Biography: Cate Blanchett was born in Australia, the daughter of an Aussie mother and a Texan father. She, her older brother and two younger sisters were raised by their mother after their father died when Cate was ten. She began studies of fine arts and economics at the University of Melbourne but evetually enrolled at Australia's prestigious National Institute of Dramatic Art. After graduating, she joined the Sydney Theatre Company, starring in several productions. In 1995, she was nominated for Best Female Performance for her role as Ophelia in the Belvoir Street Theatre Company's production of "Hamlet". She has also co-starred in ABC (Australian Broadcasting Company) Televsion's "Heartland", "Bordertown", and "Police Rescue" Cate's played Lucinda in the critically acclaimed, Oscar and Lucinda, but it was her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in Elizabeth that shot her popular and critical stardom. Cate recieved the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Dramatic Motion Picture for Elizabeth, and was designated Best Actress for her performance by: The Broadcast Film Critics Association, The Chicago Film Critics Association, The London Critics Circle, The Golden Satellite Awards, The Toronto Film Critics Association, The Online Film Critics Society, and ultimately she received an Academy Award nomination as Best Actress. She also was nominated for the 1999 MTV Movie Awards as Best Breakthrough Female Performer. In 1999 she played a small role in The Talented Mr. Ripley which stars Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow.
