WETA:
WETA is the collective term for two separate
companies that worked on the Lord of the Rings trilogy. These
two companies were responsible for the two different Special Effects Aspects
of the film, Digital (WETA Digital Ltd) and Special (WETA Workshop Ltd)
Effects.
These spare a collective website, which can
be accessed using the hyperlink below:
WETA Digital Ltd:
The engineers at Weta Digital were
responsible for all of the digital effects necessary on the films.
The task they were set was huge, the amount of time and effort it
took was immense and (in my opinion) they did a fantastic job.
WETA Digital was founded in 1993 by
a group of New Zealand filmmakers including Richard Taylor and Peter
Jackson. It started with a single, hired(!) computer used to do
the effects for Peter Jackson's fourth movie, Heavenly Creatures.
Since these rather humble beginnings, the company
has grown, and now has film credits which include;
- Napoleon
- Jack Brown Genius
- Forgotten Silver
- The Frighteners
- Contact
- ... and not to forget ...

WETA Workshop Ltd:
Weta Workshop was responsible largely
for much of the Special, but not Digital, Effects for the film adaptations.
They have been working on the project for 4 years, and had to supervise
at the height of filming, 7 shooting units and 2 miniatures units.
In the duration of creating the film,
they manufactured over 1200 suits of armour, 2000 weapons, 68 miniatures,
12 major creatures, all of the special make up effects and prosthetic
suits for the films and multitudes of gore and injury rigs.
Much of the armour and weapons were
created using traditional methods so as to create realistic and
accurate results.
