Online tutorial using Centra
Cool! That's my experience using the software Centra to conduct a tutorial on descriptive statistics. For the past two days, 4 classes went through the tutorials with me, where they had to present their recommendations for a new stock portfolio based on the mean and standard deviations they calculated. Before that, they were supposed to go through a statistics "lecture package" to learn how to set up frequency distribution tables, and calculate the mean and standard deviations for both ungrouped and grouped data. Of course, students being students, some of them didn't go through it beforehand and therefore they weren't able to solve the problem. Luckily, for most of the classes, there were some groups who did finish and overall, they had fun presenting online. Presentation skills still have much to be improved for many groups but they got the gist of what I'm trying to teach through going through the process itself. Some even showed creativity by trying out different frequency distribution tables; different strategies to sell and buy the stocks etc. There are problems with the online tutorial. An example is connection. Some of the students couldn't get connected or their connection failed in the middle of the tutorial. Also some didn't have mic or had problems with their mic. Yet, we managed to overcome that using the text chat software. But the coolest thing is that all of us were in different places. Some of them were at home, others were outside and I was in school. So the fact that we were able to use the technology to get together for lesson itself is a novelty. Anyway, this is a first trial for me. Maybe next, I will explore other softwares; virtual realities to perhaps conduct lectures. Peace, Sid 2007-05-24 08:57:16 GMT
