The Making Of...
HOME
I had been asked to design a Mina Harker inspired gothic dress for an authentic vampire costume based on the gothic red gown Winona Ryder wears in Bram Stoker's Dracula.  Now that I had a design and a good idea of what fabrics and patterns to use and how to modify parts etc I was ready to get started.

Patterns
The pattern that Charlotte and I decided to use for her dress is from the evening collection from McCalls; No. 3676.  It consists of a simple bodice and skirt pattern made from lots of seperate panels making it easy for me to insert a different coloured fabric panel into the dress to break up the black we were using which is what Charlotte wanted. The main features of the dress that Charlotte liked were the bodice and rather large skirts and so we felt this was a very good pattern to work with although moderations would have to be made to get it exactly how I had designed it.

I would also have to use the McCall's pattern 3010 for the sleeves which I had integrated into my dress design as this is what Charlotte prefered.  This meant I would have to alter the bodice part of the dress to modify it for sleeves and instead of having one skirt, Charlotte wanted two; an underskirt and an overskirt, so that you could see the silver panel underneath the black overskirt and to add more layers so the skirt would go out a little more to get the more gothic style.
