This book by Jonathan Green is about a pyromancer, Gerhart Brennend, that takes place just before the invasion of the Empire by Archaon the Everchosen. Gerhart is a man haunted by his past actions where he accidentally killed innocent civilians during a battle with the forces of Chaos when he lost his temper and therefore control of his firey powers. Years into the future, as a man haunted but wiser, he still fights the forces of Chaos but a man with his powers is never truly trusted in the Empire especially during times of strife and suffering. The story mainly features his battles with himself and with both the forces of Chaos and the witch hunters, overcoming odds and eventually defeating the forces of Chaos at Wolfenburg. However, such victory do not come cheaply, betrayed by a witch hunter blinded by his faith, he again lost control of his powers and destroying Wolfenburg. The flavor of the Warhammer world is vividly captured in this action packed book and like all Black Library publications, the simplicity of the language makes for easy reading. However, the build up of pace is a bit long and with too much emphasis placed on supporting storylines at times breaking the pace of the story. Otherwise, this book is excellent for an afternoon of leisure reading.
