katie- what is a hobbit?

elysa- look around they’re hobbits, short people, and we’re one of them…..that’s what they think we are, but we’re not.

katie- ooh!

tom- yes you are, hobbits

elysa- i have a question, where do we live?

tom- i’ll take you to your homes

[the four “hobbits” follow tom]

[other hobbits stare at them]

maryann- what the hell are they staring at?

sharon- i dunno.

[katie and elysa are behind]

elysa- hey i know why they’re staring it’s because look at what we’re wearing, it’s freakin’ way different then their style.

[maryann heard elysa]

maryann- you’re right…cool, we’re different.

[tom stops]

tom- merry and pippin theirs your homes…that would be you and you [pointing at elysa and katie]

bilbo- where have you been? just go and wait for him.

sharon- i’ll go, now!

[sharon leaves]

[sharon is waiting]

[gandalf singing]

sharon- you’re late!

gandalf- a wizard is never late, sharon, nor is he early. he arrives precisely when he means to.

sharon- you know my real my name?

gandalf- of course i do, i’m a wizard. why won’t jump you in and i’ll give you a ride?

[sharon jumps in the cart]

[they go inside]

[they start talking]

bilbo- i need a holiday, a very long holiday.

gandalf- let’s go outside for a little fresh air.

[they go outside]

[gandalf and bilbo smoke some weed]

bilbo- this will be a night to remember.

SCENE 3

sharon- dude, i’m bored.

[katie and elysa walk up behind sharon]

katie- yeah, me too.

elysa-this is totally dullsville.

sharon- no shit!

[maryann pops out of nowhere]

sharon- geez chick, don’t scare me like that.

katie- well you have to admit it, it was quite funny.

elysa- yeah i have to agree with katie on this, it was funny.

sharon- shut up!... anyways, you know what they could do, is play better music.

maryann- i know, huh? i have an idea.

sharon- are you thinking what i’m thinking?

maryann- yup!...did you bring your cd player?

sharon- yup!...did you bring your speakers?

maryann- of course i did...

sharon- then let’s get this party started!

[sharon does her “technology” work]

[the music is blasted over the speakers]

[maryann and sharon dance]

[then the other hobbits join them]

[katie and elysa are just standing and watching them dance]

katie- [yelling at maryann and sharon] hey guys!

[sharon and maryann walk towards katie]

katie- we have this idea.

sharon- what is it now?...no wait!...don’t tell me i don’t want to know.

katie- ok then, elysa and i will do it by ourselves.

[katie and elysa walk away from sharon and mary ann]

maryann- don’t get caught?!

[maryann turns around to sharon]

maryann- dude, they’re gunna get caught.

sharon- no shit! [laughs]

[they sit down]

[maryann keeps staring at a guy]

sharon- who are you staring at?

maryann- nothing.

sharon- sure looks like nothing.

maryann- ok, ok, that dude right there looks kind of cute.

sharon- to you, everybody looks cute.

maryann- not everybody.

sharon- sure?...why notcha go and dance with him?

maryann- i don’t dance good.

sharon- so...

maryann- you know what, i’ll just get me some beer.

[maryann gets up and leaves]

[sharon stops her, and pushes mary ann towards the dancing crowd]

[maryann and that dude dance together]

SCENE 4

[bilbo’s ear twitches]

[sharon walks around]

[bilbo grabs her, and they hide]

bilbo- sackville-bagginses.

sharon- huh?

bilbo- they are still mad at me about staying in the house too long.

sharon- oh.

[the sackville-bagginses try to find bilbo and sharon]

[the sackville-bagginses leave]

SCENE 5

[elysa grabs an apple]

[katie jumps in the cart]

[katie grabs a firework]

katie- how ‘bout this one?

elysa- no! the big one.

[katie grabs a bigger one]

elysa- wow! i like that one...it looks like a dragon’s tail.

katie- i know.

[they grab the firework and enter a tent]

[they set it up, katie lights it]

katie- done!

elysa- you’re suppose to stick it in the ground.

katie- it is in the ground.

elysa- outside!

katie- this was your idea.

[the firework blows up]

[katie screams]

[the firework scares everybody cuz it was a shape of smaug, the dragon]

[katie and elysa get up]

[gandalf grab their ears]

gandalf- elysa and katie, tsk tsk tsk. on your first day here you’re already in trouble.....clean the dishes.

katie- huh?!

elysa- why?

gandalf- cuz i said so.

katie and elysa- damn!

elysa- but ok.

[elysa and katie wash the dishes]

[hobbits cheering for bilbo to make a speech]

[bilbo takes the stand makes his speech]

[while saying his speech he takes the ring out of his pocket, holds it behind him]

bilbo- i bid you all a fond farewell.

[bilbo puts the ring on and disappears]

sharon- what the hell just happened?

maryann- i dunno.

sharon – oh well...i’m having fun at this party...so yea

[the hobbits party the night away]

SCENE 9

[invisible bilbo walking to the house]

[he enters the house]

[he takes off the ring]

[he walks towards the fireplace]

gandalf- there are many magic rings in this world, bilbo baggins...

bilbo- oh come on, gandalf! did you see their faces?

gandalf-...and none of them should be taken lightly.

[bilbo turns around]

bilbo- it’s in a envelope... over there on the mantelpiece.

[gandalf looks for the ring on the mantelpiece]

bilbo- no wait! it’s here...in my pocket.

[bilbo takes the ring out of his pocket]

bilbo- it’s my own....my precious.

gandalf- precious? i think you have kept that ring long enough.

bilbo- how would you know? you want it for yourself.

gandalf- [angry] bilbo baggins! do not take me for some conjurer of cheap tricks! i’m not trying to rob you, [calms down] i’m trying to help you.

[bilbo and gandalf hug]

bilbo- you’re right the ring must go to frodina.

[bilbo opens the door]

gandalf- bilbo, the ring is still in your pocket.

[bilbo reaches in his pocket, and takes out the ring]

[he slightly drops the ring]

[gandalf walks bilbo to the door]

[they say their goodbyes]

[bilbo leaves]

[gandalf goes back inside the house]

[gandalf reaches out for the ring]

[then “boom”, the eye of sauron appears]

SCENE 10

sharon- you know what? i’m going home. i’m gunna go see what’s my uncle up to. c-ya guys!

maryann- ok chick, bye!

[sharon leaves]

sharon- [thinking] wow! is this really the book that we’re in? weird....but oh well.

[sharon opens the door]

[she sees gandalf sitting there]

[she picks up the ring]

sharon- so....um....where’s my uncle bilbo at?

gandalf- he has gone to stay with the elves.

sharon- oh.

[gandalf turns around to look at sharon]

[gandalf looks at her hand]

gandalf- bilbo’s ring.

[gandalf takes an envelope and puts it towards sharon]

[sharon puts the ring inside the envelope]

[gandalf seals it]

gandalf- i’ll be back.

sharon- what? but why?

[gandalf walking towards the door]

gandalf- i don’t know, sharon. [turns around to face sharon]..keep it secret, keep it safe.

[gandalf leaves]

SCENE 11

[gandalf meets up with strider looking for gollum/smeagol]

gollumshire!!! baggins!!!

[gates of minas morgul opens]

[the ringwraiths ride out to find the ring]

[gandalf rides to the outskirts of mount doom to observe the activity that’s  going on.]

[he then heads to minas tirith to study its ancient scrolls]

gandalf- [image of isildur’s past] year 3434 of the second age. here follows the account of isildur, high king of gondor and the finding of the ring of power. it has come to me, the one ring. it shall be an heirloom of my kingdom. all that should follow in my bloodline shall be bound to its fate for i will risk no hurt to the ring. it is precious to me, though i buy it with a great pain. the markings upon the band begin to fade. the writing, which at first was as clear as red flame, has all but disappeared. a secret now that only fire can tell.

[gandalf looks startled]

SCENE 12

[ringwraiths are close]

[music playing at the green dragon inn]

katie, elysa, and sharon- [drunk, singing] to heal my heart and drown my woe. rain may fall and wind may blow. but there still be…many miles to go. sweet is the sound of the pouring rain. and the stream that falls from hill to plain. better than rain or rippling brook.

katie- [drunk and singing] there’s a mug of beer inside this Took.

[mary ann sitting down staring at the hobbit dude]

[everybody starts to leave]

[mary ann walks sharon home]

sharon- bye chick! love you!

maryann- [drunk walk] love you too chick!

[sharon goes inside the house]

[window is open, and wind is blowing]

sharon- what the fuck?!

[she walks further]

[a hand comes out from the dark]

[sharon jumps]

gandalf- is it secret, is it safe?

[sharon opens her chest of stuff]

[she looks for the ring]

[she finds the ring]

[she hands it to gandalf]

[gandalf snatches the ring]

[gandalf tosses it in the burning fire]

[the envelope burns off]

[gandalf takes the picker and takes the ring out]

gandalf- put out your hand, it’s quite cool.

[sharon puts her hands out]

[gandalf puts the ring in her hands]

gandalf- is there anything on it?

sharon- nope, i don’t see anything...nothing

[gandalf feels relieved]

sharon- no...wait! there’s something showing. it looks some kind of writing. i have no idea what it says.

gandalf- there are few who can. the language is that of mordor, which i will not utter here.

sharon- ok?...what’s a mordor?

gandalf- it’s not a what, it’s a where?

sharon- oh!!!!

gandalfin the common tongue it says, "one ring to rule them all, one ring to find them. one ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them."

[they head to the kitchen]

[sharon pours some tea]

gandalf- this is the one ring. forged by the dark lord sauron in the fires of mount doom. taken by isildur from the hand of sauron himself.

sharon- then why is it here?

gandalf- well bilbo took the ring from gollum.

sharon- what’s a gollum?

gandalf- gollum was a hobbit, but was corrupted by the ring.

sharon- oh!

gandalf- for sixty years the ring lay quiet in bilbo's keeping, prolonging his life, delaying old age. but no longer sharon. evil is stirring in mordor. the ring has awoken. it's heard its master's call.

sharon- but who is this sauron guy? wasn’t he like destroyed or something?

gandalf- no, sharon. the spirit of sauron endured. his life force is bound to the ring and the ring survived. sauron has returned. his orcs have multiplied. his fortress of barad-dur is rebuilt in the land of mordor. sauron needs only this ring to cover all the lands of a second darkness. he is seeking it. seeking it, all his thought is bent on it. the ring yearns above all else to return to the hand of its master. they are one, the ring and the dark lord. sharon, he must never find it.

[sharon walks to the fireplace]

sharon- we have to keep this ring hidden no matter what. but...umm... does anyone know that it’s here? huh, do they gandalf?

gandalf- there is one other who knew that bilbo had the ring. i looked for the creature gollum, but the enemy found him first. i really don’t know how long they tortured gollum, from the screams and the insane babble, they only discerned two words.

gollum-[flash back to gollum] shire!! baggins!!

sharon- shire!..ok only one good thing i don’t have the last name of baggins.

gandalf- sharon, yes you do!

sharon- shit!! but that means...that would lead them here.

[nazgul whacking a hobbit’s head off]

sharon- gandalf, take it!

gandalf- [backing away]  you can’t offer me this ring.

sharon- please gandalf!

gandalf- i can’t, it would wield a power to great and terrible to imagine.

sharon- but it can’t stay here!

gandalf- no! no it can’t

sharon – ok, then, what should i do?

[sharon gets packed]

gandalf- you must leave quickly.

sharon – ok, where do i go?

gandalf- get out of the shire, make for the village of bree.

sharon- umm...bree? where’s that?

gandalf- take the buckleberry ferry.

sharon- ok, what about you?

gandalf- i’ll be waiting there at the inn of the prancing pony.

sharon- ok!

[gandalf hears rustling in the leaves]

gandalf- get down!

[sharon drops to the floor]

[gandalf goes to the window,]

[peers out cautiously then gives the bushes a whack with his staff]

maryann- ow! that hurt!

[gandalf grabs maryann and plops her on the table]

gandalf- have you been eavesdropping?

maryann- ummm...no?

[sharon gets up from the floor]

sharon- damn chick! you know that you were eavesdropping.

maryann- i know. [scared] don’t turn me into anything unnatural.

gandalf- no?

[maryann gets her stuff]

[they start their journey]

[gandalf stops the hobbits]

gandalf- i’ll be leaving now. the buckleberry ferry is that way. [pointing straight ahead]

sharon – ok.

gandalf- is it safe?

[sharon puts her hand close to her pocket]

[gandalf jumps on his horse]

gandalf- i’ll be seeing head of my order. he is very wise, and he’ll know what to do.

[gandalf rides off]

[sharon and maryann walk more]

[mary ann stops]

maryann-  are you sure about this?

sharon- yes, i am, because it’s for the greater good.

maryann- are you sure?

sharon- yes, let’s go, this would be fun. trust me.

maryann- ok..

[they walk more]

[they stop to eat and rest]

[maryann is cooking]

[sharon just being lazy]

[soft singing in the distance]

sharon- what is that?

maryann- i dunno.

sharon- let’s go check.

[maryann and sharon check it out]

maryann- wow, that’s pretty.

sharon- heck yea it is.

maryann- they’re elves, but tall ones.

sharon- yea, huh?

maryann- this is tight ass.

sharon- it looks like they’re all leaving.

maryann- aww...

sharon- hey let’s go , we need to get some shut-eye for tomorrow.

[they walk to their stuff]

[sharon sleeps, but maryann cannot]

maryann- sha, how do you do it?

sharon- do what?

maryann- sleep like this.

sharon- imagining it’s my bed, try to do the same.

maryann- alright... [sleeps]

SCENE 13

[ringwraith, on a ridge, looking over the shire]

[gandalf rides swiftly into isengard]

[saruman descends down the steps of orthanc to meet him]

saruman- smoke rises from the mountain of doom. the hour grows late and gandalf the grey rides to isengard seeking my counsel. for that is why you have come, is it not...my old friend?

gandalf- saruman. [bows]

[gandalf and saruman are walking through the gardens of isengard]

sarumanyou are sure of this?

gandalfbeyond any doubt.

sarumanthe ring of power has been found.

gandalfall these long years it was in the shire, under my very nose.

sarumanyet you did not have the wit to see it. your love of the halfling’s leaf has clearly slowed your mind.

gandalfbut we still have time. time enough to counter sauron if we act quickly.

sarumantime?! what time do you think we have?

[gandalf and saruman are conferring in the chambers of orthanc]

sarumansauron has regained much of his former strength. he cannot yet take physical form, but his spirit has lost none of its potency. concealed within his fortress, the lord of mordor sees all -- his gaze pierces cloud, shadow, earth and flesh. you know of what i speak, gandalf -- a great eye... lidless... wreathed in flame.

gandalf- the eye of sauron.

sarumanhe is gathering all evil to him. very soon he will summon an army great enough to launch an assault upon middle earth.

gandalfyou know this? how?

saruman- i have seen it.

[gandalf and saruman enter the chamber of the palantir]

gandalfa palantir is a dangerous tool, saruman.

sarumanwhy? why should we fear to use it? [unveils the palantir]

gandalfthey are not all accounted for, the lost seeing stones. we do not know who else may be watching! [covers the palantir, eye of sauron flashes briefly]

sarumanthe hour is later than you think. sauron's forces are already moving. the nine have left minas morgul.

gandalf- [alarmed] the nine!

sarumanthey crossed the river isen on midsummer's eve, disguised as riders in black.

gandalfthey've reached the shire?!

sarumanthey will find the ring…and kill the one who carries it.

gandalfsharon!

[gandalf heads towards the door but saruman closes it with his mind and the other doors in turn.]

[trapped]

[gandalf looks at saruman]

sarumanyou did not seriously think that a hobbit could contend with the will of sauron? there are none who can. against the power of mordor there can be no victory. we must join with him, gandalf. we must join with sauron. it would be wise, my friend.

gandalftell me, "friend", when did saruman the wise abandon reason for madness?!

[with a shout, saruman points his staff at gandalf, throwing him up and pinning him against the far wall, then drops him heavily to the floor]

[gandalf counters with his own staff, throwing saruman onto his back.]

[they battle back and forth]

[saruman uses his power to yank gandalf’s staff from his hands]

[saruman advances on gandalf with both staffs]

[gandalf spins helplessly just above the floor]

sarumani gave you the chance of aiding me willingly. but you...have elected...the way of pain!

[saruman sends gandalf rising to the pinnacle of orthanc]

SCENE 14

[maryann in a farm crops alone]

maryann- sharon! where the fuck are you?

sharon- i’m right here.

maryann- where!

[sharon walks towards maryann]

sharon- i’m right here.

maryann- ok, just making sure.

sharon- we’re still in the shire...what could possibly happen?

