Orcs:

Orcs are an evil race, who are in the command of Sauron. They were bred by an evil demigod, in mockery of Elves who had been captured and tortured by Sauron. Like the Elves, Orcs are very fierce warriors, and do not die of natural causes.

Orcs differ in appearance from tribe to tribe, although in general, in the words of Tolkien, they are short, squat and bowlegged, with long arms, dark faces, squinty eyes and long fangs. As they live in the darkness of the world, all prefer the darkness and most Orcs are weakened by the Sun.

The Orcs are skilled in practical tasks such as tunnelling, making armour and weapons. Their entire appearance is coarse, and practical. Their medicines are harsh, but effective. They hate all things of beauty, and love to kill and destroy.

They also prefer to eat Meats, especially ‘Manflesh’, although now predominately, most of the armies of Mordor are fed on Orc Meat.

Orcs are split in many different tribes, all of which hate each other. However, they will always unite to fight the enemies of Sauron, the Free People of Middle-Earth. In the absence of others, they will often turn to fighting among themselves.

Uruk-hai:

At the bidding of his master Sauron, Saruman the White turned his vast knowledge of sorcery to breed an army of Orcs. By crossing Orcs and Men, Saruman created a special breed of Orc, the Uruk-hai.

Ordinary Orcs are crook-limbed and timid, whereas Saruman's Uruk-hai are fearless, muscular warriors of skill and courage. They are much more intelligent that other breeds of Orc, and so will fight differently to other Orc tribes.

Lurtz:

Lurtz Lurtz is a character created entirely for Peter Jackson's film adaptation.

Lurtz proved to be the strongest and most ruthless of all the first birthing of Uruk-hai, illustrating his savagery by throttling one of his Orc keepers.

Saruman appoints him as leader on the Uruk-hai's first mission; to capture the Hobbits and kill the remainder of the Fellowship. As such, it is he who kills Boromir, but in doing so, he is drawn into combat with Aragorn.
