Captain Jack Sparrow

My friend Sophie has always had a love of Johnny Depp, but ever since the release of POTC at the cinema she has had almost an obsession with his character Captain Jack Sparrow.  Like most people she found him amazing as well as funny and when the opportunity came to dress up as him she jumped at the chance.

Of course she wasn't going to go to the extreme of dressing exactly like him (well maybe she would have) but she decided to be a female version, basically without the facial hair.

As you can see from this photo on the right his costume appears complicated but is actually just made up from simple layers.

Sophie already had the pirate boots, all she needed was the costume which is where I came in.  I designed a more feminine version of Jack's costume and then did my best to find a decent pattern which had all the features needed to make the perfect pirate costume.  The only pattern I could find which has everything we needed was McCalls 2258.

Sophie decided that she did not want the jacket but just the waistcoat and shirt for the top layers and then of course the trousers.  The other accessories would be easy to make or get hold of in one way or another.  As it is mine and Sophie's joint birthday party we decided to both go as pirates with me as Morgan Adam's which is why there was more to consider when searching for a suitable pattern.

For there to be some difference between our costumes it was decided I should have the jacket and a larger hat than Sophie, much as Morgan Adams from Cutthroat Island does.

Of course the Jack Sparrow costume wouldn't be complete without the hat! Luckily the pattern I bought included a pattern for a hat much like Jack's.  All I had to do was make it from another material and modify the pattern a little to make it a bit bigger.

The boots that Sophie had were black though, which didn't actually look too bad, but it wasn't Jack enough for her so I made her some boot covers from some spare brown leather I had left from making my Shieldmaiden corset.  This is also what I used to make the hat out of.

All we needed to do now was to make a more feminised version of the actual costume and make or buy the accessories alike.

What actually ended up happening was a dramatic feminisation of this costume when the idea arose to become kinky female pirates after the pattern I had chosen for our

costumes provided a problem to modify to fit my friend and I (it was a men's pattern after all).  Instead we kept the main elements of Jack's costume; the hat, bandana and waistcoat and made them more fitted and well...kinky looklng.  After all for our pirate weapons Sophie opted for a whip and I opted for a riding crop. ; )

Not only was this change in our costuming plan more convienient to the time we had left to create these costumes but also the budget we had after having to fork out quite a large amount of money for the party to take place...(the time that we had left was shirt due to the making of one very large skirted Mina Harker dress for the other third of our joint party, Charlotte.)
