Home:Reviews:Resident Evil:The Umbrella Conspiracy.html

The book starts off with a series of newspaper articles detailing mysterious murders to help set the tone for the story which is consistent with the way the Resident Evil game sets the tone. However, without the visual and sound effects of the game, only a reader with vivid imagination can fully appreciate the tone set. After using a few pages to introduce the protagonists of this story and to set the paranoia of the world of Umbrella conspiracy, the author immediately dives headlong into the action, killing off the majority of the S.T.A.R.S. team, leaving only the protagonists alive. Not much foreplay involved to put it crudely - which again is consistent with the game. Throughout the book, the author jumps from storyline to storyline which makes reading a bit off putting at times but the Resident Evil atmosphere is wonderfully maintained throughout. As the story progress, the team found out about the betrayal of their Captain Albert Wesker which again heightens the paranoid flavour of the story. The evil of Umbrella, the struggle for survival of the S.T.A.R.S. team and most importantly, the constant doubt experienced by the protagonists pretty much forms the back bone of this book. Oh yes, let us not forget about the gunfights. If this sort of thing is your cup of tea, you will find the book enjoyable but otherwise, the book is unengaging and better suited as a movie or a game rather than a book.
