Sharon Smith's Ideas for Lost and Found ...............

Medium = Installation

Found Objects *,

Oil paint, (only the primary colours will be used and mixed),

Collograph plates and prints,

Oil based printing ink, (only the primary colours will be used and mixed),

*Found Objects = after a tin can has been exposed to the elements, in this case the sea and sea shore, the side of the can becomes completely eaten away leaving only its top and bottom. These have been washed clean and eaten into interesting circular forms. I collected about 25 of these from my secret cove in Hong Kong (see my studio ).

My intention for the Lost and Found exhibition is to build an installation that runs as a line out into the floor and up the wall of the gallery. The installation will explore the idea of ‘searching - what you might have lost that you find anew by searching?’ and of ‘travelling - which emotions are experience by passing from something lost to something found?’

The found objects will be presented on the floor while the collograph plates will be displayed on the wall. Colour combinations link the collograph plates one to the other; these colours can also be seen in the found objects. The movement through colour unites the installation and refers to the human condition of moving from something lost to something found.

The fragile nature of the eroded found objects is also present in the hand engraved cardboard collograph plates, which are unstable when used in the printing process. The effect of loss upon the human condition brings to pass delicate emotions. The joy of finding that which was lost or of finding something new is often a precious moment.

The installation is also linked by the concept of what is ‘left out’ by that which is ‘not explained’. The found objects are missing a part and therefore can no longer be used for their originally purpose and the image on the collograph plates hints at a form beyond the boundaries of the plate. Perhaps this refers to questions asked but as yet unanswered.

The idea of change runs throughout the installation, as the found objects and the cardboard by the work of the artist’s hand have been taken to another level.

To take the work further both technically and aesthetically a portfolio of prints will be displayed. These prints will be pulled from the collograph plates used in the installation. They will be linked to the installation through colour and form and also echo the messages of the work. The prints explore the idea of exchange and dependency, as they could not exist without the plates. The paper and the plates have engaged in the exchange of a coloured image, which has changed both the paper and the plate. As humans when we lose or find something a change occurs within us.