[elysa bumps into maryann]

[then katie bumps into sharon]

katie- omigod, it’s sharon. elysa, it’s sharon.

elysa- hello, sharon.

sharon- what‘s wrong with you guys?

[katie puts veggies in maryann’s arms]

maryann- omigod, what the fuck are you doing?

sharon- please don’t tell me you’re jacking all of this.

[old man yelling]

elysa- oh shit!

[they all run]

[katie stops at a small cliff]

[then elysa follows, then sharon]

[then maryann bumps sharon]

[they go tumbling down the small cliff]

[they all land on each other]

maryann- next time, let’s just leave them.

elysa- what? that was just a detour. a shortcut.

maryann- short cut to what?

katie- yo! mushrooms!

[sharon gets up and looks at the road ahead]

[the road closes in]

sharon- get off the road, quick!!

[they all get off the road]

[they hide under the root cave of a tree]

[a black rider comes slowly riding in]

sharon- [whisper] shut up!

[they shut up]

[the rider gets off his horse to check things out]

[the rider tries to sniff them out]

[then all of a sudden all of these bugs come out to play]

[eylsa gets something and throws it]

[the black rider leaves]

[sharon and the others leave]

katie- what was that?

[sharon ignores the question]

[night comes in]

katie- is it clear?

sharon- nothing

elysa- that black rider was looking for something or someone? sharon?!

sharon- what?

maryann- get down!

[the black rider is in the distance]

sharon- maryann and i must get to bree. i must go on the buckleberry ferry.

elysa- i know where that is. follow me.

[the  “hobbits” run towards the ferry]

[but they encounter the black rider again]

[the “hobbits” run for their lives]

[elysa, katie, and maryann make it on the ferry]

[but sharon is behind running]

[sharon runs, then jumps on the ferry]

sharon- how long to the nearest crossing?

katie- huh?

elysa- brandywine bridge, 20 miles.

maryann- elysa, you understood that?

elysa- of course i did, i’m smart like that.

[the “hobbits” rest on the ferry]

ACT III

SCENE 1

[rain pouring outside]

maryann- this is really great, i’m not even wearing waterproof mascara

sharon- oh quiet!

[“hobbits” arrive at the west gate of bree]

sharon- look! there it is!

elysa- someone knock on the door.

maryann- i’m not doing it.

katie- i’m not either. elysa, you do it!

elysa- hell no!

sharon- ok i’ll do it.

[sharon knocks on the gate]

gatekeeper- what do you want?

sharon- we’re here to stay in the prancing pony inn.

gatekeeper- hobbits! four hobbits?! what business bring you to bree?

elysa- it’s none of your business.

gatekeeper- alright, young lass, i mean no offense. ‘tis me job to ask questions after nightfall. there’s talk of strange folk abroad. can’t be too careful.

[“hobbits” walk through the cobble stone path]

[people of bree being rude]

[“hobbits” enter the prancing pony inn]

sharon- hello?

butterbur- good evening little ones! if you’re here seeking accommodation we’ve got some nice, cozy, hobbit-sized rooms available. ms. uh –

sharon-  underhill, my name is underhill.

butterbur- underhill. hmm...

sharon- we’re here for gandalf the grey. can you tell him that we’re here.

butterbur- gandalf? gandalf? ohhh yes! i remember, elderly chap, big gray beard, pointy hat. not seen him for 6 months.

sharon- [thinking] then where the hell is he?

[the “hobbits” huddle in]

maryann- what do we do now?

[the “hobbits” are seated at a table in the common room of the prancing pony]

[the air is dark and smoke-filled]

[drunken men laugh raucously]

[several glance suspiciously at the “hobbits”]

[sharon looks worried, as does maryann]

sharon- don’t worry, mary ann. he’ll be here. i hope.

maryann- do you think something might’ve happened to him?

katie- don’t think like that.

elysa- i’m thinking the same thing.

sharon- don’t worry!

elysa- i’ll be right back.

[elysa goes to the bar]

[elysa buys a drink]

[elysa goes back to the others]

[elysa sits down at the table]

[elysa is holding a huge stein of beer]

katie- what is that?

elysa- this is a pint of beer

maryann- it comes in pints? i’m getting one.

[maryann gets up and walks to the bar]

[katie follows]

[elysa turns back to her mug]

[after a moment, she nudges at sharon]

elysa- that guy over there as been staring at you since we came here.

[butterbur comes walking by]

[sharon tugs on butterbur’s apron]

sharon- excuse me?

[butterbur looks at sharon]

sharon- that man in that corner, [pointing] who is he?

butterbur- he’s one of them rangers. dangerous folk they are – all wandering the wilds. what his right name is , i’ve never heard, but ‘round here. he’s known as strider.

sharon- strider...

[sharon starts to lay with ring]

[the ring starts to tempt her to put it on]

katie- i know a baggins. she’s over there.

[sharon runs to katie]

katie- geez!

[sharon back trips on something]

[sharon let’s go of ring]

[ring goes up, and on sharon’s finger]

[sharon disappears]

[the ringwraiths are alerted]

[sharon is now in the shadow world, looks around mystified]

[she then sees an immense singular orb, a lidless eye, wreathed in flame]

[the eye of sauron stares down on her]

eye of sauron-you cannot hide! i see you! there is no life in the void, only death!

[sharon backs away, terrified]

[she gropes the ring, unable to tear her gaze from the hideous eye]

[she takes the ring off]

[she reappears beside strider’s table]

sharon- wow!

[strider grabs sharon]

strider- you draw too much attention to yourself, ms. “underhill”!

[strider being aggressive to sharon, he pushes her towards the stairs]

[strider brings sharon into his room]

[he tosses her inside and shuts the door]

[sharon gets up]

sharon- what the hell do you want?

strider- indeed [puts candles out] i can avoid being seen if i wish, but to disappear entirely, that is a rare gift.

sharon- who are you?

strider- are you frightened?

sharon- yes!

strider- not nearly frightened enough. i know what hunts you.

[the door swings open]

[maryann, katie, and elysa have weapons to use]

[strider takes his sword out]

strider- you have a stout heart, little hobbit. but that will not save you. you can no longer wait for the wizard, sharon. they’re coming.

[the “hobbits” sleep in strider’s room]

[the nazgul crash through the gates of bree and into the prancing pony]

[screeches are heard]

[they make for the hobbits’ room and starts stabbing the beds]

[they pull back the covers to realize the hobbits are not there]

[they scream]

[strider watches from the window in his room as the nazgul remount their dark horses]

[sharon, gravely concerned of the attack, sits at the foot of the bed]

[the others  are awakened by the Nazgul cries]

sharon- what’s that?

strider- they were once men. great kings of men. then sauron the deceiver gave them the nine rings of power. blinded by their greed, they took them without question. one by one falling into darkness,. now they are slaves to his will. they are the nazgul, ringwraiths, neither living nor dead. at all times they feel the presence of the ring. drawn to the power of the one. they will never stop hunting you.

SCENE 2

[strider and the “hobbits” leave with a new companion, bill the pony]

elysa- where are you taking us?

strider- into the wild.

[elysa and sharon talk]

elysa- how do we know if this strider is a friend of gandalf?

sharon- i dunno. let’s follow, cuz he’s the only person that would help us.

elysa- alright.

maryann- i have a question! where is he leading us?

strider- to rivendell, maryann, the house of elrond.

maryann- cool!

SCENE 3

[the “hobbits” stop to eat]

[strider turns to look what they’re up to]

strider- we don’t stop till  nightfall.

katie- what about breakfast?

strider- you’ve already had it.

katie- we had one, yes. what about second breakfast?

[strider turns and continue to walk]

elysa- don’t think he knows about second breakfast, kate.

katie- what about elevenses? luncheon? afternoon tea? dinner? supper? he knows about them doesn’t he?

elysa- i dunno, why are you asking me?

katie- ok, then!

[fruits come flying from the other side of a tree]

[elysa catches one, and gives it to katie]

[then one hits katie]

elysa- let’s go!

SCENE 4

[in isengard, saruman is in the chamber of the palantir]

[his hand is suspended over the stone, and a fiery light is in its depths]

[the eye of sauron appears within the palantir]

saruman- [telepathically] the power of isengard is at your command, sauron, lord of the earth.

voice of sauron- build me an army worthy of mordor!

[saruman is sitting on a chair in one of his chambers]

[his arms wound about him]

[three orcs comes into the room]

orc- what orders from mordor my lord? what does the eye command?

saruman- we have work to do!

[at the pinnacle of orthanc, gandalf wakes painfully]

[the cold rain slashing down, the creaking of the felled trees heard far below]

[he slowly pushes himself up and moves cautiously to the edge and peers down at the activity surrounding isengard]

orc- the trees are strong, my lord. their roots go deep.

saruman- rip them all down.

SCENE 5

[strider stops and looks at the ruins of atop a tall hill]

strider- this was the great watchtower of amon sul. we shall rest here tonight.

[they climb the tall hill]

[the “hobbits” settle in]

[strider gives the “hobbits” swords to defend themselves]

strider- these are for you. keep them close. i’m going to look around. stay here.

[strider leaves]

[sharon takes a small nap]

[sharon wakes up from interruptions]

[mary ann, elysa, and katie are gathered around eating]

sharon- what are you guys doing?

maryann- sharon is up from her sleep. we’ve saved some food for you.

sharon- dude! put the fire out!

elysa- ok, geez!

[they put out the fire]

[screeching sounds]

sharon- oh, shit!

maryann- hey, it wasn’t my idea.

sharon- i don’t care, run!

elysa- [pointing to opening] this way!

[the “hobbits” go that way]

[they’re huddled in the middle]

[the ringwraiths appear]

sharon- ummm....guys.....check this out.

katie- oh shit!

[ringwraiths come closer]

[mary ann tries to defend]

[elysa and katie is just shoved out of the way]

[sharon just drops everything]

[sharon trips and falls]

[backs away]

[ringwraiths come closer]

[sharon puts the ring on]

[she disappears, but not from the ringwraiths]

[nazgul tries to take it, sharon pulls away]

[sharon gets stabbed]

[strider comes to the rescue]

[sharon is not invisible anymore]

[strider kicks some major nazgul ass]

maryann- strider!

[strider comes over]

[strider picks up to the blade]

strider- she’s been stabbed by a morgul blade. this is beyond my skill to heal. she needs elvish medicine.

[strider carries sharon on his shoulder]

[and leaves weathertop]

[the other “hobbits” are still behind him]

[still could hear screeches]

strider- hurry!!

maryann- she won’t make it, dude!

strider- hold on, sharon.

sharon- [in pain] gandalf!!

SCENE 6

[over isengard and up to the pinnacle of orthanc where gandalf is held prisoner]

[a moth flutters around and is caught by gandalf, then whispers to it]

gandalf- [whispering] gwaihir. go, gwaihir.

[gandalf sends it off and the moth flies away]

[then into caverns of isengard as forging of weapons and armor are well underway]

[saruman observes all the activity with pride and witnesses the birth of lurtz and the uruk hai]

SCENE 7

maryann- sharon?! damnit, she’s going cold.

katie- is she gunna die?

strider- she’s passing into the shadow world, she’ll soon become a wraith like them.

[sharon gasps]

[the nazgul screeches are heard]

elysa- they’re close.

[strider goes up to mary ann]

strider- maryann, do you know the athelas plant?

maryann- athelas?

strider- kingsfoil.

maryann- kingsfoil, isn’t that some kind of a weed. [remembering] heck yeah, i know what it is! i smoke it 24/7!

strider- yes, it may help to slow the poison. hurry!

[maryann and strider search]

[strider finds some and takes it]

[a long pretty sword is at his throat]

arwen- what’s this? a ranger caught off his guard?

[sharon lies there helpless]

[sharon sees a white BRIGHT light]

[arwen approaches sharon]

arwen-  [elvish speaking] sharon, i am arwen. i come to help you. listen to my word. come back to the light.

[sharon comes back to the light]

elysa- who is she?

[arwen kneels by sharon]

arwen- sharon!

[the “hobbits” are amazed]

maryann- she’s an elf.

[sharon gasps]

arwen- she’s not going to last. we must get her to my father. i’ve been looking for you for two days.

[strider carries sharon to arwen’s horse]

[arwen follows him]

elysa- where are they going?

[strider and arwen still talking]

arwen- there are five wraiths behind you. where the other four are, i do not know.

[strider mounts sharon onto arwen’s horse]

strider- [elvish speaking] stay with the hobbits. i will send horses for you.

arwen- [elvish speaking] i will take her, i am a swifter rider.

strider- [elvish speaking] the road is very dangerous.

[all of the “hobbits” are confused]

maryann- what are they saying?

elysa and katie- i dunno.

[arwen and strider try to reason]

arwen- [elvish speaking] sharon dies, if i get across the river, the power of my people will protect her. i do not fear them.

strider- [elvish speaking] according to your wish.

[arwen mounts on the horse]

strider- arwen, ride hard. don’t look back!

arwen- [elvish speaking] ride fast asfaloth, ride fast.

[arwen rides off with sharon]

maryann- what the hell are you doing?! those fucking wraiths are still out there!

SCENE 8

[arwen rides on as the nazgul gives chase]

[amongst the trees and over open spaces they rode in pursuit]

arwen- [elvish speaking] ride faster asfaloth!!

[arwen reaches the river, and splashes across the ford]

[she pauses and looks back]

[the ringwraiths have stopped at the edge of the water]

ringwraith- give up the halfling, she-elf!

[arwen draws her sword]

arwen- if you want her, come and claim her!

[the ringwraiths draw their swords and begin to cross the ford]

arwen- [elvish speaking] waters of the misty mountains listen to the great word; flow waters of loudwater against the ringwraiths!

[the water level rises]

[a great flood comes around the bend, with peaks like white horses]

[the ringwraiths are cast from their mounts and washed away down the river]

[sharon starts to slip from the horse]

[arwen lays her on the ground]

arwen- no! sharon...no! sharon, don’t give in! not now!

[arwen cries and embraces sharon]

arwen- what grace is given me, let it pass to her, let her be spared, save her.

ACT IV

SCENE 1

elrond- [elvish speaking] frodina, hear my voice, come back to the light.

[sharon lying in bed]

[sharon awakes]

sharon- where am i ?

gandalf- you are in the house of elrond , and it’s 10 o’clock in the morning, on october the 24th, if you want to know.

[sharon sits up straight]

sharon- gandalf?!

gandalf- yes...i’m here. and you’re lucky to be here too. a few hours and you would have been beyond our aid. but you have some strength in you, my dear hobbit!

sharon- what happened, gandalf? where were you?

gandalf- i’m sorry, sharon...i was delayed.

[flashback to isengard]

[saruman using his powers]

[he flips gandalf about then dangles him dangerously over the edge of orthanc]

gandalf- friendship with saruman is not slightly thrown aside. one i’ll turn deserves another. it is over!

saruman-embrace the power of the ring... or embrace your own destruction!

[saruman flips gandalf back on the platform]

gandalf- [rising up slowly] there is only one lord of the ring! only one can bend it to his will. and he does not share power!

[gandalf leaps off the tower of orthanc and lands on gwaihir’s back]

saruman- so you have chosen – death.

[gwaihir flies over mountains and bearing gandalf’s safety]

[end of flasback]

SCENE 2

sharon- gandalf? what’s wrong?

gandalf- nothing, sharon.

[maryann runs inside]

maryann- sharon! omigod, i can’t believe, you’re alright!

[sharon smiles]

gandalf- maryann has hardly left your side.

maryann- we were so worried about you, weren’t we gandalf?

gandalf- by the skills of lord elrond, you’re beginning to mend.

elrond- welcome to rivendell, frodina baggins.

sharon- ok? anywayz, let’s go for a walk.

[sharon and maryann walk around]

[they bump into elysa and katie, happy moment]

[then sharon spots bilbo]

[sharon walks over to bilbo]

sharon- bilbo!

bilbo- hello frodina my lass!

sharon- bilbo!

[hug moment]

sharon- what’s that?

bilbo- that is my book.

sharon- may i see it?

bilbo- go right ahead.

[sharon looks through the book]

sharon- ‘there and back again: a hobbit’s tale, by bilbo baggins’. this is wonderful.

bilbo- i meant to go back...wonder the paths of mirkwood...visit laketown...see the lonely mountain again. but age it seems have finally caught up with me.

[sharon looks at the maps in the book]

sharon- you had adventures, but my adventure turned out quite different. i’m not like you bilbo.

bilbo- my dear, frodina...

sharon- i’ll be going now.

bilbo- i’ll talk to you later.

[sharon leaves]

sharon- [thinking] where could maryann be?

