Today; when sun and sea were one
and we ran laughing on the shore,
the universe conspired and brought
a pod of dolphins and we, caught
in heedless wonder, stood and stared
and marvelled at their being there.
For a space then, time stood still
The dolphins danced and on their way,
and we, forgetful of ourselves
joined the dolphins at their play,
watched a merman filing gold,
dove careless through the lilting spray.
But when the waves began to call
and dophins joined in stately dancing;
all the stars went circling on. And we,
returning to ourselves, found day was gone.
some stopped, and curious from their play,
they looked at us with dark sea eyes.
Then chuckling through the joyous surf,
they turn and plunge some miles deep.
And we? We stand ashore and weep.
