I love this game. It's an amazing war sim, set on a fictional archipelago during the Cold War. The player switches between the roles of four men: David Armstrong, a foot soldier; Robert Hammer, a tank driver; James Gastovski, a black operative who's been forced out of retirement; and Sam Nichols, a pilot. It is what you would call a 'realistic' game - the weapons are accurately modeled after real ones, the player doesn't have super strength and speed, and it's damn easy to die. This, coupled with the fact that you're only allowed one save per mission, makes this a challenging game. The absence of a health bar, radar, and other such distractions make the game more immersive. The mobile crosshair is a nice touch, it gives the player a more realistic sense of movement. The ability to switch between first- and third-person view makes the game accessible by everyone. There is a wide array of vehicles to pilot, and a mission editor to aid the modern gamer's desire to make and play mods. I especially liked playing on Veteran difficulty; it entails paying deep attention to your map, compass, comrades, and radio, as there is little else to guide you. The only flaws I can think of are the sub-standard graphics and music, and the INSANE difficulty (is that really a flaw?). So buy this game. Try to get the Game of the Year edition, it comes with the game, the gold upgrade (play as a Soviet!) (the mean-looking one pictured on the left!) (I mean right!) and the expansion pack, entitled Resistance. The sequel will hopefully be out this year (2006). I eagerly await it's arrival.

It matches the colour scheme.

The meanest looking former Spetz-Natz Russian dude ever, with a shirt that has no neckline.

Flying helicopters is fun, and don't let anyone lead you to beleive otherwise. If they try, remind them that helicopters have guided missiles, and tanks don't, so there.