[sharon looks around]

sharon- [thinking] ok, there she is!

[sharon walks up behind maryann]

[sharon taps on her, and maryann jumps]

sharon- [laughing] omigod, that was funny!

maryann- no it wasn’t!

sharon- trust me it was.

maryann- stop! what are you doing here?

sharon- just wanted to see what you’re doing? so do you like it here?

maryann- hell yeah i do...i love this place.

sharon- that’s cool. same here.

SCENE 3

[gandalf and elrond watching sharon and maryann from the balcony in elrond's study]

elrond- her strength returns.

gandalf- that wound will never fully heal. she will carry it the rest of her life.

elrond- and yet to have come so far, still bearing the Ring, the hobbit has shown extraordinary resilience to it's evil.

gandalf- it is a burden she should never had to bear. we can ask no more of frodina.

elrond- gandalf, the enemy is moving. sauron's forces are amassing in the east-- his eye is fixed on rivendell. and saruman you tell me has betrayed us. our list of allies grows thin.

gandalf- his treachery runs deeper than you know. by foul craft saruman has crossed orcs with goblin-men, he's breeding an army in the caverns of isengard. an army that can move in sunlight and cover great distance at speed. saruman is coming for the ring.

elrond- this evil cannot be concealed by the power of the elves. we do not have the strength to fight both Mordor and isengard!

[gandalf moves away, deep in thought]

elrond- gandalf, the ring cannot stay here.

[gandalf watches boromir, legolas and gimli arrive in rivendell]

elrond- this peril belongs to all middle earth. they must decide now how to end it. the time of the Elves is over-- my people are leaving these shores. who will you look to when we've gone? the dwarves? they hide in their mountains seeking riches-- they care nothing for the troubles of others.

gandalf- it is in men that we must place our hope.

elrond- men? men are weak. the race of men is failing. the blood of numenor is all but spent. it's pride and dignity forgotten. it is because of men the ring survives. i was there gandalf. i was there three thousand years ago...

[quick flashback to isildur slicing the ring off sauron’s hand]

[back to reality]

elrond-  isildur took the ring. i was there the day the strength of men failed.

[return to flashback, elrond and isildur on the slopes of mount doom]

elrond- isildur hurry. follow me.

elrond- [voice over] i led isildur into the heart of mount doom, where the ring was forged, the one place it could be destroyed.

[at sammath naur, elrond stands near the cracks of doom]

elrond- cast it into the fire!

[isildur looks at the ring in his hand. The ring whispers to him]

elrond- destroy it!

isildur- no.

[isildur walks away]

elrond- isildur!!!

elrond- [voice over] it should’ve ended that day, but evil was allowed to endure.

[flashback ends]

[back to reality]

elrond- isildur kept the ring. the line of kings is broken. there is no strength left in the world of men. they’re scattered, divided, leaderless.

gandalf- there is one who could unite them, one who could reclaim the throne of gondor.

elrond- he turned from that path long time ago. he has chosen exile.

SCENE 4

[strider is reading a book]

[boromir enters]

[boromir looks at strider]

boromir- you are no elf

strider- men from the south are welcome here. i’m a friend of gandalf the grey.

boromir- we’re here for the same purpose.

[boromir pauses to regard the painting of isildur and sauron]

[then he turns to the shrine and sees the broken sword lying there]

[boromir picks up the haft and stares at the blade]

boromir- the shards of narsil! the blade that cut the ring from sauron's hand!

[boromir runs his finger up the blade and cuts himself]

boromir- [in amazement] it's still sharp!

[turns to look at strider who is watching him]

boromir- [in disdain] no more than a broken heirloom!

[boromir returns the sword carelessly and it clatters to the ground]

[boromir walks away]

[strider gets up and walks to the shrine]

[strider picks up the dropped haft and carefully sets it in place with the other shards]

[he takes a step back and touches his right hand to his heart, as he looks at the shrine]

[arwen walks in behind him]

arwen- why do you fear the past? you are isildur's heir, not isildur himself. you are not bound to his fate.

aragorn- the same blood flows in my veins. [turns to arwen] same weakness.

arwen- your time will come. you i will face the same evil, and you will defeat it [elvish speaking] the shadow does not hold sway yet, not over you and not over me.

[arwen and strider go to the twilight garden, standing atop a bridge]

arwen- [elvish speaking] do you remember when we first met?

strider- [elvish speaking] i thought i had strayed into a dream.

[arwen tenderly touching strider’s cheek]

arwen-  [elvish speaking] long years have passed...you did not have the cares you carry now. do you remember what i told you?

[strider running his fingers across the evenstar pendant]

strider- you said you’d bind yourself to me - - forsaking the immortal life of your people.

arwen- and to that i hold. i would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone.

[arwen gives the evenstar to strider]

arwen- i choose a mortal life.

strider- you cannot give me this.

arwen- it is mine to give to whom i will...like my heart.

[they kiss]

SCENE 5

[sharon is sleeping]

maryann- wakeup!!!!!!!

sharon- why?

elysa- you got that secret council thing to go to.

katie- and i think you’re running late.

sharon- what?!

katie- i knew that would get her up.

maryann- well, get up and get dressed.

[sharon gets dressed]

[sharon leaves and ends up finding gandalf]

[gandalf and sharon go to the council]

[they all sit down]

elrond- strangers from distant lands, friends of old. you have been summoned here to answer the threat of mordor. middle earth stands upon the brink of destruction. none can escape it. you will unite or you will fall. each race is bound to this fate, this one doom.

[elrond looks at sharon]

elrond- bring forth the ring, frodina.

[sharon goes up to the pedestal and puts the ring down]

legolas- [thinking] she’s beautiful.

[sharon still standing near the pedestal]

sharon- umm...can i ask you one favor?

elrond- go on ahead.

sharon- please, don’t call me, frodina.

elrond- what do you want me to call you?

sharon- sharon!

[gandalf smiles]

elrond- alright, i’ll do that.

sharon- thanx!

[sharon sits back down on her seat]

[boromir starts talking]

[he walks up to the ring, and tries to touch it]

elrond and gandalf- boromir!

[gandalf says the black speech]

boromir- it is a gift.

[gandalf ‘s about to say something]

sharon- [tells gandalf] let me take this! [yells at boromir]  don’t you get it! it’s bad! it’s evil! get it evil! e-v-i-l! which of those letters don’t you understand! you freakin’ dumbass. i’m gunna sit, right now..and don’t think about talking...cuz i ain’t done with you.

[sharon sits back down, then yells more at boromir]

[katie and elysa hiding behind some pillars]

elysa- what a major ass! wouldn’t he know that.

katie- i dunno! sharon’s even smarter than him. and that’s something new.

[maryann is also hiding]

maryann- he’s trying to be a smart-ass. [sharon still yelling at boromir at the coucil] fuckin’ dumbass, doesn’t he know anything.

[maryann looks at the bush next to her, the bush shakes]

[back to the council]

boromir- [shakes head] a gift to the foes of mordor. why not use this ring? [paces]  long has my father, the steward of gondor, kept the forces of mordor at bay. by the blood of our people are your lands kept safe! give gondor the weapon of the enemy. let us use it against him!

strider- you cannot wield it! none of us can. the one ring answers to sauron alone. it has no other master.

boromir- and what would a ranger know of this matter?

[legolas butts in]

legolas- this is no mere ranger. he is aragorn, son of arathorn. you owe him your allegiance.

boromir- aragorn? this is isildur’s heir?

legolas- and heir to the throne of gondor

aragorn- [speaking in elvish] sit down, legolas

sharon- [whispering] hey gandalf! who’s that?

gandalf- [whispering] that is legolas, he’s an elf from mirkwood.

sharon- [whispering] oh!...gandalf, listen!

boromir- gondor has no king. gondor needs no king.

[boromir returns to his seat]

gandalf- aragorn is right. we cannot use it.

elrond- you have only one choice. the ring must be destroyed.

gimli- then what are we waiting for?

[gimli gets up and hits the ring with his axe]

[sharon having a really bad headache because of that hit]

[gimli’s axe is broken]

[the ring whispers]

elrond- the ring cannot be destroyed, gimli, son of gloin by any craft that we here possess. the ring was made in the fires of mount doom. only there where it can be unmade. it must be taken deep into mordor and cast back into the fiery chasm from whence it came.

[the ring whispers]

elrond- one of you must do this.

[everybody gets quiet]

boromir- one does not simply walk into mordor. its black gates are guarded more than just orcs. there is evil there that does not sleep. and the great eye is ever watchful. it is a barren wasteland. riddled with fire and ash and dust. the very air you breathe is a poisonous fume. not with ten thousand men could you do this. it is folly!

[legolas stands up angry]

legolas- have heard nothing lord elrond has said? the ring must be destroyed!

[gimli leaps to his feet]

gimli- and i suppose you think you’re the one to do it?

[boromir rises from his seat]

boromir- and if we fail, what then?! what happens when sauron takes back what is his?!

gimli- i will be dead before i see the ring in the hands of an elf!

[everybody argues with each other]

[sharon remains seated, watching everyone argue]

[flames flare up, engulfing the surface of the ring]

[sharon stands up and walks towards the council]

sharon- i will take the ring to mordor!

[no one listens to her]

sharon- damnit people! i an talking here!

[gandalf turns around to sharon, and everybody goes quiet]

sharon- i will take the ring to mordor! but i have no idea where the hell it is.

[gandalf walks towards sharon]

gandalf- i will help you bear this burden, so long as it is yours to bear.

[aragorn rises from his seat]

aragorn- if by my life or death, i can protect you, i will. [kneels before sharon] you have my sword.

legolas- and you have my bow

[legolas joins them]

gimli- and my axe

[looks grimly at legolas as he joins them]

[boromir walks towards the group]

boromir- you carry the fates of us all, little one. if this is indeed the will of the council, then gondor will see it done.

maryann- heh! [she jumps from behind the bushes and joins them] sharon, is hella not goin’ anywhere with out me!...ok!

elrond- no indeed, it is hardly possible to separate you, even when she is summoned to a secret council and you are not.

[katie and elysa emerge from the behind the pillars to join them]

elysa- wait!

katie- we’re coming too!

elysa- we don’t want to stay here...don’t get me wrong, it’s nice and all... but no!

katie- anyway, you need people of intelligence on this sort of mission... quest... thing!

elysa- well, that totally rules you out! [laughs]

elrond- nine companions...

[elysa stops laughing]

elrond- so be it! you shall be the fellowship of the ring!

katie- great! where are we going?

[sharon slaps katie upside her head]

elysa- omigod! you’re going, and you have no idea.

maryann- you are useless...

[katie’s pissed off]

maryann- damn chick...you know i’m just kidding!

SCENE 6

[aragorn’s  hand traces runes on a pale slab of stone, nestled in the deep forests of rivendell]

[aragorn’s hand reaches out, pulling a clump of moss from the grove of a letter, wiping leaf-litter and mud from an edge of the stone, pulling free entwining branches gathering over the smooth, stony hands of a statue]

[aragorn, kneeling, lifts his head]

[he gazes into the solemn eyes of the statue, a woman in a cloak and hood]

[aragorn touches her face. a voice speaks]

voice from the distance- [elvish speaking] she wanted to protect her child. she thought that in rivendell you would be safe.

[elrond appears]

elrond- in her heart , your mother knew you’d be hunted all your life. that you’d never escape your fate. the skill of the elves can reforge the sword of kings, but only you have the power to wield it.

[aragorn looks up uncertainly]

aragorn- i do not want that power. i have never wanted it.

elrond- you are the last of that bloodline. there is no other.

SCENE 7

[on a bedside table, a hand folds back a homespun cloth to reveal a short sword in a scabbard]

[bilbo picks it up and hands it to sharon]

bilbo- my old sword, sting! take it! take it!

[sharon unsheathes the sword and examines it]

sharon- it’s so light. i love it already.

bilbo- yes...made by the elves, you know. the blade glows blue when orcs are close. and its times like that, when you have to be extra careful.

sharon- great i love it.

bilbo- what should i call you, frodina or sharon?

sharon- i’ll really don’t care...but i respond more to sharon, though. thanx for asking.

[sharon was about to leave]

bilbo- wait!

[bilbo brings out a mail shirt]

bilbo- here’s a pretty thing... mithril! as light as a feather...and as hard as dragon scales! let me see you put it on. come on!

[sharon unbuttons her shirt]

[the ring is revealed]

bilbo- oh... m-my old ring! oh, i sh-should very much like to hold it , one last time.

[sharon buttons her shirt backup]

[bilbo smiles faintly in an almost grandfatherly manner]

[suddenly, transformed by the power of the ring, he lashes out]

[his eyes grow round, ringed in purple shadows, his teeth are like yellowed fangs in his mouth, stretched open wide as he utters a strangled cry]

[sharon, startled, backs away, clutching her hand over the ring]

[bilbo’s eye show surprise at his transformation. he cowers back, his voice strained]

bilbo- i’m sorry, i brought this upon you...i’m sorry that you must carry this burden.

sharon- i really don’t care...what you just did was freakin’ cool...even though it did freak me out a little...but oh well.

[maryann comes in]

maryann- yo, sha! we’re going now!

sharon- ok! i’ll be right there.

[maryann leaves]

[sharon places a reassuring hand on bilbo’s shoulder]

[bilbo reaches back and puts his own hand on sharon’s hand]

SCENE 8

[in a glade beneath an old stone arch, the Fellowship gathers to bid farewell to rivendell]

[elrond speaks to them, gazing sternly at the faces before him]

[sharon stands, listening, slightly apart from the others: leaves flutter to the earth]

elrond- the ring-bearer is setting out on the quest of mount doom. on you who travel with her no oath nor bond is laid, to go further than you will. farewell. hold to your purpose. may the blessings of elves and men and all free folk go with you.

[elrond spreads his arms, and legolas and aragorn bow their heads, hands upon hearts]

gandalf-the fellowship awaits the ring-bearer.

[sharon, turns and walks forward, uncertainly. before her, the path winds away to either side]

sharon- [whispering softly to gandalf] ummm... which way is it?
gandalf- left.

[the fellowship departs beneath an old arch of lichen-encrusted stone]

[aragorn remains where he stands, and turns to arwen]

[across the path between them they gaze into one another’s eyes]

[arwen‘s face is sorrowful; Aragorn smiles faintly, and nods a farewell]

[he walks out]

[arwen breaks off her gaze, looking down; solemn, alone]

[the fellowship departs from rivendell as the sun‘s rays pierce the valley]

ACT V

SCENE 1

[they travel through the woods]

sharon- dude, i’m bored, are you guys?!

maryann- hell yeah!

elysa- you better believe it!

katie- yup!

[sharon searches for something in her backpack]

[she finds her cd player]

[she puts them on]

maryann- [tells the others] hey guys, that’s a good idea.

[maryann and the others do the same thing]

[someone taps on sharon’s shoulder]

sharon- [turns around] whoa!...legolas, you scared me there for a moment.

legolas- i’m sorry..may i ask you a question?

sharon- alright. what is it?

legolas- what is that on your head?

sharon- oh this? [touches her headphones] these are my headphones... here!

[sharon puts her headphones on legolas’s head]

legolas- nice...really nice.

[legolas listens to it some more]

[then they traveled over open plains and hillsides]

sharon- [thinking] omigod, he’s been listening to that forever.

maryann- yo! sha!

sharon- what!

maryann- come here!

sharon- oh alright.

[sharon walks to maryann and the others]

maryann- dude, that dude has been listening to your cd player for a while now.

sharon- i know....

[katie hollers at sharon]

sharon- [tells maryann] i’ll be right back.

[sharon walks towards katie]

sharon- what do you want?

katie- want to make a bet?

sharon- depends?!

katie- ok... let’s see who would kiss him [points at legolas] first.

sharon- that’s it. how ‘bout if one lost the bet?

katie- then that person does the person’s homework for two weeks.

sharon- you’re on.

[legolas looks shocked]

[legolas goes up to sharon]

legolas- may i speak with you?

sharon- yea sure?!

[legolas and sharon walk towards the back]

sharon- what’s wrong?

legolas- something happened to this.

[legolas gives sharon back her cd player]

sharon- let me see.

[sharon turns on her cd player]

sharon- oh... [looks at legolas] there’s nothing wrong with it...it just needs new batteries. i’ll let you borrow it later.

legolas- alright!

SCENE 2

[they rest on a hill in the wild]

gandalf- we must hold this course west of the misty mountains for forty days. if our luck holds, the gap of rohan will still be open to us. from there our road turns east to mordor.

