which is on your right, right into Oaks Street where you cross the train line - TAKE CARE HERE AS THERE ARE NO GATES - then left into Slades Road. I found this way a lovely picturesque drive through farming country. The National Parks brochure says to take the Hume Highway south from Piction, turn right at the sign to Thirlmere Village, cross the railway line, turn left and proceed south on Buxton Road, turn right onto slades road, 2km south of Thirlmere or at Couridjah Siding 4km south of Thirlmere. I drove home this way. Take care on the gravel roads after and during rain. If you have any problems just follow TOURIST DRIVE 12.
From the first car park follow the road to the second car park and follow the track beside the picnic tables keeping to the right. As you come around the lake you will see a little track leading off to your left - keep walking until you come to the fork - take the right fork ( the left leads to the road) you can continue walking through a lovely gum forest to Lake Nerrigorang. The trail comes to an end at private property. This walk is approximately half an hour from the lake depending on how much looking an photograph taking you do. Return to Lake Couridjah rembering to keep left at the fork. When you get back to the main track turn left - this trail encircles Lake Couridjah so you end up where you started. The compleste circuit is approximately one and a half hour. The walk is beautiful with many different plant and tree species,Paperbark, Rough-barked apple, River Peppermint, Yellow Bloodwood, Drooping Red Gum and Bottlebrush, there are ferny areas and a lovely grassy area with arcacia trees, daisies and lots of wombat holes - continue until you come to the road - turn right and continue to gate - turn right - this road will lead you back to the car parks. It is an easy walk.
