New 'Lord of the Dance' Reigns
By: Kendra Meinert

Michael who? From the first moment John Carey slammed his feet against the floor Thursday night at the Brown County Arena, the Spirit of Performances Past--one Mr. Michael Flatley--went poof and was gone.

As the new 20-year-old star of Michael Flatley's 'Lord of the Dance,' Carey proved he had all the prowess (and none of the ego) needed to fill the shoes of Flatley, the Irish dance phenom who originated the role.

Carey, once an understudy to the now-retired Flatley, dazzled a sparse but spellbound crowd of 2,000 with his feet and charmed them with his boyish smile and good looks. Carey brought a likeability and light-heartedness to the role of the hero.

The 110-minute 'Lord of the Dance' is built around a loose, overly obvious story of good vs. evil. In a mythical time and place, the Lord of the Dance (Carey) and the Warlords battle the Dark Lord (an enjoyable Cian Nolan) and the Warriors, with a love story to boot.

There are pyrotechnics, throbbing music, magic dust, costumes that aren't what they seem, dueling violinists and massive stage pieces, but the jaw-dropping attraction is the Irish step dance.

With sometimes as many as 27 dancers in a chorus line on stage, the energy was incredible. Their feet thundered in the kind of perfect unison seemed reserved for machines, not human bodies.

The dancers' precision and discipline were amazing. The speed of their feet was mind-boggling. And somehow they managed to do it without so much as a visible drop of sweat or heaving chest.

'Lord of the Dance' doesn't come cheap. A top ticket is $42.50.
But for audiences hungry for the razzle-dazzle stage spectacle that's conspicuously absent from the Weidner Center's 1998-99 Broadway Theatre Season, 'Lord of the Dance' should hit the spot.

IT'S ABOUT TIME SOMEONE GOT IT RIGHT!! YES!!