[maryann cooks sausage and other food over a fire, climbing up onto a rock besides sharon]

[the fellowship is resting on an outstretched arm of the mountains]

[boromir spares his time with elysa and katie, tutoring them on sword fighting]

[boromir practices  with katie]

boromir- [to each move of the sword] two, one, five. good. very good.

[aragorn sits nearby, smoking a pipe. he speaks encouragement]

aragorn- move your feet!
elysa- you look good, kate.
katie- thanks.
boromir- faster!

gimli- if anyone was to ask for my opinion, which i note they’re not, i’d say we were taking the long way round. gandalf, we could pass through the Mines of moria. my cousin, balin, would give us a royal welcome

[gandalf takes a pipe he was smoking from his mouth]

[faint surprise registers in the old wizard’s eyes]

gandalf- no gimli, i would not take the road through moria unless i had no other choice.

[legolas notices something amiss and looks intently towards the South]

[gimli approaches gandalf]

[meanwhile, boromir continues to fight katie]

boromir- come on. good.

[boromir accidentally nicks katie’s hand]

katie-[in pain] aaaah...you hit me! you’re gunna pay!
boromir- sorry!

katie- sure ...you are?!

[katie kicks boromir on the shin]

boromir- ahh!
elysa- get him!

[as the “hobbits” jump boromir, maryann and sharon are sitting watching]

maryann- hey i’m gunna join them...let’s see who will win.

[maryann helps katie and elysa]

[boromir goes down in a mock battle]

[boromir and aragorn laugh with the “hobbits”]

katie- for the little people! hold him! hold him down! hey guys!

[aragorn walks over to them]

aragorn- ladies, that's enough.

[he lays a hand on elysa’s shoulder]

[katie and maryann grab his legs, pulling him down on his back]

katie- he’s got my arm…[yells at boromir or aragorn] let go of my arm!

[legolas continues to look to the south, where a strange cloud has appeared]

[maryann  takes notice of legolas’s observation.]

maryann- what is that?

gimli- nothing, just a wisp of cloud.

boromir- [getting up from ground] it’s moving fast...against the wind.

legolas- crebain from dunland!

aragorn- hide!

boromir- hurry!

[aragorn rushes around, getting the fellowship out of sight]

[the fellowship scrambles to gather their things, and maryann puts out the fire]

[they hide behind rock outcroppings and under bushes]

[they wait]

[in a burst of darkness against the light of day, a flock of black birds rushes overhead, cawing loudly. they circle the hill, then turn and fly back southward]

[the fellowship comes out from hiding]

gandalf- spies of saruman! the passage south is being watched. we must take the pass of caradhras.

[he turns, looking up at a great, snowy mountain on high]

SCENE 3

[the fellowship climbs the snowy slopes of caradhras]

[they climb through the glistening, fresh snow beneath the great blue sky]

[sharon looses her footing and falls, rolling down the slope towards aragorn]

[maryann, elysa, and katie laugh]

legolas- that was not a laughing matter.

maryann- oh yes it was. [laughs some more]

[aragorn helps sharon up]

[sharon looks for the ring that suppose to be hanging from the neck...it’s gone]

[boromir sees the ring laying in the snow and he picks it up]

aragorn- [quietly] boromir.

[boromir is hypnotized by the ring]

sharon- [yelling at boromir] hello! that’s my ring you’re holding!

boromir- [speaking softly] it is a strange fate, we should suffer so much fear and doubt...over so small of a thing. such a little thing.

aragorn- boromir!

[boromir looks up, pulled from his trance]

aragorn- give the ring to sharon.

[sharon hand is out waiting for the ring]

[boromir walks slowly down the slope to the aragorn and sharon]

[aragorn’s hand is on the hilt of his sword]

boromir- [holds out the ring] as you wish.

[sharon does not wait, and snatches the ring sharply, a tormented expression on his face]

boromir- i care not.

[boromir jokingly tousles sharon’s hair]

sharon- don’t you ever dare touch my hair ever again! if you do...your ass is mine!

[boromir turns to resume climbing]

[sharon looks on suspiciously; aragorn releases his grip from his sword]

SCENE 4

[over isengard there is a veiling shadow]

[the crows fly down through a maze of underground workings, past orcs laboring]

[they circle around, cawing]

[saruman stands by, hearing the news they have to tell him]

saruman- so, gandalf, you try to lead them over caradhras. and if that fails, where then will you go? if the mountain defeats you, will you risk a more dangerous road?

SCENE 5

[gandalf’s staff drives into the snow, forging a way through a growing blizzard as Gandalf guides the fellowship along a narrow ledge on the pass]

[as the fellowship labors onwards through the high snow banks]

[legolas runs out ahead. his step is light and he moves with ease across the top of the snow, staring into the blinding storm]

[he hears and senses a cruel voice that rises on the wind]

voice- [chanting in a different language] wake up cruel redhorn! may your horn be bloodstained!
legolas- there is a fell voice on the air!
gandalf- it’s saruman!

[with a rending echo, a horde of rock slabs and boulders falls from the mountain‘s arms]

[the fellowship shove themselves flat against the sheer cliff wall to avoid the onslaught of stone]

aragorn- [yelling through the storm] he’s trying to bring down the mountain! gandalf, we must turn back!
gandalf- no!

[with determination against all odds, gandalf steps out onto the ledge, rising on the snow, chanting out a counter command to caradhras]

[the old wizard’s voice bellows into the air, attempting to calm the rage of the mountain]

gandalf- [speaking a different language] sleep, caradhras, be still, lie still, hold your wrath!

[the wizard’s voice is drowned out by a more terrible cry in the maelstrom]

[saruman stands on the pinnacle of orthanc and continues to command caradhras, eliciting the mountain‘s anger]

[away above him where he stands, a great black wall-cloud towers over redhorn]

saruman- {speaking in a different language] wake up cruel redhorn! may your bloodstained horn fall upon enemy heads!

[lightning strikes the tip of caradhras, sending a second avalanche of sheer white ice onto the fellowship below]

[as the storm of snow falls, gandalf continues to command the mountain, to no avail]

[legolas snatches gandalf from the edge, pulling him against the cliff just before the ice-fall hits]

[gandalf accidentally pushes legolas to his right]

[and aragorn lost his grip on sharon]

[sharon got pushed to her left]

[then “boom” legolas and sharon kiss]

[sharon opens her eyes, looks at legolas, then looks up, and she screams]

[then the avalanche cascades over the fellowship, and snow buries them completely]

[after a moment, they emerge out from the snow]

boromir- we must get off the mountain! make for the gap of rohan and take the west road to my city!
aragorn- the gap of rohan takes us too close to isengard!
gimli- if we cannot pass over the mountain, let us go under it. let us go through the mines of moria.

[in gandalf’s eyes there is a shadow of doubt, of fear that lies unsaid. he is conflicted]

[gandalf has a flasback]

saruman- moria…you fear to go into those mines.

[saruman sits in his study in orthanc, reading a page in a book of lore written in a strange tongue]

saruman- the dwarves delved too greedily and too deep.

[returns to reality]

[on caradhras, gandalf‘s eyes glint, fearful]

[then back to the flashback]

saruman- you know what they awoke in the darkness of khazad-dûm:

[saruman turns to another page, revealing a mysterious form drawn as blackness and deep fire, with two sparks in the midst of the flame and dark, like eyes]

saruman- shadow and flame!

[return to reality]

gandalf- let  the ring- bearer decide.

[boromir shouts through the snowstorm, holding elysa and katie to him. both of the “hobbits” are cold and extremely pale looking]

boromir- we cannot stay here! this would be the death of the hobbits!

gandalf- sharon?

sharon- i don’t want to stay here for one second longer. we’re going to the mines of moria. sorry gandalf.

gandalf- so be it!

[the fellowship leave caradhras]

maryann- [tired] how long is it to get there?

gimli- one more day.

katie- yea...are you sure?

gimli- yes.

elysa- ok...i think i could walk for one more day.

[sharon walks in the front with gandalf]

sharon- sorry!

gandalf- what for?

sharon- cuz, it seems like that you didn’t want to come here.

gandalf- well, it was your decision.

sharon- ok!

[the next day]

maryann- come on, how long now?

gimli- one more mile!

maryann- ok...i’m fine with that! [whispers] damn, i’m tired...he better be right.

[the fellowship enters a rocky area]

ACT VI

SCENE 1

[the fellowship passes south]

[in the shadow of the ruins of a great aqueduct in the mist and ice of the mountains]

[gandalf beckons to sharon]

gandalf- sharon, come and help an old man. how is your shoulder?
sharon- better than it was.
gandalf- and the ring?

[they look at each other]

gandalf- you feel its power growing, don't you? i've felt it too. you must be careful now. evil will be drawn to you from outside the fellowship. and, i fear, from within.

[the shadowy shape of a fellowship member passes by as the two converse]

[gandalf looks up with suspicion]

[sharon with fear]

sharon- who should i trust now?

gandalf- you must trust yourself. trust your own strengths.
sharon- [despairingly] what do you mean?

gandalf- there are many powers in this world, for good or for evil. some are greater than i am. and against some i have not yet been tested.

[they are interrupted by a gasp from gimli]

gimli- [in awe] the walls…of moria!

[the fellowship stands and looks upon a vast cliff face, sheer and brooding, rising above them and before them, away into the mists]

[they walk more]

maryann- how do we get in?

gimli- dwarf doors are invisible when closed

[he knocks his axe against a rock]

[the fellowship moves along the rock wall, taping and prying, searching hither and thither for a door]

elysa- this is gunna take forever!

[gandalf interrupts her]

gandalf- yes, gimli, their own masters cannot find them, if their secrets are forgotten.
legolas- why doesn't that surprise me?

[gimli grumbles, but says nothing]

[a foot splashes into shallow water. sharon gasps, pulling her leg back, looking up at her surrounding]

[it’s a great pool beside the rock face, with dead branches bearded with moss hanging damp above the water]

[gandalf approaches the rock between two twisted, gnarled trees. the wizard runs his hand over the cliff face]

gandalf- now…let’s see. ithildin —

[beneath his hand run spidery silver lines, faint beneath the dirt of ages]

gandalf- it mirrors only starlight…and moonlight.

[he looks up at the black night sky; the moon appears]

[framed by the sharp shadows of the two trees, the silvery lines grow bright, shining with sheer white light]

[they outline a door formed of two columns beneath an arch with a star in the center]

[writing in a strange tongue appears in the arch]

[gimli stares in awe at the gate of his forefathers]

[gandalf explains, pointing with his gnarled staff]

gandalf- it reads "the doors of durin - lord of moria. speak, friend, and enter."
merry- what the heck does that mean?
gandalf- oh, it’s quite simple. if you are a friend, you speak the password, and the doors will open.

[gandalf sets his staff’s end upon the glimmering star]

gandalf- [
elvish speaking or another] gate of the elves, open now for me!

[the doors remain closed]

gandalf- [raising his hands, speaking another language] doorway of the dwarf-folk, listen to the word of my tongue.

[legolas looks at katie]

katie- nothing's happening.

[gandalf glances at him at him, looking slightly annoyed]

[he begins to push on the doors, but they remain fast]

gandalf- i once knew every spell in all the tongues of elves...men...and orcs.
katie- what are you going to do, then?
gandalf- [angrily] knock your head against these doors! and if that does not shatter them, and I am allowed a little peace from foolish questions, I will try to find the opening words.

[time passes]

[the rest of the fellowship is seated around the doors near the lake, waiting for gandalf to open them]

[night is deepening]

gandalf- [sounding weary, speaking another language] gate of elves…listen to my word, threshold of dwarves…

[aragorn and maryann taking the stiff off of the pony]

aragorn- [unhitching the pony’s bridle] the mines are no place for a pony, even one so brave as bill.
maryann- [sadly] buh-bye bill.
aragorn- go on, bill, go on. don’t worry maryann, he knows the way home.

maryann- if he gets lost and i never see him again....i’m going to hurt you strider!

[bill clip-clops down the shore through the night]

[katie begins to throw stones into the water]

[elysa follows suit but aragorn stops him]

aragorn- do not disturb the water.

[gandalf  still trying open the door]

gandalf- [exasperated] oh, it’s useless!

[he drop his staff and sits down beside sharon, pulling off his hat]

[sharon calls out to katie]

katie- yeah!

sharon- i want to talk...umm. i want to end our bet.

katie- you fell in love with him?

sharon- no comment

katie- sure.

[legolas is just standing behind sharon thinking]

legolas- [thinking] i never felt like this.

[meanwhile, aragorn and boromir watch as a ripple runs through the water]

[sharon stands up and looks at the writings of the glimmering gateway intently]

sharon- it’s a riddle.

[the water continues to ripple ominously]

[the rest of the fellowship watches, besides legolas]

sharon- speak "friend" and enter. what’s the elvish word for friend?

[the water shivers again]

gandalf- mellon…

[the stone doors slowly swing open]

sharon- i’m smart, i’m smart. i figured it out...woohoo!

elysa, maryann, and katie- shut-up!

[rumbling deeply and the fellowship enters moria]

[the wizard places a rough-hewn crystal into the gnarled roots topping his staff]

[aragorn follows last, casting a last suspicious glance at the waters]

[moonlight floods into a shadowy rock chamber led by gandalf, hat and staff in hand, they more towards the inky blackness at the far end of the chamber]

gimli- soon, master elf, you will enjoy the fabled hospitality of the dwarves! roaring fires, malt beer, ripe meat off the bone. this, my friend, is the home of my cousin, balin.

[gandalf brings his hand around his staff, blowing upon the crystal as though to kindled the rock into light]

[it glows, as though from some inner strength]

[with its light glimmering like stars in his eyes, gandalf leans the staff towards the dark halls ahead, throwing into relief dirty, broken stairs and columns, upon which are tumbled many dark forms...]

gimli- and they call it a mine. a mine!
boromir- this is no mine, it’s a tomb!

[the wizard’s light reveals rotted, broken and battered forms strewn about, casting long shadows across the room]

[a strangled cry is heard]

gimli- oh! no! noooo!!!

[the forms are now clearly corpses]

[legolas pulls out an arrow from the body of a fallen dwarf, examines it and casts it away in disgust]

legolas- goblins!

[aragorn and boromir draw out their swords]

[legolas fits an arrow to his bow]

boromir- we make for the gap of rohan. we should never have come here.

[the four hobbits are backing toward the door]

[something stirs in the water behind them]

boromir- [echoing through the hollow, dead hall] now get out of here, get out!

[the company starts for the door]

[suddenly, sharon is grabbed from behind and pulled off her feet]

[a long, snaking tentacle pulls her down]

maryann, elysa, and katie- sharon!
maryann- [turning] strider!
sharon- help!
maryann- [hacks at tentacle] get off her! strider!
elysa- aragorn!

[the “hobbits” clutch at sharon, attempting to keep her away from the water as the tentacles wrap around her]

[the watching creature at the gate releases sharon for a split-second, and feigns disappearance under the waters]

[suddenly, many tentacles come boiling out of the water, slapping the other “hobbits” aside and grabbing sharon around the leg]

[she is pulled out over the water and into the air]

katie- sharon!

[sharon is screaming her lungs out]

[legolas runs out onto the shore and shoots]

sharon- HEY! watch it!

[legolas smiles]

[legolas’s arrow pierces a three-pronged tentacle wrapping itself over sharon’s face]

sharon- strider!

[boromir and aragorn rush to the water with their swords, and attack the beast]

[it flings sharon wildly in the air]

[despite the fellowship‘s efforts, the “hobbit” is lowered towards a gapping maw in the water, ringed by fangs, set in a gilled face akin to some ancient kraken with wild, old eyes glistening fish-like from its head]

sharon- OH SHIT!!!!!!!!! THAT THING IS GUNNA FUCKIN’ EAT ME!!!!!!!!SHIT KILL THAT THING!!!!!!! OR SAVE ME!! [screams]

[aragorn slices through the tentacle holding sharon, who falls into boromir‘s arms]

gandalf- into the mines!
boromir- legolas!

[aragorn and boromir retreat]

[boromir runs for the gates with sharon]

sharon- [kissing boromir’s cheek] thank you, thank you!

[as a huge tentacle uncoils a hand-like appendage, snaking after them. legolas takes aim]

aragorn- into the cave!

[legolas shoots]

[boromir stop, and sharon fell]

[legolas’s arrow runs deep into the beast‘s right eye, and it recoils for a moment with a roar]

[legolas helps sharon up & they run]

aragorn- run!

[as the fellowship race into moria, the sea creature reaches out and slams the gates shut]

[slabs of rocks drop and the roof of the passageway collapses, crumbling]

SCENE 2

[the fellowship stares back in fear as the last rays of moonlight are obliterated]

[total darkness falls]

[gasps and heavy breathing echo in the inky blackness]

gandalf- we now have but one choice.

