LOST
KENNYWOOD, PA -- As the gates close for the final time
each and every Kennywood season a transformation takes
place. Midways no longer bustle with people.. Food and
games stands are emptied and cleaned. The rides are put
away for the winter as well. Here is an unique look in
picture at Lost Kennywood in the off season.
From
this photo you can see the Wipeout is in the early stages
of being disassembled. The seats and outside paneling are
already taken off and put into storage. This ride is taken
completely apart and checked in the off season before
being put together in preparation for the upcoming
season.
Yes
that is the Waveswinger pictured above. There is not much
left of it but in a few short days the large green cone
will almost be gone. All the beautiful artistic panels are
removed from this ride and kept in storage insuring they
stay in excellent condition. The swings themselves are
also taken down and put in storage. Come winter time the
Waveswinger is hardly a recognizable ride.
Look
no water! As you can clearly see the Pittsburg Plunge
which was once filled with thousands of gallons of water
is now empty. The small lake that makes up the centerpiece
of Lost Kennywood is completely drained every off season.
The boats are removed and placed in a close by location
waiting the day the water fills up the lake and they can
be used once again.
This
photo taken late in 2002 shows the Pittfall stung with
thousands of lights. Kennywood coverted this 251ft ride
into a 251ft Christmas Tree to celebrate the holiday
season. During the off season the Pittfall cars are placed
at the top of the ride keeping the cables inside the tower
protecting them from the harsh Pittsburgh winters.
Here
is an shot from the horseshoe curve of the Pittsburg
Plunge. It shows quiet a view of the park that usually is
packed with thousands of guests daily. On this day as well
as the rest of the off season only full time staff and
hard working mechanics and electricians are in the park
making preparations for the next exciting summer at
Kennywood.
Our
final photo takes a look at the Pittsburg Plunge after a
fresh snow. We hope you enjoyed this photo journal of
pictures giving you a unique look at Lost Kennywood during
the off season. A special thanks to Gary Janchenko for the
use of some of the photos pictured above.
