Wargaming:

Wargaming is a chance to fight battles, and produce conclusions in miniature. It gives the player the chance to take command of models, and then fight an 'enemy'. These battles could represent just a skirmish, all the way up to a huge a gigantic clash of armies - it's all up to you!

Games Workshop:

The company granted the rights to produce the strategy battle game based on the Lord of the Rings film trilogy was a British company called Games Workshop. Forerunners in tabletop strategy wargaming, they developed a new structure of rules; and many hundreds of high quality miniatures for the new game.

They decided to base games on each of the three films, all based upon one standard format. There were a number of reasons for this; one was that they were not permitted to release models based upon characters that filmgoers had yet to be introduced to, and also how to represent certain characters such as Gandalf, who 'evolves' during the course of the trilogy.

The Fellowship of the Ring Strategy Game:

This introduces the structure, and decides those characters involved during the film. For example, Gandalf the Grey.

The Two Towers Strategy Game:

This further refines rules, such as dealing with those for sieges, fighting inside buildings (both of which did not feature within FOTR.) In addition, it includes rules for Gandalf the White, INSTEAD of those for Gandalf the Grey.

Return of the King Strategy Game:

This version has yet to be released, but will further evolve the characters (such as allowing Pippin to be armed as a warrior of Gondor) and refine the overall rules (such as possibly! involving ship-to-ship fighting with regard to the Corsairs of Umbar.)

Shadow and Flame Gaming Supplement:

This is an extension to the events depicted in the film, by going back and looking at the version of events in the original books. This allows the player to take command of different forces, in different situations, for example, fight as the heroic Balin in an attempt to retake Khazad-dum, field Glorfindel in your Elven Army, and attempt to rewrite the course of history!

All of these can be mixed, so for example, you be replay the siege of Minas Tirith where Elrond leads a contingent of High Elves, including Glorfindel, Elladan and Elrohir to their aid.