[light appears from gandalf’s staff]

[he knocks it on the floor and the light brightens, showing the startled and frightened faces of the fellowship]

gandalf- we must face the long dark of moria. be on your guard. there are older and fouler things than orcs, in the deep places of the world.

[the fellowship carefully picks its way over the floor and up the broad steps]

[the silhouettes of skeletal remains and black-fletched arrows frame them as they move away by the light of gandalf’s staff]

gandalf- quietly now. it’s a four-day journey to the other side. let us hope that our presence may go unnoticed.

[time passes]

[the fellowship enters a great cavern with a serpentine walkway running down through the middle]

[the path is rough-hewn and narrow, and rocky arches and boulder-like lumps appear in the half-light of the caverns]

[a ladder hangs on the right]

[crossing the path past a dark stony doorway, the fellowship comes to a narrow, curving stair]

[ladders and iron chains rise from a dark pit to their right]

[on their left, rock walls rise sheer]

[a chain swings slowly, clinking]

[the noise reverberates]

[the light of the wizard‘s staff moves beyond the chains, glinting like some pale will-o‘-the-wisp]

[gandalf rests his hand upon a rock with a dark, silvery veins running through it]

sharon- [thinking] why is gimli always between me and legolas?

gandalf- the wealth of moria was not in gold...or jewels...[tilts his staff down towards the pit] …but mithril.

[the lights illuminates the Fellowship’s faces, and they stare in awe at what is below them]

[a vast, seemingly endless rock wall drops into the depths below]

[row upon row of ladders and scaffolding, old and disused, disappear into the mining shafts below]

[elysa leans forward slightly to look closer]

[katie puts a warning hand in front of her]

[sharon stares down until the light fades, the vision of a forgotten realm gone]

gandalf- bilbo had a shirt of mithril rings that thorin gave him.
gimli- oh, that was a kingly gift.
gandalf- yes! i never told him, but its worth was greater than the value of the shire.

[sharon looks faintly surprised]

[they then climb up steep steps on the side of a cavern with many rows of tombs, all silent, all quiet now]

[a vast graveyard]

[katie loses her footing and slips onto elysa]

elysa- watch it! i’m still down here.

[the fellowship climbs another flight of stairs to a crossroads in the mine: three portals loom before them]

[gandalf holds out his staff]

[he glances from one to the other and back]

[his eyes slowly turn towards the left hand passage]

[he whispers]

gandalf- i have no memory of this place.

[the fellowship rests beneath a peak of rough stone, while Gandalf tries to decide their course, sitting alone at the top]

[aragorn sits beside boromir]

aragorn- hmm.

[the “hobbits" whisper amongst themselves]

katie- are we lost?
elysa- no.
katie- i think we are.
maryann- [doing her make-up] shhh! gandalf’s thinking.

katie- elysa?

elysa- what?
katie- i’m hungry.

[sharon looks down into the cavern and sees a small figure leaping from stone to stone]

[startled, she walks over to where gandalf is sitting]

sharon- there’s something down there!
gandalf- [without surprise] it’s gollum.
sharon- gollum?
gandalf- he’s been following us for three days.

sharon- he escaped the dungeons of barad-dûr!
gandalf- escaped? [turns to sharon] or was set loose? and now the ring had drawn him here. he will never be rid of his need for it. he hates and loves the ring, as he hates and loves himself.

[dark, dirty fingers clasp a stone implement]

[from the distance below, gollum looks up, his large, wet eyes piercing the darkness, observing the company]

gandalf- sméagol's life is a sad story. yes, sméagol he was once called. before the ring found him...before it drove him mad.

sharon- it’s a pity bilbo didn’t kill him when he had the chance!
gandalf- [glancing sharply at sharon] pity? it was pity that stayed bilbo’s hand. many that live deserve death, and some that die deserve life. can you give it to them, sharon?

[sharon looks down, silently]

gandalf- do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. even the very wise can not see all ends. my heart tells me that gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill…

[gollum pulls back into the darkness, wrinkling his nose]

gollum- golllllluum…

gandalf- …before this is over.

[gollum slinks off]

gandalf- the pity of bilbo may rule the fate of many.

[sharon sits down next to gandalf]

sharon- [sorrowfully] i wish the ring had never come to me. i wish none of this had happened.

[the old wizard leans near in a grandfatherly manner]

gandalf- so do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. there are other forces at work in this world,  sharon, besides the will of evil. bilbo was meant to find the ring, in which case you also were meant to have it. and that is an encouraging thought.

gandalf- [looks suddenly towards one of the doorways] oh! it’s that way.
elysa- [getting up] he’s remembered!

[the fellowship starts down a dark stairway]

[gandalf puts on his hat]

gandalf- no, but the air doesn’t smell so foul down here.

[the wizard rests a hand on elysa’s shoulder]

gandalf- if in doubt, elysa, always follow your nose.

[the old wizard leans upon his walking stick, breathing heavily]

[the fellowship comes to a more open space]

[broken ornate columns lie tumbled across the floor]

[gandalf uplifts his staff]

gandalf- let me risk a little more light.

[his staff illuminates a grandiose hall of stone lined with tall pillars and arched ceilings as far as the eye can see]

[the fellowship reacts in awe]

[gimli gasps at the halls of his sires]

gandalf- behold: the great realm and dwarf city of dwarrowdelf.

[the dark halls are edged with silver light from the wizard’s staff, shivering in a light not seen for years to grace their stones]

maryann- now, this is tight ass...this place looks sweet.

SCENE 3

[fellowship walks forward through the hall, peering around a column]

[gimli sees a ray of sunlight shining through a chamber where corpses lay scattered about]

gimli- haugh!
gandalf-
gimli!

[gimli pays no heed to gandalf, but runs into the chamber]

[its walls and recesses are scarred and broken, as are the bodies and weapons scattered about]

[the dwarf stops and kneels by a crypt in the center of the room where a single shaft of light spills down, illumining it]

[gandalf walks forward and peers at the tomb‘s surface]

gimli- no! no! [sob] no! [sob]

[boromir moves forward and places his hand on gimli’s shoulder.

gandalf- [translating the runes on the tomb] "here lies balin, son of fundin, lord of moria." he is dead then. it’s as i feared.

[gimli wails]

[a great sorrow has fallen on the dwarf]

[gandalf gives his staff and hat to katie, bends down, and takes from the grasp of a corpse a large and battered book]

[he opens it and clears the dirt from its pages]

gimli- [chanting softly, sobbing] kilmin malur ni zaram kalil ra narag. kheled-zâram ... balin tazlifi.
legolas- [to aragorn] we must move on, we cannot linger!
gandalf- [reading] "they have taken the bridge…and the second hall.”

[gimli stops sobbing, and looks up blankly]

gandalf- "we have barred the gates…but cannot hold them for long. the ground shakes."

[katie, still holding hat and staff, backs away]

gandalf- "drums...drums…in the deep."

[he looks up slowly, and turns the smudged, bloodstained page]

[the fellowship begins to glance around uncomfortably]

gandalf- "we cannot get out. a shadow moves in the dark."

[katie stumbles back slightly and sees a corpse sitting by a stone well with an arrow in its chest]

[katie turns towards it]

gandalf- "we cannot get out…"

[he glances at the last, single line, a scrawl fading out at the bottom of the page]

[gandalf looks up in the uncomfortable silence]

gandalf-  "they are coming!"

[the silence is broken by katie]

[curious, she reaches out and lightly twists the arrow in the corpse]

[the skull slips off, falling into the well with a resounding crash]

[gandalf whips around, spooked]

[katie turns to face him, looking guilty]

[as she does, the corpse slips into the well, dragging with it a chain and bucket, its noise echoing from hall to hall far below]

[where once was only silence, a ricocheting noise now fills every cranny]

[katie winces at each new wave of noise]

[then, silence]

[the fellowship begins to relax]

[boromir exhales]

gandalf- [slams the book shut] fool! throw yourself in next time and rid us of your stupidity!

[he snatches his hat and staff from the hobbit’s hands]

[gandalf turns away]

[katie stands still, awkwardly]

[boomboom]

[gandalf slowly turns back, and katie turns as well, staring down into the well]

[boom]

[almost as though seen from eyes darting upwards, the caverns below appear from the dark]

[boom-boom]

[boom-boom-boom]

[the beat pauses]

[like a heartbeat, it begins again]

[boom-boom-boom-boom-boom-boom-boom-boom-boom-boom…]

[terror creeps into the faces of the fellowship]

maryann- sharon!

[sharon checks her sword]

[sting glows blue]

legolas- orcs!

[boromir rushes to the doors to have a look]

[arrows hiss into the door near his face]

[aragorn drops his torch and runs to boromir]

aragorn- [to the hobbits] get back! stay close to gandalf!

[they work the doors shut]

[a bellow can be heard just outside]

boromir- they have a cave troll.

[legolas tosses weapons to boromir and aragorn to help blockade the door]

[the fellowship draw out their weapons]

[gandalf throws away his hat and pulls forth his sword]

gandalf- yaggghhh!

[the “hobbits” follow his example and brandish their short-swords]

[sting quivers, glowing blue]

[gimli leaps atop balin's tomb and brandishes his axe]

gimli- aarrgghhh! let them come! there is one dwarf yet in moria who still draws breath!

[pounding outside and many creatures beyond begin breaking the doors down]

[weapons crash through splintering spaces]

[legolas and aragorn stand poised, ready to shoot]

[the “hobbits” are also ready, though fear clouds their eyes]

[the first clear gap is gashed in the door and legolas shoots-a shrill cry rings out]

[the elf notches an arrow to his bow as aragorn shoots another]

[suddenly, the beasts break through and the battle begins]

[a wave of armour-clad orcs charge towards the fellowship, who engage the orcs]

[aragorn and legolas pierce orcs with their arrows while boromir smashes another with his sword]

[gimli catches one in the stomach]

[with a roar, gandalf launches himself into the fray, and the “hobbits” follow]

[aragorn beheads an orc and black blood spews forth]

[maryann pauses in the heat of battle, his attention drawn upwards]

[aragorn also looks up]

[a cave troll smashes through the doorway, chains leading from his wrists to an orc‘s hand]

[legolas shoots the cave troll in the shoulder]

[the beast growls and claps a hand to the wound]

[maryann continues to stare, frozen, as the troll swings his mace down at the “hobbit” — she dives under the troll's legs and crawls away as the troll turns, and sights her again]

[cornered, maryann cringes]

[the beast raises his arm to strike when, suddenly, he falls back]

[aragorn and boromir are behind the troll, pulling on its chains]

[the troll twists its arm and whips boromir across the room]

[he lands in a recess of the wall, dazed]

[an orc stands above him, ready to strike]

[across the room, aragorn slings his blade into the orc’s neck, and, still dazed, boromir gets up]

[aragorn nods to him]

[standing upon the tomb of balin, gimli slings his axe, piercing the troll’s shoulder near legolas’s arrow]

[the troll swings his mace into the tomb, shattering it and knocking the dwarf off]

[elysa and katie push sharon to safety behind a pillar]

[gimli hacks at an orc as the troll swings its mace at him]

[gimli ducks, and the monster strikes an orc instead, and then another]

[gimli falls]

[from a corner among more of the vile goblins, legolas shoots two arrows into the mountain-creature, causing it to reel back with a cry]

[gandalf knocks an orc out with his staff]

[the troll is now swinging his chain in circles above his head]

[he swings at the elf twice, and legolas dodges it]

[again he swings, and his chain whips around a pillar and catches]

[legolas darts towards it and stamps the chain tight, and he runs along it onto the trolls shoulders and shoots it in the back of the head and jumps off]

[the troll cringes, whimpering shrilly in pain]

[it stumbles, snapping itself free from the pillar]

maryann- [hits an orc with her make-up bag] i think i’m getting the hang of this.

[she turns and hits another]

[the troll raises his mace and brings it down at the other “hobbits”, causing them to jump aside]

[sharon is separated from elysa and katie]

[the troll seeks sharon, she hides behind a pillar to avoid the cave troll]

aragorn- [seeing the danger] sharon!

[he tries to fight his way over to the ring-bearer]

[sharon dodges around the pillar, and the troll peers around it]

[not being able to see her, it peers around the other side, causing sharon to dodge out of its vision]

[it disappears back]

[sharon carefully looks around the pillar — the troll is gone]

[she draws a deep breath]

[out of nowhere, the troll blasts around the pillar, bellowing in sharon’s face]

[sharon stumbles and falls back behind the pillar in a corner]

[the troll finds her nevertheless and grabs her]

[the troll lifts and drags sharon off of the edge of a recess]

sharon- aragorn, legolas? SHIT! HELP! this thing has my fucking leg!

[aragorn breathes heavily, exhausted, and he continues on]

aragorn- sharon!

[sharon slashes the troll's hand with sting]

[the troll drops sharon to the ground, twisting his injured hand and staring at it]

[sharon lies on the floor]

[it raises its mace and begins to swing, but aragorn leaps down into the recess]

aragorn- yaaahh!

[he grabs a spear from the floor and stabs the troll with it]

[it does not penetrate its flesh, but holds the beast at bay]

[katie and elysa begin throwing stones at the troll’s head]

[the troll, infuriated, swings his arm down and hits aragorn, sending him flying across the room]

[he collapses onto the floor]

[sharon races after him and tries to rouse him, but aragorn is too stunned to move]

[sharon begins to run but the troll blocks sharon’s path with its spear, throwing her back]

[the troll takes aim and stabs sharon in the chest]

[gandalf turns instinctively]

[elysa and katie stare in shock]

sharon- bye guys!

[sharon falls]

[the cave troll gapes at what it has done in surprise]

[elysa and katie glance at each other and their faces appear resolved]

[they leap onto the beast, stabbing him mercilessly]

elysa and katie- yaaahh!

maryann- [from a distance away] sharon?

[gandalf stares silently across the room, stunned]

maryann- sharon!

[she rushes bravely towards her friend, while kicking some ass]

[broken from their shocked trance, boromir, legolas, and gandalf fight madly to reach the “hobbit”]

[the troll flails at its head and finally grabs elysa, swinging her around and throwing her to the ground

[the fellowship redoubles its efforts against orcs and the troll]

[gandalf and gimli take turns stabbing at the troll and dodging out of range]

[legolas takes aim]

[with katie stabbing the troll one more time in the head, the troll opens its mouth]

[legolas delivers a deathblow, shooting his arrow up into the brain through the mouth of the troll]

[the troll stops fighting and its hand fumbles towards its mouth where the arrow is]

[it stares upward, shocked, and with a long, pained moan, it collapses to the ground]

[katie is thrown against the floor]

[there is a moment of silence]

[all the orcs are dead or have fled]

[gandalf rushes to sharon, as does legolas and aragorn]

[maryann walks slowly over]

aragorn- oh no!

[legolas gets to sharon first, he holds sharon in his arms]

legolas- [elvish speaking] i love you.

[sharon groans, gasping for breath]

maryann- [looking up at the wizard] she’s alive, thank god! [she runs up to sharon] you fuckin’ bitch, you scared me.

[gandalf sighs in relief]

sharon- what did you just say, legolas?
legolas- you understood me?

sharon- yea, i did!

[legolas holds sharon closer]

aragorn- you should be dead! that spear would have skewered a wild boar.
gandalf- [with a twinkle in his eye] i think there’s more to this hobbit than meets the eye.

[sharon reveals her mithril shirt. it glimmers]

gimli- [in awe] mithril! you are full of surprises, miss baggins]

[orcs are once again heard down the hall]

gandalf- [looking weary] to the bridge of khazad-dûm!
legolas- [to sharon] stay behind me.

SCENE 4

[the fellowship runs out the rear door of the chamber into a high, ornate hall of pillars with a ray of light breaking through from some high shaft]

[the fellowship is closely pursued by an army of orcs]

[other orcs spring out from the floor or crawl from the ceiling and down the pillars, like spiders]

[they surround the fellowship, who have drawn their weapons outward in a circle]

[the orcs snarl and leer at the frightened faces]

sharon- [to legolas] i’m getting scared, now.

legolas- don’t worry.

[just then, a fiery light appears at the end of a hall followed by a thunderous rumble]

sharon- ok, then, what is that?!

[the orcs, dismayed, flee, panicking, in all directions]

maryann- i think we should go, let’s do what they’re doing. let’s RUN! we’re the dumbasses...we’re staying!

aragorn- shhh!

maryann- oh come on, it’s the truth!

[gandalf and the fellowship are left alone]

[the old wizard stares down the hall]

boromir- what is this new devilry?

[gandalf does not respond for a moment]

[he closes his eyes, concentrating]

[the rumble is heard again]

elysa- this is no time to fall asleep!

aragorn- shhh!

