Here is the riviting tale of a six day Glacier traverse. The Eklutna traverse can be done as a cabin to cabin>
trip. The cabins are maintained by the good people at the Alaska mountaineering club. Doing the trip in>
February is a little tricky as the days are short, the weather can be very unpredictible and the avalanche>
danger coming through crow creek pass can be severe.
Meet the eclectic crew, Chad, Bruce, John, Andrea, Ted and Rebekah and Corporal Piper at the bottom there.
Day 1
As with every great expedition we started out by packing in the parking lot
This is Corporal Piper in full parade dress, ensuring departure with a certain alacrity.
Ted Practicing his big man of the mountains pose.
A well marked trail and a beautiful day.
As with every great expedition the first stop was to repack on a frozen lake.
Buddah with his hang dog, what the hell is taking everybody so long expression.
Corporal Piper demonstrating civilized travel in uncivilized country.
More clear skies and stunning landscapes.
CPL. Piper demonstrating the best way to navigate a creek crossing. Just for the record this is the best my feet looked all trip.
After a long 12 mile day we made it to the serenity falls cabin, a welcome respite from the cold night.
Day 2
At a mere 5 miles until the next cabin, day 2 got off to a lazy start.
The glacier seemed to take on a more vertical tone as the day progressed...
More vertical and icier. We had to trade the skis for crampons.
After hubris swiftly and inevitably comes nemisis. No cabin tonight, perhaps an earlier start tomorrow. Chad digging in for the night.
It may be cold in the tent but you couldn't ask for a better view.
