The One Ring
The quote even the smallest person can change the course of the future foretells the outcome of The Lord of the Rings and is one of the many messages of the story. But it can also apply to the One Ring. As Boromir points out in the film: -

It is a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing, such a little thing.

The Ring is small but within it there is such power that can turn the tides of Middle Earth. Only by destroying the trinket can Middle Earth be saved. And as Boromir outlines in that scene it shows the audience how truly absurd it is for a little ring to hold that much power.
Although absurd it is perfect, as no one would expect it such as no one would expect one man to rise to power and hold enough power to kill thousands of people. In a way it is a symbol of what has happened in the past in our own world and what potential one thing has if given power for the wrong reasons.