[gandalf opens his eyes, and they look grim and solemn]

gandalf- a balrog— a demon of the ancient world.

[the thing growls, still hidden around a corner of the vast hall, throwing fiery light on the pillars]

[legolas’s eye show only fear— he clearly knows what the beast is]

gandalf- this foe is beyond any of you. [he turns] Run!

maryann- now, you wanna run! we could’ve left a long time ago! but no...noone fuckin’ listens!

katie- stop...complaining! [grabs maryann and they run]

[the fellowship runs between the rows of pillars and comes to a small doorway in the wall]

[gandalf shepherds them through]

gandalf- quickly!

[he takes a last glance behind him, and follows]

[the fellowship enters a passageway and goes down a flight of steps]

[the flight ends in a missing segment, and boromir nearly falls into fires below but legolas pulls him back]

[his torch whirls away into the vast underworld beneath]

[the “hobbits”  stop short of falling in]

[last of all comes weary gandalf, who leans upon a wall]

aragorn- gandalf!

gandalf- lead them on, aragorn! the bridge is near!

[they look across a wide space to a long bridge spanning the gap between a hall and a cliff face]

[away behind them, the balrog roars again]

[aragorn moves towards gandalf, but gandalf pushes aragorn roughly away from him]

gandalf- do as i say!

[hurt and confusion register on aragorn’s face]

gandalf- swords are no more use here!

[the balrog roars again]

[the fellowship descend a flight of stairs twisting into the fiery depths, rising from the ground far below]

[the fellowship encounters a gap in the stairs]

[sharon stops legolas]

sharon- be careful!

[legolas smiles]

[legolas, then leaps forward and lands on the other side]

[the balrog’s rumbles tear through the fiery light]

[foundations splinter and crumble, sending huge rocks tumbling into the depths]

legolas- [beckoning] gandalf.

[gandalf leaps over to the other side]

[arrows whistle into the air from a far ledge, striking the stone steps at their feet, where gandalf had stood but a moment ago]

[legolas shoots back]

[his arrow rises through the air and pierces the skull of an orc]

[the orc tumbles down from his ledge]

boromir- elysa! katie!

[boromir carries katie and elysa and leaps across the gap]

[a fierce exchange of arrows follow from the stairs to the ledge]

aragorn- maryann.

[he pitches maryann to the other side where the she is caught by boromir]

[aragorn reaches to pick up gimli]

gimli- [holds up his hand] nobody tosses a dwarf.

[he leaps forward but nearly falls back into the chasm]

[legolas grabs his beard]

gimli- not the beard!

[legolas pulls him up to safety]

[some of the stone steps crumble and fall into the abyss]

[aragorn pushes sharon back up the steps and clambers after her, struggling up]

[they climb to their feet and look at the widened gap that separates them from the rest of the fellowship]

aragorn- [laying a hand on sharon’s shoulder] steady. [yelling] hold on!
sharon- [scared] dude, i’m fucking scared out of my mind!
legolas- be careful!

maryann- you’re doing alright!

[the balrog can be heard approaching from the other hall, its the fiery light getting closer]

[stone structures around the mine collapse as it draws near]

[a huge rock falls from the ceiling and smashes through the steps behind aragorn and sharon, creating another gap behind them and weakening the stairs’ foundation]

sharon- this keeps getting better and better!

[the stairs begin to wobble]

[aragorn encourages the sharon, holding fast to her arm]

aragorn- hang on! lean forward!

[they shift their weight forward, tipping the stairs across the divide and slamming them onto the steps where their companions are]

legolas- come on!

[they leap across to safety]

[bormir catches aragorn, and legolas catches sharon]

sharon- [to legolas, fast talking] i was so scared. i thought i wasn’t gunna make it, i would like to say this now. i love you as well!

[legolas shocked, grabs sharon’s hand and runs]

[turning, they run down the stairs as the stone structures collapse behind them, crumbling and falling into the abyss]

[around a great pillar in a fiery hall comes gandalf, leading the fellowship]

[a wall of flame whirls behind them]

gandalf- over the bridge! fly!

[the fellowship flee]

[gandalf does not follow, but turns, looking into the wall of fire]

[a great form of black shadow leaps through the flames, its eyes of white fire, great ash-black horns curling around a bull-like head]

[it opens its maw, rippling heat pouring out with a rumble]

[gandalf turns, running after the fellowship]

[a great, black, cloven foot stomps down into the hall, bursting into flame]

[a narrow bridge of stone appears in the fiery light, and the fellowship crosses the bridge]

[gandalf turns to face the balrog]

gandalf- you cannot pass!

[legolas holds on sharon’s arm]

sharon- [watching from the other side] what are you doing? gandalf!

[great shadows like wings of ash whirl around the demon, which spreads its arms and bursts into cracking, bursting, thundering flame]

[gandalf stands beneath it, staff and sword raised]

gandalf- i am the servant of the secret fire, wielder of the flame of anor…

[he begins to lift his staff]

[a blazing light radiates from it, illuminating the entire bridge, encircling the wizard in a globe of endless light]

gandalf- the dark fire will not avail you, flame of udûn!

[the balrog heaves its arm upward, a sword of fire forming in its hand]

[the balrog strikes down on gandalf, who parries the blow with his blade, shattering the balrog’s sword]

[glowing embers run off the circle of light around the wizard]

[the enraged monster bellows at the wizard]

[sharon gasps]

[aragorn runs forward]

gandalf- [clenching his teeth] go back to the shadow!

[a thread of flame issues from the balrog’s maw, and it steps forward onto the bridge]

[the beats brandishes a flaming whip, lashing it about menacingly]

[gandalf summons the last of his energy, and raises his sword and staff together into the air]

gandalf- YOU...SHALL NOT...PASS!!!

[gandalf drives his staff into the bridge, causing a bright flash of blue light to appear]

[flaring its nostrils, the balrog steps forward onto the bridge]

[the bridge collapses from under it as it moves towards gandalf, and breaks before the wizard’s staff]

[the demon plunges backward into the chasm, still wielding its glowing whip]

[gandalf, exhausted, leans on his staff and watches the balrog fall]

[gandalf turns to follow the others]

[it the last second, the flaming whip lashes up from the depths of the abyss and winds about gandalf’s ankle, dragging him over the edge]

[gandalf clings onto the bridge but strains to keep his grip]

boromir- [to legolas and gimli] bring them outside! i’ll take sharon.

[sharon rushes forward but boromir restrains her]

boromir- no, no!
sharon- gandaaaaalf!

[the wizard grasps vainly at the stone, looking into sharon’s eyes]

[gadnlaf stops struggling]

gandalf- fly, you fools!

[gandalf lets go of the stone and falls into the chasm, spreading his arms, the light of the balrog glimmering far below]

sharon- noooooooooooooooo!!!!

[boromir grabs hold of sharon and starts to leave up a flight of stairs]

boromir- aragorn!
sharon- noooooooooooo!!!

[aragorn is stunned]

[aragorn stares at the distant bridge in disbelief]

[for a moment aragorn does not move, but then orc arrows start whistling by once again, shooting at the companions]

[as aragorn dodges them, he turns and follows the others up the stairs]

SCENE 5

[the fellowship comes streaming out into the stark brightness of the day, contrasting the blackness of moria]

[everyone is distraught]

[maryann sits on the ground, bows her head onto her hands, and begins to weep]

maryann- he was like....so cool!

[elysa consoles katie, who lies crying]

[boromir tries to restrain gimli as he vents out his rage and sorrow]

[legolas wears a look of shock and disbelief, and his eyes seem puzzled, unsure. while sharon is crying in his arms]

sharon- [pulls away] i’m gunna go have a some alone time.

legolas- go on.

[aragorn wipes his sword clean, re-sheathes it, and turns to the others]

aragorn- legolas, get them up.
boromir[pleading] give them a moment, for pity's sake!
aragorn- by nightfall these hills will be swarming with orcs! we must reach the woods of lothlórien. come, boromir, legolas, gimli, get them up.

[walks over to maryann]

aragorn- [he reaches down and lifts maryann up] on your feet maryann.

[aragorn looks around for sharon]

aragorn- sharon? sharon!

[sharon, grieving, stands alone upon the stark hillside]

[weeping silently, she turns towards aragorn, a single tear running down her chin]

sharon- i thought we were going?

[chortling, icy blue water gurgles across the dale]

[aragorn runs up onto a rock]

[he looks past the mountains to the greengold woods beyond]

ACT VII

SCENE 1

[the fellowship jogs across a grassy field, halting under the eaves of a forest of tall and shapely trees: lichen and moss cover them]

[leaves twirl down to the earth]

legolas- [to sharon and maryann] stay behind me.

sharon- ok we will.

[they keep walking]

gimli- [to elysa and katie] stay close, young hobbits! they say that a great sorceress lives in these woods, an elf-witch, of terrible power. all who look upon her, fall under her spell…

[sharon feels something]

lady’s voice- sharon.…

[sharon, startled, looks around]

gimli- ...and are never seen again.

[voice comes again]

lady’s voice- …your coming to us…[sharon halts in her tracks: a pair of eyes flash through her head] …is as the footsteps of doom. you bring great evil here, ring-bearer!

[maryann snaps her out of it]

maryann- yo, chick!

[they keep walking]

gimli- well, here is one dwarf she won't ensnare so easily. i have the eyes of a hawk and the ears of a fox!

[an arrow, notched, appears before his face]

elysa- oh yeah...real quiet!
gimli- oh…

[other bows at the ready appear around the fellowship]

[legolas has his own bow out, pointing it at the owners of the other weapons]

legolas- sharon, are you alright?!

[an elf almost hit sharon in the eye]

sharon- dude, watch where you’re pointing that thing.

[sharon lowers the elf’s arrow near her leg]

sharon- [to legolas, responding] i’m alright!

[the rest of the fellowship looks around, alarmed]

[a tall, golden-haired elf appears]

[maryann taps on sharon’s shoulder]

sharon- yeah.

maryann- doesn’t that guy look cute? [she points at the guy]

sharon- some what. go talk to him.

maryann- we’ve just been ambushed. i don’t think we’re on friendly terms right now.

sharon- ok, whatever you say!

[elysa pulls sharon]

elysa- [pointing at an elf] that guy looks cute!

sharon- go ask his name.

elysa- hell naw!

sharon- ok alright! i’ll do it.

[sharon walk up to the elf]

sharon- [elvish speaking] what is your name if i may ask? [thinking] whoa?! where did i learn that!. nevermind.

elf- my name is, selendrile. welcome to lothlórien

[aragorn walks up to the leader elf]

aragorn- [elvish speaking] haldir of lórien

[the haldir talks]

haldir- the dwarf breathes so loud, we could have shot him in the dark.
gimli- grrr…

SCENE 2

[night is deepening amongst the windy trees]

[the fellowship stands on a platform in the rustling foliage]

[the golden-haired elf greets them]

haldir- [elvish speaking] welcome legolas, son of thranduil.
legolas- [elvish speaking] our fellowship stands in your debt.

[haldir glances at aragorn]

haldir- [elvish speaking] oh, aragorn of the dúnedain, you are known to us.
aragorn- haldir.
gimli- so much for the legendary courtesy of the elves! speak words we can also understand!

maryann, elysa, and katie- yeah!

katie- why don’t you?
haldir- we have not had dealings with the dwarves since the dark days.

[the “hobbits” shut up]

gimli- and you know what this dwarf says to that? ishkhaqwi ai durugnul!

[elysa and sharon are confused]

elysa- [to sharon, laughing]  what did he say?

sharon- i have no clue.

maryann- shhh!

[aragorn turns to gimli]

aragorn- that was not so courteous.

[haldir glances at sharon]

haldir- you bring great evil with you.

[haldir looks at aragorn]

haldir- you can go no further.

[haldir walks away]

[maryann and katie turn to look at sharon. she looks slightly uncomfortable]

[aragorn argues with haldir, angrily]

aragorn- [elvish speaking] we need your protection. the road is fell!

[haldir whispers back inaudibly]

aragorn- [elvish speaking] i wish we may come with you.

[haldir answers quietly, again so that only aragorn can hear his words]

aragorn- [elvish speaking] please, understand, we need your support!

[legolas turns to look at sharon, who looks uncomfortably away]

[sharon’s eyes fall on maryann]

[maryann looks away, a hurt expression in her eyes]

[elysa and katie do likewise]

[gimli glances at sharon]

[aragorn continues to argue loudly with haldir]

[sharon, looking at her friends, sees blame that does not truly exist anywhere but in her mind]

[sharon is alone, it seems]

[aragorn is now pleading]

aragorn- [elvish speaking] the road is very dangerous.

[sharon appears downcast]

[but through all of her worried, her loneliness, a voice of reason speaks]

boromir- gandalf's death was not in vain...nor would he have you give up hope. you carry a heavy burden, sharon...don't carry the weight of the dead.

[elysa walks up to sharon]

elysa- what did he say?

sharon- who?

elysa- the elf guy i like?!

sharon- oh, his name is selendrile.

elysa- i like it!

[sharon ponders this, but looks up suddenly]

[haldir appears, looking less than happy]

haldir- you will follow me.

[a caravan of elves leads the fellowship along a ridge, through the golden woods]

[boromir glances at frodo behind him, as though concerned for the hobbit]

[the group comes to the end of the high ridge and looks out]

[below them, behind the mists, under sunset, a great glade of trees rises above the world, green and gold, rays of light drifting from the branches of trees]

haldir- caras galadhon...the heart of elvendom on earth. realm of the lord celeborn and of galadriel, lady of light.

SCENE 3

[the fellowship arrive at caras galadhon, climbing a winding way among the great trees as the last rays of evening sun stream through their trunks]

[they ascend the path until night falls]

[in the blue glow of a moonlit night, the fellowship climbs a twisting stair about the trunk of a tree, past glimmering lights of silver and blue]

[far above, the silhouetted shapes of the shadowy tree-branches loom]

[passing numerous platforms, they come to a great palace in the trees, lit with silvery lights]

[a curving walkway lies before them, leading up a low stair to an archway]

[three-pronged, golden leaves are scattered about]

[slowly, they gather before the arch as haldir steps to one side, and look up]

[legolas stands behind sharon with his hand on her shoulder]

[with a glow issuing forth from them, a lord and lady, descend to meet the fellowship, hand in hand]

[the fellowship stares in amazement]

maryann- damn, that’s bright! oh well. [takes her sunglasses out and puts them on]

elysa- how does she get so bright? where’s the off switch on her?

katie- [laughs] you’re stupid! there’s no off switch!

[aragorn touches his head reverently in greeting]

[the light dims, and before the fellowship the lord and lady, celeborn and galadriel halt]

[maryann takes her sunglasses off]

[the galadriel’s eyes focus on sharon, but celeborn speaks]

lord celeborn- the enemy knows you have entered here. what hope you had in secrecy is now gone. eight there are here, yet nine there were, set out from rivendell. tell me, where is gandalf?

[as he speaks, lady galadriel’s eyes flicker to aragorn’s, who looks up]

celeborn- for i much desire to speak with him...i can no longer see him from afar.
galadriel- [reading the answer in aragorn’s eyes] gandalf the grey did not pass the borders of this land. [in sorrow] he has fallen into shadow.

[aragorn nods slightly]

[celeborn turns to galadriel]

legolas- he was taken by both shadow and flame. a balrog of morgoth.

[celeborn’s sorrow and surprise is evident]

legolas- for we went needlessly into the net of moria.

[sharon touches legolas’s hand that’s on her shoulder]

[gimli bows his head, sadly]

galadriel- needless were none of the deeds of gandalf in life. we do not yet know his whole purpose. do not let the great emptiness of khazad-dûm fill your heart, gimli, son of glóin.

[the dwarf looks up as her words]

galadriel- for the world has grown full of peril. and in all lands, love is now mingled with grief.

[boromir turns his pained face to the lady, blinking and swallowing hard]

[the lady stares back, starlight glimmering in her eyes]

[boromir looks away, weeping]

celeborn- what now becomes of this fellowship? without gandalf, hope is lost.

[a moment passes]

[aragorn seeks in his head for an answer]

galadriel- the quest stands upon the edge of a knife. stray but a little and it will fail to the ruin of all.

[boromir looks back up at her, unsure]

galadriel- yet hope remains while the company is true.

[galadriel looks at maryann and smiles]

[maryann continues to gaze at her, unlike boromir]

galadriel- do not let your hearts be troubled. go now and rest for you are weary with sorrow and much toil. tonight you will sleep in peace.

[galadriel whispers to sharon in her mind, casting her eyes sideways at her]

galadriel- welcome, sharon of another world…one who has seen the eye!

