Middle Earth is a vast area of land,
with varied scenery. From the rolling hillsides of the The Shire,
to the vast ominous Misty Mountains, to the empty desert plains
of Haradwaith, a traveller will notice much difference. As they
travel south, they will find it grows hotter...
Peter Jackson, the director of the
most recent film adaptation, used New Zealand to do much of his
filming. The varied landscape of Middle Earth was brilliantly matched
by the vast array of unspoilt landscape that could be found in New
Zealand. Also, it just so happens that Peter is a New Zealander!
The link below describes the scenery
involved with the most important regions of Middle Earth, namely
those visited in the Lord of the Rings:
This second link gives
brief details about where each location featured in the recent film
adaptation of the trilogy was filmed. In addition to these sites,
Studios in both New Zealand and America where used from scenes apparently
outside, with the footage mapped onto exterior shots.
