Sauron:

Sauron, the Lord of the Rings of Power, is driven by an over-whelming desire to dominate the entire of Middle Earth, and a hatred for all who stand in his way.

Little is known about his beginnings, other than he came to Middle Earth with Morgoth, a fallen Valar dedicated to evil.

In ancient times before he had revealed his true nature, he formed an alliance with the Elves of Eregion. He allied himself with Celebrimbor, the greatest of the surviving craftsmen, and together, they learned much. They began to forge the Rings of Power, which Sauron gifted to the different races. He aided the Elven-smiths in their task, but wrought in secret the One Ring, to rule over all of the lesser rings. The Elves realised his true intent too late; Eregion was overrun by his minions, and Celebrimbor slain.

However, the One Ring could not dominate the three gifted to the Elves. Sauron had not had a hand in making them, and so the Elves resisted from many long years.

His vast armies were about to subdue all of Middle-Earth, but the combined armies of the Last Alliance defeated Sauron's hordes. Elves, under their king, Gil-Galad, and Men of Gondor, under their king Elendil, fought together side by side. They finally laid siege to his fortress of Barad-dûr, and there he was finally beaten.

Sauron Vanquished The One Ring was taken from him, and he was finally vanquished. But he was not destroyed - he had put too much of himself into his ring. As long as the One Ring remained, his spirit endured.