[galadriel‘s eyes flashed through her mind again]

[later, back on the ground, an area is provided for the fellowship to rest in]

[the “hobbits” are settling down to rest]

[in the trees, the elves’ singing can be heard, and one female voice rising above the others, who sing softly in the background]

[female elf singing in the background]

[other elves singing in the background]

legolas- [pensive] a lament for gandalf.

[aragorn sharpens his sword as gimli sleeps beside him, beneath a lily-shaped lamp glowing in the dark]

elysa- [setting up her bed] what do they say about him?
legolas- i have not the heart to tell you. for me the grief is still too near.

sharon- hey elysa, there’s that elf, selendrile. go over there.

elysa- no!

sharon- ok i’ll go.

[sharon walks to selendrile]

sharon- my friend over there....the one setting her bed...she likes you.

selendrile- the one with the long black hair.

sharon- yup! can you please go talk to her.

selendrile- alright! i’ll be there in a moment.

[sharon walks to legolas]

sharon- hey!

[sharon stands with legolas and holds his hand]

[elves keep singing]

[maryann crouches down to make her bed]

maryann- [to katie] i bet they don't mention his fireworks.

[sharon watches them while she is with legolas]

[after a moment, maryann stands up]

elysa- oh here it comes.
maryann- the finest rockets ever seen, they burst in stars of blue and green…

[gimli snores loudly]

maryann- or after thunder...silver showers…

[aragorn turns, annoyed, and swats the dwarf’s pillow, eliciting a grunt from gimli]

maryann- came falling like a...rain of flowers…

[she pauses for a moment]

maryann-  oh well, i did a good job on that.

[sharon looks around, she spots selendrile]

sharon- elysa! look!

elysa- what?!

[elysa looks]

selendrile- would you like to take a walk with me?

sharon- [lip wording] go! go with him!

elysa- alright!

[elysa and selendrile take a walk]

[aragorn looks out from his resting place beside gimli’s bed]

[he gets up, moving past a small table with silver chalices glinting upon it]

[he walks over to boromir, who is seated alone on a great tree root]

[a fountain gurgles, statues dance in solemn stone, and lights twinkle beyond, invitingly]

[the lament continues by legolas, sharon, and other elves]

aragorn- take some rest. these borders are well protected.
boromir- i will find no rest here. i heard her voice inside my head. she spoke of my father and the fall of gondor. she said to me, "even now, there is hope left." but i cannot see it. it is long since we had any hope.

[aragorn comes and sits beside boromir.]

boromir- my father is a noble man, but his rule is failing. and now our…our people lose faith. he looks to me to make things right and i— i would do it. i would see the glory of gondor restored. [sigh] have you ever seen it aragorn? the white tower of ecthelion, glimmering like a spike of pearl and silver. its banners caught high in the morning breeze. have you ever been called home by the clear ringing of silver trumpets?
aragorn- i have seen the white city, long ago.
boromir- one day, our paths will lead us there. and the tower guard shall take up the call: "the lords of gondor have returned!"

[aragorn smiles slightly, then looks away, in deep thought]

SCENE 4

[the fellowship is asleep]

[shining with soft white light, a figure in a flowing dress walks by them]

[sharon wakes up with a start as though by some invisible sign]

[galadriel is there, gliding past elven statues among the trees, frozen amid their merriment in the dark night; she looks neither to the right or left nor makes any apparent sign]

[sharon proceeds to follow her as though beckoned]

[galadriel descends to her garden in a glade and fills a silver ewer with water from a trickling stream]

[she stands before an ornate stand with a shallow silver basin upon it]

[the lady turns towards to sharon]

galadriel- will you look into the mirror?
sharon- what will I see?

galadriel- [stepping up to the basin] even the wisest cannot tell. for the mirror…shows many things…

[she begins to pour the water into the silver mirror]

galadriel- …things that were…things that are….and some things… [she empties the ewer and steps back] …that have not yet come to pass.

[sharon steps up onto a low platform below the mirror to take a look]

[she peers down and sees nothing but her reflection]

[the mirror clears and shows a vision of legolas, elysa, katie, and maryann from the platform in the woods, recalling his feeling of guilt]

[the vision changes]

[her school appears in the ripples, nice and cheery as it ever had been]

[then fires belch up, flaming from windows and doors. all hell breaks lose]

[sharon gasps, her eyes wide]

[beneath grey skies and dark hills shouldered with machinery and industry, a line of people are driven into a mill to work by slave-masterly of evil]

[then, the eye of sauron fills the mirror]

[the ring hanging from sharon’s neck pulls her closer to the water]

[steam begins to curl up from the basin as sauron speaks to sharon in a dark tongue]

[the ring hangs in the pit of blackness within the fires of the eye]

[terrified, sharon grabs the ring and jerks back, throwing herself off the step and landing on her back on the grass]

galadriel- i know what it is you saw, for it is also in my mind. [her voice echoes in sharon‘s head] it is what will come to pass if you should fail. the fellowship is breaking: it is already begun. he will try to take the ring. you know of whom i speak. one by one, it will destroy them all.
sharon- [silently] i will give you the one ring, if you want it.

[opening her palm, she offers the ring to her]

galadriel-
you offer it to me freely. i do not deny that my heart has greatly desired this.

[she approaches sharon and places her hand over the ring, her hand quivering]

[her image begins to change]

[she towers over sharon, her cloak running ragged in a sudden wind, her eyes like dark hollows, arms flung high]

[she wears a breastplate; her hair billows around her. as though underwater, the glade becomes murky and green]

galadriel- in place of a dark lord, YOU WOULD HAVE A QUEEN! NOT DARK, BUT BEAUTIFUL AND TERRIBLE AS THE DAWN! TREACHEROUS AS THE SEA!

[sharon backs away in fright]

sharon- [thinking] what the hell?!
galadriel- STRONGER THAN THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE EARTH! ALL SHALL LOVE ME, AND DESPAIR!

[the great murky light fades abruptly and galadriel lets her arms slowly fall, the pitilessness of her image disappears]

[breathing heavily, she speaks to a windblown sharon]

galadriel- i pass the test! [with joy] i will diminish, and go into the west, and remain galadriel.

[she begins to turn away]

sharon- [troubled] i can’t do this alone.

[galadriel turns back]

galadriel- you are a ring bearer, sharon. to bear a ring of power is to be alone.

[galadriel lifts her hand up. a ring adorns her finger]

galadriel- this is nenya, the ring of adamant, and i am its keeper. [sharon stares into her eyes] this task was appointed to you, and if you do not find a way, no one will.
sharon- i know what to do. it's just… i'm afraid to do it.

[galadriel bends down to meet her at eye level]

galadriel- even the smallest person can change the course of the future.

SCENE 5

[orthanc rises through plumes of black smoke]

[saruman and an uruk- hai stand in the rising sun in the inner chambers of orthanc]

saruman- do you know how the orcs first came into being? they were elves once, taken by the dark powers. tortured and mutilated…

[the uruk- hai growls]

saruman-…a ruined and terrible form of life. and now...perfected: my fighting uruk-hai. whom do you serve?

lurtz- saruman!

[the uruk-hai are fitted with armor and are given weapons]

[they receive white handprints on their heads and faces, signifying saruman’s army]

[they assemble before him in a great cavern beneath a high balcony]

saruman- [to the troops] hunt them down! do not stop until they are found. you do not know pain, you do not know fear. you will taste man-flesh!

[the uruk-hai raise their weapons, shaking them, with a roar]

[saruman speaks to the lurtz]

saruman- one of the halflings carries something of great value. bring them to me alive and unspoiled. kill the others!

[an uruk-hai troop leaves isengard in a long column]

SCENE 6

[the mists of morning lay heavily along the river]

[bare-branched trees arch through the fogs, stray beams of light falling on the cold, blue waters]

[an elegant ship is out on the river, carved in the likeness of a swan, and galadriel stands silently in it, clothed all in white]

[on shore, cloaks are fastened around the fellowship members with green, silver-veined leaf-brooches]

celeborn- never before have we clad strangers in the garb of our own people. may these cloaks help shield you from unfriendly eyes.

[elves prepare for the departure of the fellowship]

[legolas is among them, shifting parcels into a set of boats provided by the galadhrim]

[he holds up a thin wafer for maryann and katie to see, as they sit in a boat]

legolas- lembas! elvish way-bread. [takes a bite] one small bite is enough to fill the stomach of a grown man.

[legolas walks up onto shore, leaving the “hobbits” by themselves]

maryann-
[turning to katie] how many did you eat?
katie- four.

[katie burps]

[maryann has food stuck in her teeth, so she uses her finger to get it out]

[maryann leaves to go to her boat]

[selendrile and elysa say their goodbyes]

[the swan-ship of galadriel sails by]

celeborn- every league you travel south, the danger will increase. mordor orcs now hold the eastern shore of the anduin.

[as the elf lord speaks, the fellowship climb into the boats]

[maryann tries to steady herself, as though she is unused to boats]

[legolas helps sharon to her boat with help from maryann onboard]

[meanwhile, aragorn and celeborn wander through the heavy mist and sunlight, in deep conversation]

celeborn- nor will you find safety on the western bank. strange creatures bearing the mark of the white hand have been seen on our borders. [he speaks urgently] seldom do orcs journey in the open, under the sun, yet these have done so!

[the two pause, and aragorn looks down.]

[celeborn holds a dagger before him]

[aragorn takes it, and unsheathes it; its blade glints]

celeborn- [elvish speaking with warning] you are being followed.

[aragorn sheathes the dagger]

celeborn- by river you have the chance of outrunning the enemy to the falls of rauros.

[a paddle splashes into the water]

[the fellowship rows through the river, past the elves onshore]

[the sun is reaching its rosy fingers over the hills; caras galadhon rises far away, in the mists]

[as the boats move further downstream, legolas‘s eyes stare distantly with a smile, remembering]

galadriel- my gift for you, legolas, is a bow of the galadhrim, worthy of the skill of our woodland kin.

[the elf stretches the bow, testing]

[galadriel smiles, and turns to elysa and katie]

galadriel- these are the daggers of the noldorin. they have already seen service in war. do not fear, young katie from a different world. you will find your courage.

[the “hobbits” remember the meeting as they sail downriver]

[maryann also recalls the lady‘s gift to her]

galadriel- And for you, maryann. elven rope, made of hithlain.

maryann- thank you, my lady. [she looks sidelong at the blades held by elysa and katie, then looks up hopefully] have you run out of those daggers? damn!

[the lady of the galadhrim smiles, and turns to the next fellowship member in line]

[it is gimli, who diverts his eyes downwards]

[galadriel speaks, her golden hair shining beneath the poignant blues and whites and greens of the forest]

galadriel- and what gift would a dwarf ask of the elves?
gimli- [grunting] nothing. [a change comes over him; he looks up] except to look upon the lady of the galadhrim one last time, for she is more fair than all the jewels beneath the earth.

[galadriel short simple laugh, smiling at the dwarf]

[he turns to walk away, then halts and turns back]

gimli- actually, there was one thing -- ah, agh, that's quite impossible. stupid to ask.

[gimli sits in his boat with legolas, a far away look in his eyes, a faint smile upon his face]

[from another boat, aragorn glances towards them, then away]

[he too is remembering the farewell on the shores of Lothlórien]

[galadriel stands before aragorn and places her hand on arwen‘s evenstar pendant]

galadriel- i have nothing greater to give, than the gift you already bear. [elvish speaking] for her love, i fear the grace of arwen evenstar…will diminish.

[the two share a sorrow in their eyes]

aragorn- [elvish speaking] i would have her leave these shores, and be with her people…i would have her…take the ship to valinor.
galadriel- that choice is yet before her. you have your own choice to make, aragorn…to rise above the height of all your fathers since the days of elendil, [her voice deepens ominously] or to fall into darkness…with all that is left of your kin.

[there is silence for a moment]

[galadriel glances at the pendant, and smiles]

galadriel- [elvish speaking] farewell. there is much you have yet to do.

[she looks into aragorn’s eyes, with both sorrow and joy dancing in her own]

galadriel- [elvish speaking] we shall not meet again, elessar.

[sharon sits in her boat with maryann and aragorn]

[she hears the echo of galadriel’s voice in her mind]

[galadriel hands her a crystalline vessel shaped like a teardrop, filling with a clear water and a shining light]

galadriel- farewell, sharon. i give you the light of earendil, our most beloved star.

[she kisses her on the forehead]

[back in the boat, sharon looks at the glass in her hand, and glances up at the shore]

[the lady stands there, her right arm upraised, her hand adorned with nenya]

[a golden band is upon her forehead and a white cloak is over her head and about her shoulders]

[she speaks to her, silently, as she passes by]

galadriel- may it be a light for you, in dark places, when all other lights go out.

[sharon looks away]

[the fellowship sails out onto the river and leaves lórien behind]

[in the boats, gimli talks to legolas]

gimli- i have taken my worst wound at this parting, having looked my last upon that which is fairest. haugh, henceforth i will call nothing fair unless it be her gift to me.
legolas- what was her gift?
gimli- i asked her for one hair from her golden head. she gave me three.

[legolas smiles and looks at sharon]

[elysa waves bye to selendrile, she gets teary-eyed]

SCENE 7

[the fellowship passes out onto a larger branch of the anduin beneath sheer cliffs]

sharon- [waving to her friends that’s on the other boats] hey guys!

[elysa, katie, and gimli wave back]

[the uruk-hai march along through the forest as the three boats carrying the fellowship float along]

[it is getting dark]

[the fellowship rests on a small island]

[boromir looks out from behind a large rock, silvery webs of lights reverberating from the water]

[he looks worriedly at a log floating in the river, small hands clutch it, and the top of a head is barely visible over the log‘s edge, where eyes glint softly]

aragorn- gollum. he has tracked us since moria.

[the creature whisper]

creature’s voice- golllllluum…

[aragorn getting his things together]

aragorn- i had hoped we would lose him on the river. but he's too clever a waterman.
boromir- and if he alerts the enemy to our whereabouts it will make the crossing even more dangerous.

[sharon hears them. she looks worried]

[legolas waits beside her to fall a sleep]

[maryann cooks food]

maryann- [sitting beside her] have some food, sharon.
sharon- no, maryann,. i’m not hungry.
maryann- you haven’t ate anything all day. you're not sleeping, either. don't think i haven't noticed. sharon.
sharon- i'm all right.

maryann- [to legolas] tell her to eat.

legolas- if she’s not hungry, i won’t force her. but i’ll keep a watch on her until she falls asleep.

maryann- alright. good luck.

[maryann turns to sharon]

[sharon is lying down]

maryann- i know you’re not! i went through the same thing. i promised gandalf that i would.

[sharon pauses a moment]

sharon- legolas, would you excuse us, i want to talk alone with her.

legolas- i’ will come back.

[sharon turns back to maryann]

sharon- you can't help me, maryann... not this time... get some sleep.

[maryann leaves to go get legolas]

[legolas comes back and sits besides sharon lying down]

[in the distance, aragorn and bormir could be heard]

boromir- [walks from the rock to aragorn] minas tirith is the safer road. you know it. from there we can regroup…strike out for mordor from a place of strength.
aragorn- there is no strength in gondor that can avail us.
boromir- you were quick enough to trust the elves. have you so little faith in your own people? yes, there is weakness. there is frailty. but there is courage also, and honor to be found in men. but you will not see that. [aragorn turns away, but boromir grabs his arm and turns him] you are afraid! all your life, you have hidden in the shadows!

[sharon looks out, suffering, from her resting place, hearing boromir‘s words]

sharon- legolas, can you please tell boromir to stop yelling?

legolas- alright, sleep now! i will take care of it.

[legolas leaves, boromir still yelling]

boromir- scared of who you are, of what you are.

[boromir releases aragorn, who turns away]

[legolas comes in]

legolas- please, sharon is trying to sleep. won’t you please stop yelling

[legolas leaves to go back to sharon]

aragorn- [turns back suddenly] i will not lead the ring within a hundred leagues of your city.

[sharon finally sleeps peacefully, and legolas falls asleep too]

[the next morning, the fellowship set out]

[they’re boats pass through a canyon]

[boromir glances at aragorn’s boat across the water]

[aragorn, lifts his head, half-smiles and taps sharon on the shoulder]

aragorn- sharon, the argonath! long have i desired to look upon the kings of old. my kin.

