| Ideas for Middle Earth came to Tolkien while he served in the trenches during World War One. Some of the
first stories were written down in a notebook when he was not fighting. It took a year for the whole of Hobbiton to grow completely. Weeds, flowers vegetables and all. The first scene to be shot was where the hobbits were hiding off the road from the Ringwraith. It took about 18 months to film the trilogy and they were filmed back to back. While filming, some of the cast were unlucky enough to get hurt. Sean Astin (Sam) stood on a peice of glass while running after Elijah Wood (Frodo) at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring, which went through his hobbit foot and into his real foot (and after watching that part in the DVD and looking carefully looks like it went RIGHT through!). He was airlifted to hospital and 24 hours later with 20 stiches he was back filming. Ouch! Sean we feel for you. John Howe and Alan Lee, the conceptual artists for the trilogy produced illustrations for the books. John Rhys-Davis originally auditioned for the part of Denethor (the father of Boromir who appears in The Two Towers) Rumour was that David Bowie was considered for the part of Elrond. That wed love to have seen. Supervising Art Director, Dan Hennah, said hed be perfectly happy to live the rest of his life in a hobbit hole. Peter Jackson always wanted Lord of the Rings to be made into a film and when nobody did he took it upon himself to do it instead. And were grateful for that! All the hobbits had scale doubles that were around 4ft tall, which would play the actors in long shot and other technical terms for filming which we cant remember. Elijah Wood (Frodo) has The One Ring. First it was said that he kept it in his managers office but now after reading interviews it looks like Elijah now has it himself at his house. Either way the lucky guy. We wantsssss it! The cast had to learn how to speak Elvish, horseback ride, sword fight, archery, the whole nine yards!Often over 200 people were dressed in head to toes prosthetics. Once those hobbit feet were used they were put in the shredder. *Sniff* The inspiration for the hobbit hole design was John Howes painting of the interior of Bag End. Lord of the Rings was filmed in Peter Jacksons homeland of New Zealand. |