[the fellowship looks up in awe at the towering splendor of the argonath]

[two majestic statues, carved right out of the rock, proudly stand on each side of the anduin]

[two vast quarries line the cliffs to either side of them, where once their stones may have been hewn for their building]

[their left arms are held aloft, their palms facing outwards in gesture of warning]

[solemn and stern are their faces, the silent wardens of a long vanished kingdom]

[the fellowship sail past the statues towards a great, roaring waterfall]

[on either side of the falls, the land rises in two hilltops crowned by distant ruins]

[in the center of the rushing water a pinnacle of rock rises sheer from the cascade]

ACT VIII

SCENE 1

[as they disembark on a gravel beach, boromir looks troubled and appears to be fighting a conflict within him, and sharon glances at him, looking perturbed]

[the fellowship starts to make camp]

sharon- legolas, i’m gunna go walk around

legolas- just don’t go too far.

sharon- i won’t!

[sharon leaves, and boromir follows]

[aragorn gets the stuff out of the boats]

aragorn- we cross the lake at nightfall. hide the boats and continue on foot. we approach mordor from the north.
gimli- oh, yes?! it's just a simple matter of finding our way through emyn muil? an impassable labyrinth of razor sharp rocks! and after that, it gets even better!

[katie looks up, alarmed]

gimli- festering, stinking marshlands, far as the eye can see!
aragorn- that is our road. i suggest you take some rest and recover your strength, master dwarf.
gimli- recover my…?! errrrr…

[legolas walks up to aragorn]

legolas- we should leave now.
aragorn- no. orcs patrol the eastern shore. we must wait for cover of darkness.

[legolas’s gaze wanders over the dark pine woods, with a dark, brooding statue nestled amongst their needles]

legolas- it is not the eastern shore that worries me. a shadow and a threat has been growing in my mind. something draws near...i can feel it!

[gimli getting pissed off]

gimli- no dwarf need recover strength! [to katie] pay no heed to that, young one.

[elysa, returning with some wood for the campfire, looks around]

elysa- where's sharon?

[maryann, who was half-dozing, rouses with a start]

[aragorn looks over the camp]

[aragorn’s gaze stops on boromir’s shield, lying with his belongings]

SCENE 2

[sharon wanders into the forest]

[she stands by an immense stone head, long aged and lost from its body, lying with its side in the ground]

[boromir, “gathering wood”, sees sharon and approaches her across the leaf-littered earth]

boromir- none of us should wander alone, you least of all. so much depends on you. sharon? i know why you seek solitude. you suffer; i see it day by day. you sure you do not suffer needlessly? there are other ways, sharon, other paths that we might take.

sharon- i know what you would say. there’s something wrong with you, i’m warning you.
boromir- warning? against what? we're all afraid, sharon. but to let that fear drive us to destroy what hope we have…don’t you see, that is madness?
sharon- there is no way!
boromir- i ask only for the strength to defend my people! [throws the gathered wood to the ground] if you would but lend me the ring…
sharon- no.

[sharon steps back]

boromir- why do you recoil? i am no thief.
sharon- sure you are?!
boromir: what chance do you think you have?

sharon- better chance than you!

boromir- they will find you! they will take the ring and you will beg for death before the end!

[sharon begins to walk away from boromir]

boromir- you fool!

sharon- well, you’re a dumbass!

[boromir starts walking after her]

[they begin to run, boromir closing in on sharon]

sharon- shit! get away from me!
boromir- it is not yours, save by unhappy chance. it could have been mine! [tackles sharon] it should be mine! give it to me!

sharon- fuck it! get off of me.

[the two struggle, sharon wrestles the ring into her hand, clutching it]

boromir- give it to me!
sharon- no!

[sharon punches boromir]

[boromir tackles sharon again]

boromir- give me… give me the ring!
sharon- hell no! i’m not giving it to you!

[sharon slips the ring on and disappears]

[while she’s invisible, she kicks boromir and runs away]

boromir- [looks around desperately] i see your mind. you will take the ring to sauron! you will betray us! you’ll go to your death and the death of us all! curse you! curse you! and all of your friends!

[boromir slips and falls to the ground]

[the madness of the ring leaves him and he comes to his senses]

boromir- sharon?...sharon?...what have i done?...please...sharon!

[sharon dashes up a set of dark steps, the world of the ring blurring away around her]

boromir- [from far away] sharon, i'm sorry! sharon!

[sharon, in the "shadow world," climbs up onto a seat of stone framed by two stone eagles]

[a great shape looms before her from afar, the image rushes towards her and her vision rise to a pinnacle— the dark tower of barad-dûr, where the burning eye of sauron stares back menacingly]

[sharon, rushing to remove the ring, falls off of the seat and lands on her back]

[she sits up, trying to catch her breath]

[someone’s foot approaches to sharon]

SCENE 3

aragorn- sharon?
sharon- [startled] huh?! it has taken boromir.
aragorn- [intensely] where is the ring?
sharon- stay away!

[scrambles up and retreats from aragorn]

[aragorn comes after her]

aragorn- sharon?

[sharon stops]

aragorn- i swore to protect you!
sharon- can you protect me from yourself?!

[she holds the ring upon her palm]

sharon- would you destroy it?

[aragorn, looking at the ring, slowly approaches sharon]

[the ring begins to whisper]

the ring- aragorn...aragorn…elessar…

[he reaches out, towards the ring}

[with both hands, aragorn closes sharon’s hand over the ring and pushes it to her chest, refusing the temptation]

aragorn- i would have gone with you to the end, into the very fires of mordor.
sharon- i know. look after the others, especially maryann. please!

[aragorn nods but then sees sting’s blue glow. he stands suddenly]

aragorn- go, sharon. [drawing out his sword] run. run!

[sharon runs from the hilltop]

[aragorn walks out from beneath the ruin and finds a troop of uruk-hai advancing towards him]

[aragorn gives a half-smile, and half-swaggers towards them, touching his sword to his forehead in a gesture of acceptance to the challenge]

[they attack]

[aragorn cuts several down, but they force him up the stairs of the seat]

[maryann is searching frantically for sharon in the woods]

maryann- sharon!

[she hears the clash of sword on sword. her eyes widen. battle!>

[aragorn still fighting the uruk-hai]

lurtz- [to his troops] find the halfling! yaggh! find the halfling!
aragorn- [jumping onto the uruk-hai massing below him] elendil!

[legolas and gimli run forward from behind the ruin]

[legolas shoots several uruk-hai with quick bow-work; gimli lands blow after blow with his axe]

legolas- aragorn! go!

SCENE 4

[sharon  runs and hides behind a tree]

[across the way, elysa and katie hide in a space under some fallen tree trunks]

elysa- sharon!
katie- [beckoning] hide here! quick! come on!

[sharon looks at them, anguished, then shakes her head]

katie- [to elysa] what’s she doin’?
elysa- [in realization] she’s leavin’.
katie- no!

[runs out towards sharon]

elysa- katie!!

[elysa goes after katie]

[elysa and katie are out in the open]

[several uruk-hai are coming down the hill, towards them]

elysa- run, sharon, hurry!

[elysa cups her hands and calls out to the uruk-hai]

elysa- hey! hey you! over here!
katie- hey!
elysa- over here!
katie- [waving her arms] come this way.

[both run away from sharon]

[the uruk-hai troop follow them]

[sharon makes a break for it, running in the opposite direction]

katie- its working!
elysa- no shit! i know it is, run!

[back at the hilltop, legolas, aragorn, and gimli continue to fight the Uruk-Hai]

[in one smooth move, legolas stabs one uruk with an arrow then shoots it out at another]

[gimli wields his axe]

[aragorn stabs one behind his back and kicks it to the curb]

[elysa and katie run across an old stone bridge]

[at its far end, they stop and see uruk-hai running towards them]

[the uruks are closing in, both in front and behind]

[an uruk runs up to them, raising his battleaxe]

[but boromir comes charging in, knocks the uruk back, and kills him with his own axe]

[he throws a knife at another. more close in]

SCENE 5

[legolas kills orc after orc]

[legolas shoots down an uruk who has closed in on aragorn]

[three loud ox-horn blasts are heard]

legolas- the horn of gondor!
aragorn- boromir!

[aragorn runs down the slope towards the sound, but uruks are between him and boromir]

[boromir sounds the horn again]

[the uruks attack boromir]

[aragorn battles madly towards boromir]

[boromir kills two more]

[elysa and katie take out some orcs]

boromir- [to the “hobbits”] run! run!

[lurtz walks into view on the misty hilltop beneath the dark trees]

[boromir fights on, oblivious]

[elysa and katie continue to throw rocks]

[lurtz aims his black-fletched bow at the battling warrior]

[he shoots, he scores]

[boromir jerks backwards at the blow to his left shoulder]

[elysa stops in mid-throw as boromir falls before a solemn statue as the sunlight streams by]

[they look at him in shock]

[boromir begins to breathe hard]

[uruks come closer, and boromir gives a battle cry, rises, and swings his sword at one, who falls]

[lurtz growls and walks further down the slope]

[he lifts his bow, and shoots again, as boromir turns to look at him]

[a black arrow flies into boromir’s stomach]

[he drops to his knees again, gasping]

[elysa and katie still stand in shock, rocks in hand]

[boromir stares into their eyes, but against death, they can do nothing]

[summoning his will to fight for them, the warrior swings his sword at another uruk and gets back up]

[lurtz shoots him one more time, in the chest]

[boromir falls on his knees and stays there, swaying a little and blinking]

[the ox-horn is cloven in two]

[elysa and katie look at him, with all the courage they can muster, they took up their swords and attack the uruk-hai]

[they never have the chance to strike]

elysa- damn, we suck!

[katie screams]

[the uruk-hai lift them up and carry them off]

[elysa and katie wave their arms frantically]

[the uruk-hai troop walks away from boromir]

[boromir looks on helplessly]

[the troop passes by boromir where he kneels, suffering, as though he does not exist]

SCENE 6

[maryann still looking for sharon]

[legolas runs to boromir, but he bumps into something]

[he looks down]

legolas- sharon!

sharon- whatever you do, don’t stop me.

legolas- why? where are you going?

sharon- you know where i’m going.

legolas- no, you just can’t go.

sharon- you know that i must do it!

[legolas turns around]

legolas- yes i know! so, this is means this is a farewell.

[sharon runs up behind legolas and hugs him]

sharon- don’t you dare say that. [elvish speaking] i love you, and that will not change.

[legolas turns around and hugs sharon]

[then they kiss]

[sharon pulls away]

sharon- i have to go now!

legolas- well, i will see you soon. i hope!

sharon- and i hope as well.

[sharon leaves]

[legolas hears the horn]

legolas- boromir!

[legolas runs to help]

[legolas bumps into gimli]

gimli- watch it!

legolas- let’s go!

[gimli and legolas head towards boromir]

SCENE 7

[lurtz, now left alone, stops before his foe]

[boromir swallows and stares back at him]

[the chieftain snarls and pulls his bow back, ready to deliver the final blow]

[just then, aragorn crashes into him, and his arrow flies off harmlessly]

[lurtz and aragorn battle it out]

[aragorn loses his sword and is thrown to the ground; when he gets up, lurtz throws his two-prong shield at aragorn and pins him by the neck against a tree]

[lurtz raises his sword and strikes, but aragorn slips beneath the shield and dodges the blow]

[aragorn pulls out a knife and stabs lurtz on the leg]

[he roars and pulls out the knife, licking the blood from it, and throws it at aragorn, who has found his sword and uses it to bat the knife away]

[aragorn closes in on lurtz and in a flurry of swordplay, slices his arm off and then stabs him in the chest]

[the resilient lurtz pulls himself up on the sword, closer to aragorn, snarling, defiant]

[aragorn grimaces, pulls his sword out of the injured warrior, swings it wide, and whacks off the lurtz's head]

[the rest of him falls to the ground]

[aragorn pauses a moment, panting]

[he then races to boromir]

aragorn- no!

[boromir, pale and bloodied, is now lying on his back, his head close to a tree]

[aragorn kneels near boromir, who grabs aragorn's shoulder]

boromir- they took the little ones.
aragorn- be still.
boromir- sharon! where is sharon?
aragorn- I let sharon go.
boromir- then you did what i could not. i tried to take the ring from her.
aragorn- the ring is beyond our reach now.
boromir- forgive me. i did not see it. i have failed you all.
aragorn- no, boromir, you fought bravely! you have kept your honor.

[he reaches out to pull the arrows from boromir]

boromir- leave it! it is over. the world of men will fall, and all will come to darkness… and my city to ruin.
aragorn- i do not know what strength is in my blood, but i swear to you i will not let the white city fall…nor our people fail!
boromir- our people? our people.

[boromir reaches for his sword]

[aragorn places the hilt in his hand, and helps boromir clasp it to his chest]

boromir- i would have followed you my brother…my captain…my king!

[boromir dies]

[aragorn touches his hand to his forehead, then to his lips in respect]

aragorn- be at peace, son of gondor.

[bends and kisses boromir on his forehead]

[legolas and gimli finally arrive]

[legolas looks sadly at aragorn and boromir]

[gimli bows his head and turns away]

[aragorn stands up]

[boromir lies among the earth: pale and gone, the black arrows sticking from his broken body]

[the fallen warrior has gone to his last home]

aragorn- they will look for his coming from the white tower. but he will not return.

[he lifts his head and the sunlight plays like the glimmer of water across his features]

[a tear glints, falling down his cheek]

[his eyes seem to stare distantly]

[for a moment, it seems as though he has the dignity of a king]

SCENE 8

[sharon stands upon the pale grey shore, staring into the distance, with the ring on her palm, seemingly merely an unadorned gold band]

[maryann runs through the woods]

maryann- sharon!

[weeping silently, sharon hears her voice speaking from her conversation with gandalf in moria]

sharon- i wish the ring had never come to me. i wish none of this had happened.

[she hears a voice rise in answer, to her surprise. standing in the orange light of evening, gandalf the grey speaks to the troubled “hobbit” in a vision]

gandalf- so do all who live to see such times but that is not for them to decide. all you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you.

[determined to proceed with the quest alone, sharon closes her hand over the ring, and puts it into her pants back  pocket. she pushes a boat into the river and jumps in]

[just then, maryann emerges from the woods]

[maryann sees sharon paddling away and runs after her]

maryann- sharon, no! sha! get your fuckin’ ass back here!!
sharon- [quietly] no, maryann.

[sharon continues to paddle away]

[maryann runs into the river after sharon]

[sharon, hearing the splashes, she looks back]

sharon- go back, maryann! i’m going to mordor alone.
maryann- i know you are, that’s why i’m coming with you!
sharon- there’s creatures in the river!

[maryann swim, but something touches her, she loses her concentration, then she sinks into the water]

sharon- maryann!!!

[maryann sinks deeper and deeper]

[she sees the sun shimmering up on the surface]

[her arm floats limply as she descends into the water]

[sharon’s hand reaches down and grabs maryann’s wrist]

[maryann tightens her hand around sharon’s]

[sharon pulls her out of the water and up into the boat and maryann tumbles in]

maryann- [dripping wet] i made a promise, “i will so not leave you alone, you’re my sister and my best friend. i’m not leaving.”
sharon- alright, let’s go!

[sharon and maryann paddle towards the eastern shore]

SCENE 9

[boromir is laid to rest in one of the boats]

[his sword rests with him, his shield is above his head and his cloven horn at his side]

[the boat slips over the falls of rauros and then drops into the mists below]

[aragorn wears boromir’s vambraces in his honor]

[gimli shoves the third boat into the water]

gimli- hurry! sharon and maryann have reached the eastern shore.

[aragorn stand still and says nothing]

gimli- is there something i don’t know about?

[gimli looks at legolas]

legolas- don’t follow them. [he looks at sharon on the other side of the river] sharon’s fate is no longer in our hands.

gimli- then it has all been in vain! the fellowship has failed.
aragorn- [putting his hands on their shoulders] not if we hold true to each other. we will not abandon elysa and katie to torment and death. not while we have strength left. leave all that can be spared behind. we travel light. let us hunt some orc!

[legolas and gimli look at each other, grinning]

gimli- yes!!! haha!

[aragorn runs into the woods, followed by gimli and legolas]

ACT IX

SCENE 1

[sharon and maryann stand upon a high hill beside a reflecting pool of water]

[a dark sky is before them, though light wings beneath it]

sharon- mordor. i hope the others are  okay.
maryann- that aragorn dude will look after them.
sharon- do you think we’ll ever see them again.
maryann- we have to, you know that!
sharon- [turns, smiling] maryann, i think we’re gunna get lost.

maryann- i know!

sharon- oh well! we’ll just wing it, okay! it’s that way. [pointing at the mountain burning up]

maryann- let’s go!

[sharon walks onwards]

[maryann stands for a moment, and then follows]

[they go down the rocky slope into a light mist beneath high, sunlit mountains, towards their destination]

[they have a long way to go, and a lonely road]

[too bad it ain’t home]
